    cockles

You don't need a license to harvest cockles for personal use. Cockles are safe pretty much all year round. I'm interested to know where you would go to get them ziggy ? Nearest place I can think of to me (West Bay, West Dorset) is Studland Bay ? Not tried there yet, but I've heard you can get razor clams there as well ....? What about Charmouth & Lyme ?
  2. sanctuary - I've also just received my trap the same as yours. Not had a chance to use it yet though. I'm assuming the bait zip should be at the top ? Or does it matter. I'll only be able to use it at the bottom of the pier while I'm fishing there as I don't have access to a boat. Toerag - What are 'sash' weights ? Can you pick them up from angling centres ? As I was wondering ho to wait it down. I was gonna stick half a mackerel in the net. Would that do the job ?
  3. quote: Ken Davison South Wales: The question relating to fishing is open to debate, but in my opinion smoking is not. That's PRECISELY how the animal welfare protestors see their opinion. Surely you MUST be able to see the hypocrisy in that statement ???!??? Fox hunting & fishing have NOTHING whatsoever in common. I go fishing predominantly to try & catch something that I can eat. If I catch more than I can eat/too small etc, they go back in the quickest & most pain free way I can give them. If I am going to take them home for the table I despatch them as quick & as pain free as possible. I take no pleasure in killing fish, I don't have bloodlust. Fox hunting has nothing to do with pest control. It's prehistoric & has no place in today's society. If foxes are a pest (& I don't pretend to be a farmer) then shoot them. A much more efficient way of controlling that "pest". To say that banning fox hunting will put 1000's of people out of work is utter bullshit. Switch to drag hunting, if you truly believe that hunting the fox down is NOT the only focus of your days "entertainment". I state the above having spent (up until 10 months ago) 15 years as a vegetarian. 5 of those years included being a vegan. So don't even attempt to pigeonhole me as an "anti". I educated myself about what food I put into my body & how that food is produced. I'm very glad I did as it taught me a colossal amount about food, but I wouldn't go back. I take the time & effort to find out where my food comes from. If it's vegetables I like to grow as much of my own as possible. If it's fish I try & catch it for the table. If it's meat I like to know where it came from & insist on only eating free range meat. We are all hypocrites. I lovingly pat my dogs head while eating a nice juicy rare steak. I also keep tropical fish & am upset if I lose a fish I've had for years, but I'll still go out the next day & kill a fish to eat. There are plenty of animals/beings that I feel contempt for, that doesn't mean to say I promote cruelty to any of them. I hate cats & am allergic to them, but you will never find me being cruel to one. Tolerance is the key, whether it be towards peoples opinions or towards animals you consider being a pest. Recommending that you cast a weight & lead around someone's head is exactly the ammunition the "anti's" as you insist on calling them is after. It shows a clear contempt for ALL living beings, let alone fish. I shall stand shoulder to shoulder to defend my right to fish. More importantly though, I shall also stand up to be counted to demand my right to free speech, just as the "anti's" are doing....
  4. Over the last 10 days of fishing I've had nothing but bad luck (?) & problems. In particular I've been losing lots of gear. Main problems were at West Bexington & Chesil Cove (Portland). If I left the line out longer than 2 minutes it would get sucked under the shingle/stones by the under current. 60% of the time I wouldn't be able to retrieve my gear & the line snapped. I've been using a shockleader for the first time so I am wondering if my knot tying abilities are to blame ? Advice on best leader knots ? Also pretty much EVERY time I did manage to retrieve my gear the bait (sandeel) was missing, again I'm assuming this is due to the under current ? Are sandeels a waste of time this time of year/conditions ? I switched to squid, which did seem more hardy ... I've always been using a running ledger trace for beach casting - advice again please ? Also what about lead weight. In one corner I hear you need a 6oz lead in order to stay on the bottom in the other corner I'm told you don't need anything heavier than a 4oz ? Does the weight of the lead have any bearing on the line getting sucked under the shingle ? I'm using a 14ft Grauvell rod with a FS reel, 15 pound mainline, 60 pound shockleader. Help please!!!  I've decided to join the local SAC as I clearly need help! [ 22. March 2005, 12:01 PM: Message edited by: FearTheHands ]

  6. Image sizes are relevant dependant on the clients resolution setting. As a rule us web developers now build for 1024 x 768. Your images can be what pixel size you feel fits in best with the design of your website. Make sure you use a compression utility for your images where you can preview the compressed image against the original before you save it. Paint Shop Pro is a good all round image editing suite. It's also a common misnomer that gif images are smaller in file size than jpg's. This is not always the case. Gif's are a maximum of 256 colours, whereas a jpg is a maximum of 16 million colours. It all depends on how the image was created & compressed & saved. A gif image can have 256 colours whereas a jpg can have 2, dependant on how much information is on the image. Your website looks good - keep up the great work
  7. Cheers for your replies. The mouth of the eel looked wider & more flat than a conger, so it sounds like it could be a silver eel? I was fishing about 1000 yards away from the harbour. Are silver eels & freshwater eels one & the same ? [ 11. March 2005, 05:58 PM: Message edited by: FearTheHands ]
  8. I fished West Bay, Dorset yesterday evening & think I caught my first conger. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me so I'm only going on looks. It was a tiddler, about 9 inches long. Are there conger about this time of year & at that location ? Or am I mistaking it for something else ? I've done a picture search on google & it looks like a conger. I'm sure someone can put me straight.

  14. quote: If you can get hold of a little dinghy and outboard it'll improve your options no end, easy launching at West bay and Lyme, off the beach at Charmouth. Dan, very interested in knowing how/where you launch on the beach from Charmouth. Was there today to check things out, couldn't see any obvious places ... I'm sure you can set me straight [ 03. If anyone is planning a trip to Burton. West Bay, West Bexington, Abbotsbury etc in the near future, please give me a shout! Also, any pointers on where I can start my hunting career ? [ 25. 16. Microsoft Outlook can pop up a message when an email arrives if you switch this fucntion on in options
  17. I use AVG on all of my PC's & let it scan once a day. Once a week is rather risky as an enormous amount of damage can be done in that time frame. Depends how often you use your PC though, 2 of mine are on 24 hours a day ...
  18. To access a separate email account, first you need to setup a new account with your ISP. Then you need the following 4 things: POP3 Server Name SMTP Server Name Account Name Password These details should've been given to you when you setup your new account. Most likely the POP3 & SMTP will be the same as previous. Dig out these details, or get in touch with Wannadoo
