  1. Bestest advice I can give is to not jump straight into carping with a 2 rod bite alarm set up, but to use other methods to catch them first. However....how do you want to fish for them? float fishing? feeder? match style or rods and buzzers? There is a lot of great tackle available, but we need to know how you want to fish and what budget you have. Phil
  2. I did, lots of crud was removed, especially around the gearing, most of which looked to be the original grease that had dried up. I don't think this reel has been serviced/stripped/lubricated once since new. The fact that the original Abu tube of lube was in the box tells me a lot lol. I dont think its that old, I'm going to try and find out.
  3. Google "Bradley's Sheffield" and there are some decent results. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-651579.html Although a few years old, this seems worth reading. Phil
  4. Update! Its running smoothly after being dry assembled. New brake blocks fitted too. I'm now thinking about some custom parts and polished internals...... Any good place for tuning bits?
  5. Just found the diagram Phone thanks. Think I was just thinking to hard about something that's quite simple. Thanks JV I'll pop a message to him, Although I rekon I can do it justice myself, its always nice to have someone more knowledgeable to have a look at it. Tar muchly! kettle on!
  6. Ignore me.........I'm thick. Brake blocks need to be moved inwards before seating the side plate. Having said that, does anyone know of a good place to send it for an overhaul?
  7. Hi all....I'm stuck.... Took an Abu c3 apart to give it a clean (its going to be strapped to a light bass rod). When I slip the spool back into the cage, I cant then fit the side plate (handle side) due to the brake blocks. ( I think) What am I doing wrong? I might try and take some pics
  8. They are probably just as good as the originals. To be honest though, I bought a Leeda Icon bass for 40 quid that's probably as good. Certainly throws a 4oz lead a good distance.
  9. Hi all, Merry Christmas! When feeder or ledgering on rivers, how long do you tend to have your hooklengths? From hook to lead? Thanks
  10. Must remember that Fox have been around for quite some time now. In fact im sure they had and advert in the very first Carp World magazine, which is about 25yrs old. Some of their equipment is very good and quite desirable.....especially the older gear. Reading this got me thinking about how much I own. 3 Fox 1lb specialists, 2 of which have not been opened lol Mk1 Quattro Pod + a prototype of the Quattro Various swingers, buzz bars and sticks Euro pod Bits of luggage St and Sx bite alarms in the loft Probably more hidden about the place.
  11. Good on you for asking the questions and in such a comprehensive manner. Work on your knots, as has been suggested, there can be quite a few weak spots otherwise. Also, what rod are you using? Too powerful and you may have problems at the netting stage. Don't be afraid to play a fish, as long as its given time to recover when released it should be fine. They don't need to be hauled in lol. Edit..... Have you setup like this? controller float --- bead --- swivel --- leader + hook
  12. They are currently in their best form. All of those sugars are breaking down and fermenting nicely. Im suprised the lid hasnt gone pop yet though to be honest. Try doing it with active CSL and see what happens lol.
  13. Never keep lures in the pad of emergency toilet tissue you keep in your bag. Never pull for a break using the rod, hand line. Never have a naked flame anywhere near your tent or bivi. Focus your attention on the basic skills of whatever you are trying to learn. Ask questions if you are unsure, but don't be afraid to try. That old fella with a old gear, smokin roll ups, knows more about catching fish than any magazine, DVD, "celebrity angler" ever will. Be polite and listen. Dont spend too much time on forums.
  14. Vitalin, crushed and packed with corn and small halibut pellets, I'd be thinking about balling in 10 or so big balls of groundbait to cover the bottom shelf while I set up, then fishing over the top either lift style with a driftbeater or a short hooklength 3" bolt rig. Or a big lobworm!
  15. Good read that. Ive only fished a few of the waters listed, but I'm suprised the Grand Union canal, Gt. Ouse and Thames are not on there. Nice to see that Drayton isnt listed though...
  16. Non extradition countries per chance?
  17. Yup the machine is on here too lol, got plenty to catch up on!
  18. Personally I've always liked J.W. Loved his book "My Way". He was a major influence during my early fishing years and I still enjoy watching the older Go Fishing series, much to my wife's annoyance lol
  19. Thanks for replying, its interesting but I have never caught a perch on a chunk/fillet/section of dead fish, only ever on a small whole bait.
  20. Cant blame him I guess. Doesn't his brother live in Thailand?
  21. I think penn may have had some issues since becoming part of the pure fishing umbrella. Im sure some of their reels aren't what they used to be.
  22. I like the old 10ft John Wilson multi quiver. Ive seen a few pop up if you keep an eye out.
  23. I've got this running on the interactive board in my classroom lol
  24. Im not one for using lives. But I dont have a problem bopping one on the head before I use it. Do people really prefer lives to deads? Just wondering.
