1. As we're embarrassing ourselves, thought I'd share this one: Was at Chesil one day in moderate surf. I hooked a good sized 2 pound Pollack. Naturally it had swallowed the hook quite deep as I'd missed my strike. I spent as long as I dare trying to get my hook back, but ended up having to cut the hook off. I was in a rush to get it back into the water ASAP & completely misjudged the surf. As I ran towards it, it came barrelling in (probably the 6th wave as well), I tried to run backwards as I only had wellies on & promptly fell onto my knees, tried to get up (fish still in hands) & then fell on my arse in about 1 ft of water. I got up shouting "F**k F**K!!!" demon Composed myself, walked calmly back to the water & threw the fish back in. The next wave washed the fish back up onto the beach, I ran forwards to pick it up again when a seagull beat ne to it, swooped down & buggered off with it. Thank heaven for zip off trousers & quick drying socks ... [ 30. October 2004, 02:26 AM: Message edited by: FearTheHands ]
2. What are your thoughts on this ? Fishing Line Spooler on Ebay Are there any "proper" products for this as this one looks a bit home made. Could do with one to help me with re-spooling reels as I have no friends to hold the line for me Tried wrapping it around my foot, but ended up having to walk to work with my Shakespeare tied to me for 3 days
3. Read it & weap muhahahaha!
4. Might ask for one for xmas santa : http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pa=mchp&pa...DG&title=479011

6. quote: the doggy looks small because of the size of pebbles at that end of the chesil, photo the same fish at burton bradstock & it would look huge Indeed - thanks ziggy! Only one thing worse than insulting a man's fish he's landed .... The Doggy was indeed caught at Chesil Cove where the Pebbles are huge - HUGE I say!!! ( I took 6 home & built a new garage ) The Wrasse (sic) in the piccy was quite small - about 6 inches in length (if that helps ?)
7. The lad I referred to was about 18 & was by no means a novice. I was talking to him before & he'd been fishing most of his life. The second person was in his mid 40's & also had years & years of experience, so lack of knowledge is not to blame in this case ...
8. I added my two penneth: http://forum.rivercottage.net/viewtopic.php?t=6178
9. If I'd landed a 25 inch wrasse I'd we a bit more excited! The doggy was 25 " Thanks Kieran for the link. I am at present also searching to try & put a positive ID on the fish I caught. As a novice it's interesting learning new species. I was told a Pollack I'd caught was a Whiting by an "experienced" angler. Now having caught a few of both I know the difference as soon as one is hooked as they have very different characteristics ...
10. quote: considering you get a lot of tourists and non fisherman on the pier it is just confirming there views that fishing is a cruel sport when they see fish treated that way. I agree kembo. It was my absolute pleasure whilst fishing there to catch a small wrasse just as a family with 4 young children were walking past. They all stood & watched & after I unhooked it I walked over to them to show them the fish. All of the kids were asking questions like "Does it hurt the fish ?", "Do you put them back ?" "What do they eat ?" etc & it was my great pleasure to pass on the small amount of knowledge I have already picked up. Their dad thanked me afterwards for taking the time & I really felt heartened that probably one of the kids first experiences of angling was a good one. I am "Studio Six" it's my web design business. can't understand why you got a cookie! You shouldn't do as I don;t have any scripts running to inititate one. I will investigate ... It's harmless .... honest P.S. Does everyone have problems with people walking on the beach walking in fron of your tripod & tangling in your lines ? I continually had to ask people not to walk infront of my tripod even though I was only 8 ft away from the damn surf!
11. quote: be careful when putting wrasse back in...even a drop of 6 inches can stun them, sometimes never to recover. i'm leaning towards a corkwing because of the scale size...but its sharing traits from both...do wrasse x breed? All the wrasse I caught were from a pier & had a drop of a good 9ft back into the water & they all went back in with no problems ... I have posted a couple more pics of more that I caught - maybe that will help ID them ? Interested to know exactly what I've caught!
12. quote: It's the smallest lesser spotted dog I have ever seen! How small do you think it is ? This measured a tad over 25 inches long ...
13. I can go one better than a priest - kindly donated to me when they upgraded to night sticks  : Will this do instead ?? (The truncheon not the mackerel .... then again Monty Python springs to mind ....)
14. This week I caught a few new speices I've not caught before (being a relatively novice angler). I'm fairly certain that this below is a Lesser Spotted Dogfish ? Caught night fishing from Chesil Cove: Also I know that this is a Wrasse, but exactly what sort ? I was asked by a passer by if it was a Ballan Wrasse, but I didn't know ?: Both fish were returned safely
15. quote: the fact the fish were used as bait means i can't really understand why you're so upset about it..... Had the fish been caught for the purpose of using it as bait then I wouldn't be unhappy, it wasn't. It was caught for "sport". The fact that the fish was killed PURELY so these morons could get back a 10p hook is disgusting. Why not stamp on each fishes head you catch then throw it back purely to make sure you don't catch the same one twice ?? Ziggy - fantastic suggestion about offering them a hook. I will most definitely be using that one in the future.
