  1. Now i am more confused,as it happens i did catch several, but only by striking when seeing the line move,my friend the expert said i should have had more but who knows,by striking too early i may have spooked them all.Richard

    hi,

    what size shipmans was it?

dry takes can be very frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

opinions differ on when, how hard to "lift" dont strike as such

slow figure 8 will keep you in contact

for a while i used to slowly move rod tip to either right or left (wind depending) on slow figure eight

if a bow develops to right i move rod to left to "lift" "strike" set hook

and if bow to left move rod tip right.........

trial and error the smaller the fly the quicker it can spit it out

  2. Hiya, My son in law has recently seen the light, and is a pretty competent shore angler now,( on the Moray coastline) so much so, he's decided to try fly fishing....and I am hoping to get him some gear, I have some stuff for him, but was hoping that someone on here might be selling a rod....mibbes even a reel too...so if you are, could you please PM me, and i'll get back to you..

Money !!!!...not toooo expensive please...he's just looking to try it out, and I'm paying for it  ... then he'll decide if its for him...thats the main reason for him NOT getting a go at my Norwich rod..:):)

    Thanks guys..:)

    you have pm m8

  5. mistack4 (Caitlin 13), littletack4 (Kyle 11) and tack4 (myself) all went to jack's fishery 25 miles away sat pm from 3-7pm

fish rising every where but not one of the 8 or so anglers could get them to take anything off the top...

they were on the curse the canis

jim an angler who has a caravan near the fishery was the first to land a decent fish on a green n yellow lure and had plenty follows and further success so the inevitable happend

a time for tactic changes but thought i had nothing similar in my boxes tried a dog knobbler with no joy and found littletack4 getting in a fankle with his casting .

so plan b get the grub on we had brought a gas burner for steak burggers that misstack4 (whilst supervised) cooked for us

a cup of tea for her and me and a cupasoup for littletack 4 replenished our energy and we set off again.

now which box did i put chub1's swapped flies in ...................................

ahh got em an nice wee yelow n white casts whisker cast and swiflty stripped resulted in my first rainbow a tiddler but a fish returned

re cast and handed rod to misstack4...........

misstack4 had success soon after with her first ever fly caught fish an nice pan sized 1 3/4 lb rainbow

a dispondant littletack4 who'd missed a few takes turned his luck around with a nice rainbow of 1 lb 6 oz and at last a smile returned to his face and even better when he revived the fish and let it swim for another day

then i took over from misstack4 again and had two for the pan in quick succession heaviest being 2 lb 3 0z

no more takes for misstack4 and we were given a shout again from her for round two of grub hmmmmmmmmm

one more fish fell to littletack4 christening his new landing net good n proper , again expertly released and he helped land my last rainbow too final one for the pan

it was now 7pm and pack up time gear all to the car fish cleaned and filleted at a near by burn (stream) and off for home for a dvd and pick n mix treat

so a first fish on the fly for caitlin a christend net for kyle and a happy dad with fish for the fridge and a new method of lure fishing tried, tested and accomplished

    cheers chub1 m8

  6. short sesssion last night fro me n kyle(littletack4)

arrived at Jack Casey's fishery 1/2 hr drive form our house at just after 5 conditions loked favourable :clap2:

the deal is you contact him by phone prior to fishing which Kyle had done en route, so Jack arrived shortly after we did to have a blether collect monies ( £18 for a father n son combined 3 fish ticket)

he helped set Kyle up and by 5:15 we were fishing nice we ripple on the water and a few fish rising and some of the usual kamikaze rainbow leaps occuring

after Jack had a few casts with kyle he told him he wanted a good effort from him and if he came back not to grab my fish n say he caught them.

would he christen his new rod?..................

first take came to me on a heavy buzzer on the point below a griffith's gnat........

palyed it for a couple of mins to see it spit the hook as net was put in place as i was playing the fish kyle missed a take as he was watching me he was less than pleased and said it was my fault :wallbash:

next cast saw me lose both hooks to the fence behind :wallbash:

a wee titter from my right then saw kyle hook into a fish only to be snapped off.....

first landed fish fell to me a blue of approx 1 1/2 lb and was released whilst still in the water (hoping for bigger fish) :fish:

kyle was next in and again another blue a first for him of a shade under 2 lb------- 1lb 11oz to be precise :fish::clap:

i soon followed with another take only to lose it at the net

this happened again for kyle what was going wrong?????

