  1. It was the most impressive thing i thought about Wingham when i was a member the different wildlife but more so with the birds. Hirudines really were there in flocks one moment and gone in the next. Sparrowhawks are getting very common nowadays and many are spotted up to the gates and like you said i have never seen so many Hobbies in one area and i used to breed them. Bitterns are quite popular in that area of the SE. I once saw a Merlin there which although i have flown have never seen in the wild. You would get more birds of prey if it was not for the fact that the rabbits are shot due to its geographical area including possibly Buzzards and just maybe as they are slowly on the increase Goshawks but that's mainly because novice falconers are losing them and they are adapting to the wild...

PS....I tried not to be anywhere near a Nightingale when i fished and if i did i just stayed up to night fish as whats the point

We were next to Nightingale Alley, what a to go to sleep serenaded by Nightingales! We missed out on hearing the Bittern as the Saturday Rock concert from the Pub in Wickhambreaux drowned it out.

  2. Well what to say, my first Coarse fishing session for over four years and I bag a PB Tench of 8.00lbs and caught on a piece of plastic sweetcorn another first. Mind you if it wasn't for a superb bit of netting by my ghillie Sue, I would have lost it at the net.

Between us it was complete chaos landing a fish in the dark for the first time in years, petty someone didn't video it.

I must pass on Sue and my thanks to Steve for a great weekend and to Peggy for the excellent BBQ on Sunday afternoon. I also am grateful to Vagabond for winning the mini fly reel that saved me a few hundred quid that I would have spent on a new 1# rod to go with it.

And the Coarse fishing... well I have just ordered a new specimen rod and I am thinking of those summer Tench.

  3. With ANZAC day coming up in a couple of days it seems appropriate to listen to what is, in my opinion, the greatest song about war ever written.

"They turned all their faces away"

No Man's Land also by Eric comes pretty close!
  4. Last time I fished off the beach, I used braid for the first time. I was using light gear and rolling a lead around in (vain) hope of bass, and the improvement in feel was amazing compared to mono. I could feel the rocks, the seaweed, that I wasn't getting any bites...

    Steve

I bet you were using a fixed spool

braid is a pig to use with shorecasting multipliers as it beds in when power casting causing mahoosive birds nests and break offs.

  5. After spending much time sorting out and cleaning the cooking and camping stuff, and organising tackle boxes and tying hooklengths, I'm now approaching being almost ready.

Wingham will mark the beginning of this year's session fishing for me. After the fish in, I'll be making a start on those crucians :)

So a nice easy target then!

  6. Well, thats the bivvying up stuff, sorted from the shed; most of it scruffy but intact. Mice have managed to chew through my good Korum net but it is just about serviceable and one chair is ruined, luckily it was the one we rarely used. Off up to the loft to sort out the rods and terminal tackle; it will be interesting to see what I have!

  7. Yes very good points about keeping warm! It'll be hard to enjoy it if you're too cold. I expect it will feel surprisingly cold at night, even if it's hot in the day.

I think I will be fishing lobs on all rods during the day (and float fishing if the swim is suitable) with mainly perch in mind, switching over to mini bolt rigs and fake baits at night for tench and (maybe!) bream. I don't expect to be feeding much but will keep each swim topped up with a little groundbait and maggots. In the past I've had good perch from swims prepared for tench and bream so I don't think I need to fish separate spots for the different species, except perhaps a perch-specific spot right in the margins if they're deep.

The other thing I'm doing differently is having the perch rods all made up ready to go so I can get baits in the water ASAP on arrival. I'll then sort out the proper feature finding and baiting later on once I think any morning feeding spell has passed.

Then up before dawn each day to switch the rods back so I have worms out ready for dawn :)

Thanks for the tip I will follow your example, I don't think I will alter the rig set ups I used from a few years back they cannot possibly have changed too radically, I may have to get down to a tackle shop though to get some new leads and hooks.

  8. I've seen loads of Swallows, Red Rumped Swallows, House Martins, Sand Martins, Crag Martins, Alpine Swift, Pallid and Common Swift; then again I have been in Andalucia for the last two weeks..

  9. I go long with Ken look at Catalonia and the Rio Ebro, resorts like Salou and Cambrils offer easy access to fine beaches and the historic city of Tarragona (the Roman Capital of Hispanica) and lots of guides doing day trips for Carp and Catfish on the Ebro.
