  1. No probs. I figured the minced fish tactic would do the attracting without filling them up too. Must have worked!

  3. I agree with budgie and personally I think if you are catching that many pike from the Nene, you are already doing extremely well. I have fished parts of the Nene myself over the last few years with relatively little success. I was lucky enough to land a 20 from a club water that includes some stretches of the Nene although the actual water was a lake. This was more by luck than judgement to be honest and I was certainly not targetting a big'un by design. I still had a small (approx 10oz) jack pike in my hand when the big un took the bait, lamprey as it turns out, so it goes to show that you'll get them of all sizes... I hasten to add that this is my one and only pike of 20lbs! On the point of prebaiting, I later fished the same water with a friend. I had been thinking about prebaiting but due to the water being a half hours drive away, knocked the idea on the head. What I did instead was buy some very cheap supermarket fish (whole sardines) and blended them with some oatmeal, then rolled them into balls with a lump of gravel in the middle and froze them. Upon arrival to the water, these balls (about golf ball size) were sporadically fired around using a catapult in relatively close proximity to my baits and we then took 10 pike to 14.5lb in the morning. That was the most hectic pike sport I have ever had. No twenties though that day....
  4. Rod - eat what you like and fair play to you! I'm certainly no specimen but am probably large enough to tempt a great white of reasonable proportions due to my recent penchant for tesco's doughnuts. Mmmm, so jammy.
  5. The whole one-species-over-another is kind of like why you would eat pigs, chickens, cows and sheep but not cats, dogs, horses etc. I saw fresh mirror carp on the fishmonger's counter in Morrisons t'other day and have to say it kind of took me by surprise, but on reflection (no pun intended), it's no different to a trout, salmon, herring blah blah. Then there is vermin - which species is it ok to shoot/poison? Rats - Yes. Mice - Yes. Rabbits- Yes. Squirrels? err.... Cute little birdies? umm..... Foxes? Yeah we can kill them so long as you don't tear them to bits with dogs. If it's legal to do it, by all means do so but use your own discretion. I think you'd struggle to find a genuine "angler" that's ever put anything even nearing specimen size on a hook to catch something else.
  6. Anybody know if it's possible to lure-fish Sywell Reservoir for pike outside of the oct-mar "pike" season?
  7. Managed to pinch a couple of hours lure fishing for some pike at my local club lake on Monday but upon arrival could not believe how busy it was! Thought I'd persevere and make use of the swims that were vacant, or should I say "appeared to be vacant"... The lake sits within the main river and one of its backbrooks and so is long and narrow, and on 3 separate occasions, I was shouted at from the opposite bank and told in no uncertain terms "you can't fish that swim, I've got a bait in it". What?! Now I'm no carp angler and maybe because of that I have missed something here but am I alone in thinking that setting up in one swim, and then casting your baits right to the opposite bank and occupying 2 swims for the price of 1 with each rod is just a little bit selfish and furthermore, bloody stupid? These "anglers" seem unable to keep quiet enough to make their own margins worth fishing so seem to think it perfectly alright to monopolise almost the entire lake. Miffed I was. Anyone else experienced anything like this? Am I being unreasonable?
  8. Hi All, I've been out fishing today and also went earlier in the week. Using lures only I was after pike and perch and out of about 12 hours of thrashing the water, I have only landed 1 fish. Fair play it was a 2lb stripey and a fish to be proud of but out of the rest of the time spent on the bank, most of it was spent having the mickey taken out of me by various members of the Esox and Perca clans. I have been fishing the river Nene and started at a weir pool - from the elevated position of the concrete wall, much of the sub-surface is clearly visible and the pike and perch can be observed following the lures (all different kinds, softs, plugs, spinners, the whole 2 boxes!). You might be wondering where I'm going wih this - bear with me... Until last year I had never livebaited for predators in my life, believing that a skillfully fished lure will be almost as effective if not AS effective. How wrong I was! It was only when fishing the same weirpool as I have been back to this week that I realised how Perch and Pike in clear water will sometimes ONLY feed on live fish prey, even ignoring maggots, worms etc. On this particular day last year, having landed a number of small perch and roach I watched as a shoal of 4 or 5 very large perch moved into the swim, presumably attracted there by the activity. Would they take a worm or maggot?! Not a chance. They swim up to a bait, nose at it and then turn away. However, the smaller perch would still quite happily take the maggots and no sooner did they become hooked, the larger perch went wild. Apparently hunting in a pack they would swarm on the fish as I hurriedly tried to get them in safely! Seeing an opportunity to land a fat stripey, I grabbed my lure rod from the car and came back to the swim once setting up only to become utterly frustrated with the distinct lack of interest from the big fish! I decided to purposely try a livebait (for the first time) and was amazed. Using heavier tackle, every bait that hit the water was taken immediately, majoritively by perch but then I landed 2 pike that I wasn't even aware were there. I just could not believe it! This week has only been made more frustrating by my inability to catch any livebait (due to not having any maggots or worms with me, stupidly) but I have no doubt that had I been in posession of a few live ones, the pike and perch that have smugly taunted me by doing everything but taking my lure would not have been so smug afterall. In summary, in total of 3 days fishing experience on the same part of the same river, over a period of 12 months, my view on livebaiting has gone from an "unecessary practice" to an "essential tool" that will make a difference between catching, and not. The effectiveness of this method, in my opinion as a predator angler, could not have been brought home to me without witnessing what I have.
  9. Anyone know how I can get in touch with the man himself? He used to fish with my dad way back when and I'd like to get them back in touch. Any help greatly appreciated!
  10. Hi all, I was wondering if any of you knew what a signed split-cane fly rod built by Geoff Bucknall would be worth and if any of you would be interested in buying it? A friend of mine has asked me to sell it for her - I believe Geoff built if for her father. It is in good overall condition but could do with a re-varnish I think. I also have been given by the same person 2 x Geoff bucknall books, one of which is signed and I believe it's a 1st edition. The titles are: Resevoir Trout Fishing (Signed in 1971) Fly-fishing tactics on still water I also have another split cane rod which is multi-use. It's 5 piece and can be used as a fly rod with 2 possible tip-strengths or will also set-up as a spinning rod (the reel-seat and cork handle is detachable and reversible). I have to say, it's stunning but I have no idea who built it and when, but it's been in the family for years. It only collects dust at the moment and although I have tried to have it valued before, no-body seems to know what price to put on it! Any help would be much appreciated!
  11. So Ringstead it is then?! Does anyone have any contact details for Mr McDonald?
  12. Hello all - been a while since I've been on here! I have the rather good fortune of living near Rutland and Graffam Water and also Ringstead trout fishery in Northants. I want to try and get out one of these in a boat in the coming few months and was wondering if any of you guys/gals could help me out with who I need to speak to/suck-up-to or bribe? Keep it reel. (sorry, couldn't resist!)
  13. I fish for pike whenever I can (which is not very often anymore!) as they are my preferred species. The lake I fish is predominantly a carp water, and have only ever seen 1 other person pike fishing there with no success. If you have fish-care as your priority, I don't see why you cant fish for a species all year round, especially if you are catching them all in A1 condition. Is there a problem with much publicised lure-fishing for pike in the summer?
  14. heres some pics - varying sizes. Some pics were taken on one of those old-fashioned film camera type things so we dont have them "developed" yet!