Jack offered a wee tip to us both re playing fish and we duly took it on board ie rod position and strip harder to set hook

after which he called it a night and set off back to his cozy arm chair wishing us good sport n fun

it was approx 6:30 by now and the fishing had slowed so we went th the wee hut for some cup a soup wehad brought n rolls with turkey hmmmmmmmmm............ lovely

with renewed vigour we set about the task again to see kyle hook n lose 4 more fish unlucky wee pal and then disastor his leader loop parted from the fly line and with no spare that was that for his rod

me thinks a lesson to be learned here

during that time i was busy myself hoooking into more fish and landing two further rainbows and my first brownie :yahoo:

brownie weighed in at 2lb 4oz and will be added to my total caught on 7wt line 4lb tippet size 18 Black bodied CDC buzzer

3 fish for the table filleted en site and then it was time for home

happy dad and slightly deflated son but happy with his fish talked about tactics etc on way home until it went quiet when he (flaked out ). woke when we arived home and helped with gear to shed then in for a nice bath

    top evening :punk:

a total of 7 takes for kyle 1 fish landed a new species for him his first blue

and 6 takes for me 4 landed 1 blue , 2 rainbow and a pb and first brownie of 2lb 4oz for me

  7. well conditions proved very tough

    like i needed that

AMC and myself were out on a boat seeing hime have three takes two boated i had one take but lost it

nnw wind gusty fc 3-4 with intermitent squally showers

harry graham arrived after work and i fished on with him while alan was out with his da

not a touch no rise at all

    :o

sat weather slightly better ie there was a bit of sun but still that gusty wind

not a touch until the shortest of evening rises saw harry land a couple which got me off my arse and stop a phone call to land two rainbow to 3lb on size 18 hares ear cdc and a size18 cdc buzzer :clap2::fish:

nowt on sunday but got a text from harry (whilst awaiting ferry in larne) to say he was in to his 5th fish since i had left

adrian young the fishery manager had a 8' 5-6wt rod for me for my son along with a reel spot on that man ( he was out casting withy me over grass last night and SHOOTING LINE all ready to almost 40'

fly tying now as i bought a 2nd vice so we can tie together

    tight lines

  8. was back at fluff chucking last night with my kids in tow at a wee fishery 30 mins from my door

misstack4 (caitlin 13) not too interested but kept us going in cooked rolls hmmmmmmmmm! loverly jubbely!

very bright conditions wit patchy cloud cover to say the least

was casting for littletack4 (kyle 11) and sharing retrieves to try and keep interest

not too much doing till some other anglers arrived as the rise came on strong

my first fish came to a weesize 16 white/cream klink

    nowt on buzzer

frustration ensued as rise went off the boil

misstack4 decides i have had enough and want to go home

so stared to assemble cooking gear and sundries for transport to car.......

Jack the ownwer came over and suggested a move for me and kyle to deeper water where he felt fish would be

so as i was picking up some gear he had cast out for kyle bingo .....

    fish on

which he successfully played and landed

his result will follow in picture

needles to say one happy littletack4 and one proud dad

continued with a new vigour and saw me land my 2nd fish on a CDC emerger followed by kyle having three takes only to have two dropped and another successful play and land another fine wee rainbow

as reward Jack the owner let him keep his first fish which i cleaned , finned and be headed ready for tonights tea hmmmmm!

  9. arranged a short 4 hr session with a mate who due to work had been yet to wet aline this season

weather had been overcast but warm all day fingers were crossed for a good evening rise at a wee fishery 30 mins from my doorstep in sw scotland

as we arrived the heavens opend (thankfully it only lsated fro 15 -20 mins before becoming the odd drop now and again)

as we tackled up in the shelter we were both using 7wt lines on 7-8wt outfits

drys were both our choices and we set about our task.......

jack the fishery owner had said for us to strat fishing and he would meet up with us (after phone call en route)

he came over and offered me advice and had a quick rummage throgh my fly box and advised buzzers for this time of the evening which i dully follwed his advice and was rewarded with my first scottish water rainbow

    KIF_0838-1.jpg

follwed shortly after by a RUDD!!!!!

    KIF_0839.jpg

my third fish soon appeared and i was really enjoying myself

    KIF_0841.jpg

gordon then called on jack for his devine wisdom

    KIF_0840.jpg

    guess what ?.......

