  1. Ireland v Germany I was in a pub in Louisburgh, Co Mayo at the time! Pub was full of Irish supporters plus 2 Germans. Germans were up and screaming when they scored and dam near crying when the pub erupted on the Irish equaliser. Great atmosphere, wished I could have stayed longer. Colin

In some cases I would agree but is it that critical? I personnally don't think so! Sometimes we can splash down to great effect and if the fish are well down, they don't even mind a WF8 Di8 crashing in. Now on a chalk stream it might be a case of a DT3 but even I would have a job to splash one of those down. He who casts further doesn't always catch more fish, but he sure as hell covers a lot more and gets more chances. Colin [splash to his friends]
  5. I use Fulling Mill 5, 6 & 7lb. Still use a tucked half blood knot for the flies and 4 turn water knot for the droppers, never have any trouble. Just make sure you lubricate the knots before tightening. Perhaps the real secret is to make sure the line is not old stock, so go to a shop with a big turnover of line. Colin
  6. Which college do you work at Colin? I work for Cambridge University Press & live in nearby village of Bar Hill although should be moving to Papworth in October. All questions I know, but where do you fish around here?[/QB] Polly, it's the friendly one, St. Catharine's! Believe it or not I live in Bar Hill! Check out the local website www.barhill.org.uk it's one of mine. As to where do I fish, mainly spring to autumn the AW reservoirs for Trout. Winter it's into the fens after that [very elusive] 30lb Pike.

  17. Try the Shakespeare Condex! Not sure about the disc drag, but unless you are going after Bone fish etc, why do you need one? About £30 for the Salmon size and about 300 yards of backing needed, now that should be enough for any bone fish as well. Colin
  18. A Needle knot is required for this or you could form a loop and just use a grinner or tucked half blood knot. I am sure you could find an explanation of the needle knot on the www. Tight lines Colin
  19. Leader strength depends on your intended species and fly size. EG Reservoir trout feeding on fry 8-12lb hook sizes 10 - 2. Reservoir trout on buzzers 4 - 7lb hook sizes 14 - 10 or smaller. Not an exacting science on my part but experience tells me [i hope] Different types of line also have a bearing. Double strength monos use the same dia. as the normal mono eg 6lb normal 10-12lb d/s. Hope this helps Colin

  24. Do you know that as from 17th May, the money you earn will be yours! It takes that long to pay the government it's taxes for the year. How long before Gordon has us working until June before we earn a penny for ourselves? Colin.