16. Just got back from a fantastic week's fishing in an around Weymouth & Portland. Whilst fishing off of Weymouth pier on 3 separate occasions I witnessed anglers killing garfish they had landed purely so they could retrieve their hooks. One youngish lad just broke the fishes neck & slowly pulled it's head off while the fish was flapping around furiously. One other bloke did hit it on the head before cutting it open to get his hook back. When I asked him if he couldn't have cut the hook off he replied "It's easier to get it back like this". Both these fish were given to other people to use as bait but I really was p***ed off at seeing this completely senseless killing.  I caught plenty of fish - kept what I needed for the pot but put every other one back. I lost a few hooks mainly from Pollack (and my slow striking!) but each time I cut the hook & returned the fish relatively unharmed. Is this common ? [ 22. 17. Couldn't agree more - I am quite a fan of HFW & watch all of the River Cottage programs (I even have a couple of books) but I was quite disturbed about the amount of Bass that were pulled out at Portland & that they were just left to suffocate. Knocking fish on the head to kill them is perhaps not palatable for TV audiences - OK don't show it, but explain that that's the most humane way to kill fish rather than let the viewers assume it's OK to let them suffocate. To correct Andrew Boyd: quote: Killing everything should not be the aim.In HFW's defence this is NOT his philosophy. He will only take what he can use for the pot & does preach conservation of wild food/animal stocks. Looks like he's shot himself in the foot with this one - shame - must do better ...
18. Thanks for the link Anyone else point me in the direction of additional useful information ?
19. I will be spending a week in Weymouth from 15th October onwards. I was hoping all you Dorset locals could point me in the right direction for some good fishing marks while I'm there? My normal haunts are: Chesil (Ferry Bridge) Weymouth Pier West Bay (Bridport) Last time I was there I had a quick look at West Bexington & I hear Abbotsbury is quite a good mark ? What sort of fish should I be targeting / expect to catch this time of year? Would really appreciate some advice from you locals & if anyone is about during the week keep an eye out for a novice sea angler & say "Hi" [ 12. 20. Norton consistently missed viruses on my machines that AVG picked up straight away. AVG is more independent than Norton as well as Norton tends to rely on system resources more which usually means it misses quite a few virus variants. If AVG tells you where the virus is then you should be able to delete the file yourself ? Don't know why it doesn't give you the option of putting it in the vault, have never had that problem (yet) myself. Check your settings ? I assume you are also using a firewall (Not the crappy one that comes bundled with XP) ? I strongly recommend Kerio Personal Firewall. I make my living sat behind a PC & run a suite of machines so security is vital for me.
21. First you need to upload the images to some webspace (maybe you have some freespace you can use ?) Then you just use the IMAGE button below the reply box which brings up a box where you cut & paste the URL of the picture you want to display: code: This will then display the picture thus:
22. You should still be able to scan your drive in Safe Mode via Windows Explorer Right Click on the drive you want to scan which should bring up the shell menu, then choose "Scan with AVG"
23. To get the IP address of the machine you are on (assuming you are running XP): Windows Key + R (this brings up the Run box dialogue) Type "cmd" (this opens the command prompt window) Type "ipconfig" & hit return. You will see the IP address displayed Hope this helps
24. I have tried feathering for mackerel (or whatever I could catch) a few times with utterly no success at all. First time was at West Bay (Bridport) when the surf was a good 6ft high. I soon thought better of this as I thought the conditions were too rough - is this correct ? Next time was on a much calmer day at Ferry bridge, Chesil Beach. I bought about half a dozen different types of feathers & tried about 4 of them. I started using a 3 oz lead & using the sink & retrieve method. After no success I moved to a 4oz lead (for a bit more distance) but alas, no success at all. After this I changed to ledgering with small sandeel & on my second cast hooked a reasonable sized Pollack, so the fish were definitely there. Some advice please: What is the best conditions to feather in ? Should I be sinking the feathers to the bottom or nearer the surface ? Thanks in advance
25. Thanks to all for your positive replies, it's encouraging for a numpty like me to see that advice is readily available from the more experienced anglers out there. I would most definitely appreciate a beginners section to the forum& could most certainly post quite a few questions on the message board! I was expecting a roasting in your replies TBH & am pleasantly surprised I didn't get one! Thanks for all your offers of advice & pointing me towards advice, websites etc. It's all very greatfully received