4th fish to me another rainbow all had been in the 1 1/2 - 2lb range so far and good fun on 5lb leader

i took a wee break and gordon sneaked round to my spot

    KIF_0842.jpg

alas to no avail this wasnt goig to be his night

after a breif lull during which jack had wished us tightlines and farewell

the action kicked off again for me with more fish all rainbows for 5th 6 th 7 th and 8th fish

so tally was 8 fish 7 rainbow 1 RUDD!!

checked my watch and had 15 mins till i had to depart for home

recast in my we spot and the take this time was much stronger and line had to be given and quickly,

the fight ensude gain a bit, give it back, this went on fro 5 mins or more till eventually i satrted to gain more than i gave back a big leap annouced it was a rainbow butmuch bigger than anything landed so far

    the eventual result was

    KIF_0844.jpg

my new pb fly caught fish of 4lb 1 oz

    KIF_0846.jpg

9 fish in the session and best till last :D

    delighted don't cover it

  10. nice one unca' snatcher

the tack4 squad had a short session nearer home with littletack4 catching the only wrasse we all had bites but only one hook up so it was then off to hacve a go at some mackeral spinnig with only tack4 being successful with 3 big mackeral, 3 coallies approx 1- 1 1/2 lb and two decent pollack biggest just over 4lb hell of a scrap

another m8 arrived, as we were packin up, fresh from an all nighter with 5 bass to 5 1/2 lb to his name and a 15lb bull huss

  11. cheers guys

there were several shots i could have used from that weekend but that one captured the essence of the topic i thought.

I was learning to fly fish in northern ireland and the shot was one of several taken at that time of the day as the angle in the shot(harry) and i had fished the whole night through (arrived at 10:00 friday am wnet to bed finally at 09:45 sat morning for 2 hours) and i was just about to return his tuition on the fly with some tuition on composition ( new to digi photography with a lumix DMC-FZ20) and was a dawn in a million

  13. part 2

after food was washed down with a medicinal

    the adventure continued

the evening rise came on but the trout were extremely pre occupied by "the curse" canis and would not rise to a lure from many a rod including stevie (my new sensai)

so practice casting and presntation of the fly continued

as the evening began to turn to night several appoligies and well wishings were exchanged

Phil hit the tent for a sleep he'd been up since 3 am for his flight from liverpool.

Me......... go to bed........that would be right so talked a plan of action with harry who was up for a full night on the water in a boat (now equiped with alan's electric motor) and wayne was up for a wee wager each angler would be on a take first fish heaviest weight won the kitty of a princely sum of £3 ( £1 entry) so with big stakes to play for we started to talk flies and tactics

a wee test of harry's plan resulted in......

    23:10

    IMG_5540.jpg

harry playing a nice fish which unfortunately wnet under the boats and broke him! this wasnt to be the last break off.......

one of the guys had left a all weather two piece suit for me to use and with out it i would have got hyperthermia when the mist came down

as the fog/mist came down we started to lose sight of wayne so harry decided we would fish hard and quiet for the pot!

i was to learn a valuable lesson or two that night

firstly when casting at night its all about concentrating on the lift n stops as you cant see a thing

this i feel is one of the best things i did that weekend and started to cast better and better with less line tangles, wind knotts, and with less wrist break

every 1 1/2 - 2 hrs we came off the water for coffee n a mars bar to keep sugar caffine 'n' warmth levels optimal

just shy of 2:00 harry had a fish on to be broken the air was a tad blueish for a few minutes

at 2.30 during a break we were all tying flies and i was getting tuition on dropper set ups including buzzer dry combos, single dropper and point, two dropper setups, and why to do it ie to find the sub layer the fish were in.

just before 3 am wayne tuned in, me..... you guessed it back on the water.

by 5 am i was getting a sore shoulder and with fatigue my wrist break was back so what could we do

ahh yes harry has recently got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 so as dawn was imminent i gave him a quick tute on compsition and we had 3/4 hr off the water practising photography

    IMG_5553.jpg

with some really nice shots as a result

one of my favs of quite a few

    dawn.jpg

lesson over and a couple of happy david baileys with fresh coffee n mars bars in our stomachs we headed ot on to the lake once more feeling the tiredness creeping up on me but that was about to disappear , read on.....

during this session fish were rising all over the place with more of a splash indicating it was dry fly n buzzers on the dropper

at approx 6.30 am i had a funny sensation on my rod and being a comlete novice at actually recognising a bite slowly lifted to harry's yelp "quick m8 rod up high and strip line back"

my first hook up n fight

christ what an experience for several minutes it was strip, tension, give line , strip n tension again all from the deep

as we started to see colour my leader was nearing the rod tip

    quality fish says harry ......

