  1. However I do have these on my laptop. easy to access on the net. Just a little light reading. http://icesjms.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/64/7/1444 http://icesjms.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/64/7/1491 Regards. Tony.
  2. Thanks for the welcome back. Budgie, Give me a little time and I will dig out some info for you to read through. may take a while as i will have to put my old pc back together to access the hard drive.
  3. Does the NAC have an ongoing policy on the subject of pettitioning government etc on this issue? Any studies/reports on such that we could see? Hi Budgie, Its been quite a while. I am no longer within the NAC and so I can not comment on the work being done by Mark and the rest of the NAC committee. I can how ever confirm that Clive Dennison (former Eel Study Group and NAC) and Myself ( former NAC) are still making head roads into the situation regards eels and their decline. We are still currently in dialog and submitting views and opinions on a few issues at present to the EA and wider European Union. states to continue with the recovery plans. (Just keeping them aware that they are being watched) On the subject of papers, which specific info would you wish to read? I will try to pass over some info if you can be more specific. Regards and keep well, Tony.
  4. Hi All, I've not been on here for ages. Nothing much seems to have changed. Well done to Mark and Dave for flying the NAC banner. For those who don't remember me, I talked a lot about the eel decline. long before it was common knowledge. I lobbied the EA and Defra, putting the concerns of the UK eel anglers over the falling eel and elver numbers and also the un-controlled commercial eel and elver fisheries. Well where are we up to now?? Well. there has been world wide recognition of the problems facing the eel. The EA and Defra in the UK have put the EMP's together. following on from the European Eel resolution , which Clive Dennison and I drafted for the EAA, some time ago now. The wheels turn very slowly. but they are turning. It has been suggested, and correctly so that the focus of attention be on the commercial trade in eels. That was our aim for many years. That work will see maturity in the future. starting I believe with controlled or even a total ban on elver netting. This is already being muted along with registered dealerships, which was a proposal in the MAFF review. To the lad who posted his original question and to those who have replied. Eels ARE in a state of serious decline. there are isolated populations which seem to go against this line of thought. But you must always remember that the European Eel, (Anguilla anguilla) is a European wide species. The species cannot rely on some restrictions in some areas. but there needs to be a European wide ban on the export of elvers to the far east. There was a bird once called the Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) eaten by sailers who thought they where not doing any harm. we all know how that story ends. I am not going to preach about taking eels for the pot. you can make your own minds up on that one. but remember as Leon pointed out eels are used by scientists as indicators as to how polluted and what levels of chemicals/ toxins are present in our waterways. as the spend much of there time buried in the silt, their flesh absorbs these chemicals, some of which are very nasty. if you still want to eat eels after reading this then you must have eaten too many already. http://www.thermo.com/eThermo/CMA/PDFs/Var.../File_31118.pdf Thats just one paper there are loads on the net if you don't believe me. Regards, Tony.
  5. Hi Wayne. Which club control the runcon end. I have heard of a couple. Can you clarify it for me?. Regards. Tony.
  6. Budgie. I know all your posts regards eels are being put with the knowledge of an "EX Netsman" I appreciate your honesty on the subject. I always find your posts show balanced opinions. The NAC held a fishin on a Kent water this summer. Two days after we had fished two men were seen in broad daylight illegally removing eels from the water, with nets that had been set for 2 weeks in the water without the owners concent. All types of fishing is now banned on the water. including angling. Very Sad.
  7. Budgie, I think a net of that size is designed with only one purpose in mind, To catch EVERYTHING that swims near it. Anglers dont realise the number of "their" fish which get caught and taken by commercial nets men in inland waters. they would be shocked if they knew the true numbers. A commercial intreast in netting a dwindling stock will make as much money as it can from whatever catch it retains and can sell on. Theirs always someone who will buy from them.
  8. not a small net either!!! http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h...cial_s%26sa%3DN
  9. Sounds more like a fyke net, eels will be returning to the sea to spawn. fyke nets catch many "bi-catch" fish as well as eels.
  10. I have been thinking of a line to put on my bait runners for the pike this winter. I have seen the Berkley Vanish Transition In the 14lb, Does anyone know if its much good? I have used braided line for the last 10 years so I have lost touch with most of the new lines out there. Regards. Tony.
