  1. The 506 is the one for me, I over the years I have had 501, 506 and 1044 and I would say the 501 or 506. My 506 is some 30 years old and it still works like new and I use it about twice a week for the past 15 years, the 1044 was ok but I used to get line twist so it had to go, I have had some anglers ask if I whould like to sale it or swap it but the answer is no.
  2. All right if you are in to catching but its not fishing. Fishing is some think else.
  3. Anyone knows where to park for Pink Hill lock on the Thames as I have been told that they are some big Chub to be found there in the winter, also where I am likely to find barbel on the upper Thames.
  4. I have fished the Oxford canal and Cherwell no and off for some 25 years and have never been ask for my licence by the EA or any one else in all that time but I have fished a small farm fishery and in 4 weeks I seen the same bloke from the EA 5 times in 11 times I was there and the best bit its all old guys like me fishing there, so what is this all about maybe its about figures. I think it is a waste resource which means your money. I would like to see the EA figures on what they spend the licence fee on its all right saying they are doing flood alleviation scheme on the Norfolk Broads (The project is being carried out as a Public Private Partnership Project for the Environment Agency) does this mean we are paying for this twice. Don’t get me wrong I am all for the work the EA is doing but I would like to be better informed. I have never seen any EA accounts it maybe a good idea to put them in that Reel magazine. EA licence money is only spent on angling is this a fact or just ear say. If we are paying for the EA we should be entitle to the facts.
  5. Anyone knows which club has the rights to the fishing on the Thames above Tadpole Bridge to Inglesham and there any free fishing in this area, I have been told it is very good for big chub. Thanks
  6. I am looking for a guy by the name of Rick Jackson or maybe Rick Jameson. I need to find him soon as he does some chub guiding on the Thames and I would like to book a date with him. I know he is a member of the Chub Study Group but I can not find an address for them. Phone number or address would be great.
  7. Thanks Steve I have been on the phone to Reel Care and the bail arm (string) or even spring is in the post, so my trust old Mitchell 300A should be up and running soon.
  8. Anyone know ware I can get a Bail arm string for my trust old Mitchell 300A, as my one have finely broken after 27 years of use.
  9. I used to help a lot on Anglers Net but I find that the response is less than grateful and general unpleasant. I changed my login name due to the insult I received and I do not help as much as I used too. I am OAP with 58 years fishing experience I may not know all the answers but I do know a few.
  10. The point I think as been missed, Avon rod is for Avon style of fishing the traditional was an X3 cast or in new money 5lb. The JW Avon system rod or old original Avon is only rated at maximum 6lb why do you think this is? 10lb is a bit like cracking a nut with a lump hammer. There is a point were the reel drag will not help, if you hook a 10lb plus Barbel what use is drag when the fish is already in the snag? I some times go Chub fishing with a fly rod rated at 6/7 but I do know its limitations or maybe I should beef it up with some 10lb line that should do the trick. Cheers, Old Tony
  11. J.K Ten pound is a bit on the heavy for Avon style of fishing, the traditional Avon style was an X3 cast or in new money 5lb. I think if you look at modern Avon rods the maximum is around 6lb which is in keeping with tradition. As for using braid with an Avon style it go against the grade and I also think you will lock the rod up on big fish which may cause damage to the rod and the fish. Cheers, Old Tony
  12. I used to fish colne some 8 years ago must go back and give a try. What bit are you fishing Hermes, I used to fish Uxbridge and West Drayton some good Chub and Barbel.
  13. I have been using braid of 30lb Power Pro for the past 3 years and I have had no trouble with it. You will soon know what a take is like, it some times quick snatch (miss) or real bang. When you first start pike fishing it’s is best to fish right angles to the lure in this way you will feel the action of the lure, most times you do not need to strike as the braid is more direct, I use a short wire leader (8” to 12” ) with crane swivel and snap link before I tie the braid the wire leader I put 2 6mm or 8mm rubber beads this helps reduce the weed pickup on the lure. Old Tony
  14. Thanks Chris I have just ordered one. It's time to say goodby to my old cane one. Old Tony
  15. I am look for a long landing net handle about 9ft, as the bank I am fishing from is 7ft away from the water and all most vertical so a will need it to be strong as I will be lifting it vertical. Thanks Old Tony