lesson 2 off the night stay relaxed and dont tense grip on line finger

    PING

leader parted at the loop bye bye fish the air was blue i'm sorry to say

harry then explained his preffered way of putting leadre on by loop to loop lesson well and truly learned

right checklist by end of night session

    1 casting very much improved

    2 had hooked a fish

    3 had played a fish

    4 dropper set ups

    5 leader loop to loop

huge thanks to harry for above checklist help

as the guys surfaced from the tents it was brekie time hmm bacon rolls with steak from last nights barbie, n a rib or two washed down by copious amounts of tea, coffee n juice

by the time adrian had arrived harry and i had our stories straight and the size of the fish we lost were getting gradually bigger n bigger nah only joking

then it happend at 09:45 i went to bed for a whole two hours my first sleep in approx 28 hrs and short lived as the sun was well up in the sky and the forecast was for 25 deg c +

wind nil cloud nil ...... the next session was going to just as hard if not harder

my arm was ok wrist was a bit sore so gave the rod a rest time for more tuition....

    entemology

    adrian spooning a fish

    spooning.jpg

    the result

    spoon.jpg

exactly like the buzzer adrian had tied me the evening before right down to the breathers, thorax, body, and "red errse"

alan came back just around 1 pm as did the guy who had loaned my my thermal protection with my fave expression of all time now " what about ye big man?"

    gotta love these guys

and alan produced a big pot of irish stew from the back of his car

man that has to be the best irish stew i have ever tasted and like all good ones you know "its gonna stick like glue" beautiful doesn't do it justice

after showing some of the guys some of the shots i'd taken adrian asked if i would take a few shots for him of the fishery so a walk ensued around the complex will post up pics in photgraphy section soon some of thes will prob be used in his new publicity and i said as long as he gave me a mention in credits he was welcome to use as many as he wanted

after walk and letting him browse some of the results which i'm really pleased with i need to cool off so waders on and ......

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    float.jpg

during a 20 min paddle i realised wayne had set the tube up as the way he likes it and could have done with a good bit more air in for me as a change of postion resulted in the sectional bar over my lap pulling apart and hence

    cooleddown.jpg

at least in the conditions they would dry quick

    as would my clothes

    empty.jpg

off for a wash n change

food time was upon us again not too many fish were coming to the bank but a husband and wife couple had 22 fish for there troubles from the boat

evening rise saturday produced a nice fight for wayne resulting in......

    wayne.jpg

    on a dry fly

things were looking uo they weren't wholly on the canis

after a few chucks adrian came over to check flies

    "wheres you box big man?"

opened to reveal the right fly for the situation had been in my box all along

    dryfly1.jpg

    wait for it ..........

    fish on

"don't go to hard on it too fast" adrian advised "give line when it wants and only strip back with light pressure on rod /line finger"

what a fight only a fine 1 1/2lb rainbow, the cherry had been popped

rod greys 9'6" grx 7/8 wt cortland 333 wt/f 8 wt line 5lb leader and white klink a moment i will never forget

this pic sums up my feelings of satisfaction, accomplishment, relief, wasnt allowed to have pic taken till i had wetted my throat (tin behind my shoulder whilst phil kept the fish in the net and in the water)

with strongbow and had the ahhhhhhhhhhh moment

    jobdone.jpg

the compleat angle by issac walton aint got nowt on this report

the adrenaline that had been keeping me going was fast depleting and after the required " saftey dance" it was time for a couple more

by 11:00 it was bed time

phil saying "i'm not being gay but can i bunk up in the bigger tent with you"

so we started to bring his mattress in when it caught on waynes (who had gone home once the last angler had come off the water and locked up) carp bed that i was granted sleeping rights on

    HISS

SLEEP WE DID and no gay activity from phil phew!

again a restless night and cramp from float tubing had me up at 06:30 for a pee!

whilst waiting for the guys to open up Phil and i cleaned out the boats with me becoming half a dozen flies to the better along with some genk floatant

who ever left it finders keeprs m8

the first angler appeared just before 07:00 a regular that adrian allows to turn up and fish before he officially opens his m8 arrived and they set up to beat there competition to the first fish before they arrived

a normal sunday occurance, they fish for a few hours till around 10-11 am

heaviest bag gets lunch paid for when for when they meet up at the pub a great way to spend a sunday i think!

when adrian arrived the barbie was back on for sausages reheat a steak n burgers tea by the jug washed it down

a great tip from adrian saw me tying a griffiths gnat and wayne had me back on the water for an hour prior to my lift to get the ferry home

fond farewells were given and recived and alan took me back to the ferry terminal at larne

delayed ferry due to technical difficulties meant i got home around 4pm to a a bath waiting drawn by my good lady bathed after a long hug in almost silence so i could freshen up before the kids saw me

home sweet home when the squeals sounded when they were asked to come down for tea once my bath had finished

what a weekend and what a way to fish

    totally hooked pardon the pun

    and as arnie says

    i'll be back.