  11. Thanks Brian. Hopeing to get over there this weekend do you ahve any contact details mate?. Judy. mmm
  12. Tremendous eel Warren. Well done from the National anguilla club membership.
  13. Was looking for the yorkshire water with rumour of very large tench, think this is it. Great and thanks again.
  14. Nurse Judy, I think I luv you. luv Tony.
  15. Any one heard of a water called the potteries or some thing along those lines? Many thanks for any replys.
  16. Hi Budgie. Couldnt resist with an invite like that. lol. Some eel anglers swear by wire and say they dont have any problems with its use. I do prefare a trick told to me by Steve EELFISHER which is to add about 3 inches of the very soft rubber sleeving which he and I believe takes off the wire feel from the eels teeth just push it down on to the eye of the hook and have the rest covering the first 3 inches of wire, this adds the ability to see how far the eel may have taken the hook into its mouth as you can judge by the amount of rubber you can see. I am one of those anglers who does use quick silver for hook lenghts. Not had a problem with it to date and I am also using the Solar shock leader braid as well with good results. No need to thread baits on to your hooks as this has the tendancy to 1. on the strike mask the hook and secondly the eel will have the hook right down its throat by the time a strike is commonly made. i usually just hook the bait at the furthest point from the head works for me. The tip with the dead maggots is spot on. nice one. had many eels with that tactic. Dont neglect your margins on canals regardless of depth or features. canals are not the barren looking places they seem on first views. the amount of rubbish makes the canals unique eel habitat. like the ship wreck and conger they go together perfectly. Always return your eels. Treat them with the respect you would treat your fav fish with. Hope that helps and good eeling.
  17. Hi All. Sat on this for a while so as not to influance any opinions on the subject. Most of you will have seen many of my posts on this subject over the years many made at a time when it was not wide public knowledge that the eel was in total melt down. As a National Anguilla Club member I will answer Zedheads opinion. I am in total agreement with you Zed head, (cool name). I have been a member of the NAC for over 13 years, and all my time as a member has been dedicated to trying to protect the species. through my time as general secretary whilst i have always maintained my position as Environmental co-ordinator with the help of Clive Dennison former ESG member now NAC we have opened up many debates across Europe through the political body Eel Conservation Society (ECS) many friends have been made to protect the eel. And with the processes going through at European level to protect the eel we have been very influential in these talks. with the help of SAA and EAA before. The NAC's concerns regarding the eels survival has always been at the top of its agenda for many years now and will continue to be for the future. I am pleased to see so many of you in favour of protectiong the eel
  18. I cant understand why posts are put on here on behalf of a visitor why dont they just sign up and log in them selves. after all we all did at some point.???????????????? Always seems very dodgy to me.
  19. Nice one ayjay. Never tried that method before. ill try that some time.
  20. Some of you may know this TOP SECRET method. LOL. Take 1lb of the mixers of your choice. (Chum mixer or any other hard type.not any soft type). be sure to wiegh them out. Take 160ml of cold water add any flavours you wish and any colours to the 160ml of water mix well.. Get the largest sealable bag or food bag that you can get your hands on. pour the 160 ml of water in to the bag and blow the bag up and twist the top around a few times. Now shack it up so you have coated the insides of the bag evenly. making sure there is as little water in the corners of the bag as possible add your 1lb of mixers. blow the bag up again and twist the top around a few times. now shake the bag up until there is no wetness in the bag whatso ever making sure the mixers have soaked up all the flavored water. Now this is the down side you must leave the mixers in the blown up bag in the fridge overnight. or this wont work. When you open the bag later you should have the best floaters you have ever used. Things to remember in this method are. the amount of water no more or less then 160ml plus your flavours, be sure to shake mixing the coulours and flovours together before adding them to the bag. you can of course just add the water without colours of flavours. I always mix the flavours in a small bottle say a panda pop or coke bottle first. Make sure you dont put too much floavours in the baits or you can make them smell too much. if you arnt confident with the flavour adding do them without. make sure you have left them over night. These mixers will not swell up in the bag they just stay the same size as they were when dry. They will keep in a sealed bag in you tackle for ages without going off. and will not go hard again unless left out in the dry air for ages. Hope you enjoy them. Tony. This message will self distruct in 10 seconds, 1, 2,3,
  21. You can soften, colour and flavour any chum mixer to any colour/ flavour you like. takes about 10 miniutes to do and makes them great for hooking no need of a drill or bait band just straight on the hook. Anyone intreasted?.
