  1. Me too and I also use Bullguard to protect my PC
  2. Coincidence! I have just had a work break due to a knee replacement and decided to use the enforced rest to restore my old cane MK IV Avon rod. I found the people at Hopkins & Holloway superbly helpful in suggesting rings, whipping silks, sealants, varnish etc etc. The rod is all done now and looks superb. Rather than pay to have the rod restored have a bash yourself. If I can do it anyone can!! What ever you do don't damage the label /decal any more than it is Good luck
  3. I am staying at Odney on Tuesday night and expect to be able to wangle a few hours fishing during Tuesday. Any local knowledge would be much appreciated. I have already spoken with the friendly tackle shop who suggested Cookham Weir. Has anyone fished the area recently or anyone fished within the Odney Estate. I guess I should expect some chub and maybe barbel action (I hope) Thanks in advance
  4. On a local stretch of stream that Vagabond knows well I am having lots of success with crust, legered on a short link just enough to hold bottom but not too much to make it static. The crust will pop up and waver in the current. It's cold so the fish won't move much to find food, youv'e got to find them, especially on small streams. We have had them up to 4.5lbs during the recent cold snap. Also caught brownies on crust intended for the chub !!
  5. I used this type of ledger many many years ago but instead of a bead I used a small shot as a stop and instead of the ring I used a snap link swivel in the smallest size. I had several links made up with different weights to allow for the pace of the river. This made moving from a fast riffle to a slower section very easy as it was so quick to change the end tackle.
  6. Reading these posts takes me back. I have just dug out my MK1V Avon that I built from a kit whilst I was a schoolboy in the 60's. I guess we must have bought it form JB Walker, the name does ring a bell. I still have the book Rod Building for Amateurs by Dick Walker price 5 shillings. I had never built a rod before, I was only 12 / 13 and my dad was no help being next to useless at DIY but with patience and I guess a bit of luck the ferrules went on true. The rod is still straight as a die. Only use carbon now but would like to try a short cane fly rod for small streams. The action I guess is much slower and more suited to short casts.
  7. Of course Brown Trout should be protected. They are the sign of a healthy river, just like the presence of grayling are. However I do not feel I am sufficiently enough qualified to comment on the use of triploid browns. I can understand the point about cross breeding however. Am I right in thinking that almost each watercourse trout appear in has it's own strain. If that is the case there is a very strong point to make for stocking each river only with fish bred from the strain. I know many others will say 'No Stocking' at all, invest in very good keepering and let the trout flourish with help. A very good case for this is demonstrated by a guy called Warren Slaney who looks after an estate water in Derbyshire. If his work could be replicated there would be no need to have a discussion on stocking BUT C & R would become a requirement I guess. If you want one for the pot you would have to fish a stocked pond / lake / reservoir
  8. Flashfly, I live in Crowborough and have my name down on the waiting list for your old club. Rother and its tributaries do hold wild browns. Have a look at this link it was pointed out to me by Vagabond who mainly posts in the Coarse Fishing section.http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/authors/roger10.htm I have just joined the Teise Owners and Anglers for season 2006. I cannot recommend as I have not fished the river yet but it is a small stream and looks promising. Follow this link http://www.teiseangling.co.uk/index.htm Hope this helps Damper
  9. Try ebay. I have been very happy with flies purchased from DragonFlies. Good prompt service, email communication and the flies catch.
  10. 46 years but with gaps due to raging male hormones and then family building etc. Just rediscovered my first ever rod, solid fibre glass and also a rod I built from a kit when a teenager. It's a split cane Mk IV Avon rod. I still have the book 'Rod Building for Amateurs' by Dick Walker which guided me through it.
  11. I am sneaking out to the Test for a spot of grayling fishing on the 30th. I have just purchased some bugs and nymphs on e-bay. Hope they arrive in time and it doesn't rain and it isn't windy. Don't mind the cold though. Good luck to everyone else going out.
  12. I can't even remember how many I caught but I was a novice fisher, Ist or 2nd year at new grammar school. So must have been over 40 years ago. We arranged a match v other anglers in the years above us. The venue was the Mill Pond overflow stream, one of the headwaters of the Sussex Adur. It had been pouring for days and the little stream was a raging, muddy torrent. We all found holes up and down the stream and I settled in one which offered any fish present respite from the current. My first lesson in watercraft I guess. I had also just read about stret-pegging, does anyone still do it? ( its not something one does in private with a consenting partner) and it did the trick. Well, it all went right for me. I had what I can recall a huge bag of roach and 1 clonker that we all agreed was over 1lb but the old scales were not too accurate then. I won the match, my year group won the sweepstake but the older lads would not pay up and because we were smaller could not enforce it. I mainly fly fish now, my love of small streams has always stayed with me and I still remember that bag of roach.