  14. in an atempt to improve technique and hopefully break my fly cherry am away from early hours friday8th for three days fishing at straid fishery NI

    www.straidfishery.co.uk

wish me well full report on return i promise :D

possibly the odd one or two beers will be scoffed but hey ho some ones got to do it

big report this, so grab a drink now 'cause i am will post up photos when at home as unable to access my hard drive at the mo

    part 1

friday am restless night eventually gave up trying to sleep after 2 attempts so with 4 hrs sllep i was up at 04:15 to have a shower cuppa brekkie, followed by a quiet tidy up, last minute double checks kitchen sink taken out and left where it belonged enough is enough and off to check in for ferry

Sea was mirror calm, yah wee dancer, a really smooth crossing and hopefully a few

met by alan, one of the likely lads who fish straid, with the famous northen irish greeting "what about ye?" and driven thro' some idilic NI country side approx 15 mins from terminal to fishery arriving just on 10:00

introduced to adrian (fishery manager), wayne ( ex london wide boy and pro fly tier), Phil the 'scouse (the only other traveller to the meet) Jackie (who's the local worthy and whose voice would shame Frank Carson), Stevie Munn (pro guide,Hardy instructor and font of knowledge)

COFFEE AND BIG MUGS OF IT

first order of business was a walk up the near bank on the hut side and to set up the tents for the weekend.

rod set up and a fly given to me to have a go started to Fish!!!

Phil was quick into action too at the deeper end of the 22 acre lake

    phil.jpg

as we were all on a catch 'n release ticket for the weekend my first lesson in returning a hard fighting rainbow was soon commenced

    firstfish.jpg

Stevie Munn came along and watched for a few mins and then the day really started for me with the coaching started

he had his work cut out and after an hour he had had enogh and went for a well deserved smoke break to calm his nerves, with the instruction to keep at it and rest every 5 mins 'til he came back

after around an hour or so had to pack in and get the shorts n wading sandles on as it was hitting 23 degree C with little or no wind and blue cloudless sky and 2nd thick application of factor 20 sun lotion

more juice and a shout from stevie " come away big man were out on a boat"

    stevie.jpg

four hours of boat fishing followed and a stevie rightly pointed out it was realy still casting practice which was slowly working and imporved greatly when he examined my set up after 30 mins afloat

"this an 8wt line, a ron thompson i rarely sell these any more" he pipes up "and i'll tell you why....... they're shhheeee...ite!! in his broad NI lilt

(whats the middle east got to do with it i thought to myself )

spool changed to a 333 8wt and low and behold a cast that shot line approx 2 out of 5 times

tips and critique continued and the ratio of good to bad casts improved and i knew what i was doing wrong when it happend.

at long last when we came off the water it was barbecue time

  16. nice quiet weekend for the tack4's ..........not

saturday saw tracy (mum) off to a scrapbooking crop, which left me with misstack4 and littletack4 so i thought hmm.....

wrassing  at west tarbert, mull of galloway

an impromptu sesion ended with misstack4 cuffing us both two wrasse to nil including a pb wrasse of 2 lb 1 oz for caitlin (misstack4)

    33460009.jpg

    the pace was relentless.....

    33460011.jpg

kyle (littletack4) lost several fish at the waters edge as they all " kept spiiting the hook" and wasn't impressed but his glory would come later in the weekend

a short stop on the way home to see the basking seals

    33460017.jpg

then home takeaway for tea with tracy back home n happy with her day too.

as kids chilled i organised gear for sundays adventure...... prizegiving for 2006 season at SSA (Scottish Surfcasting Assoc.) event

Misstack4 took 2nd overal junior to littletack4's 3rd (he'd come to less events through the winter)

Missstack4 finished 3rd behind me in Group D casting section which i missed out on 1st spot by a point to Andy Collins Junior champ nice one m8.

Kyles weekend was made on his 3 measured casts which saw PB of 81yds each time

using my 11'9" BZE he chucked a 75g lead firstly 93 + yds, then broke the 100yd barrier with a 101yd-0 ft-7 inch cast he was jumping all over the place tumbling somersalts and whooping with joy

( i was well chuffed to say the least)

to prove it was no fluke he then upped his PB to 103 yds 0 ft 7 inches the next cast

nice one mate great improvement in 2 years for a now 10 year old

Missstack4 also upped her PB by a few yards to 63 + yds

tack4 failed to improve PB of 1 inch short of 165 yds with a longest cast of 158 + yds with 150g with "come on dad hit it" ringing in my ears

  17. diy noughts & crosses
