  1. Hi Adam I launched mid March but blanked on fish - Was going to launch today but it seems the offshores are going to pick up quite a bit so may have to wait. Haven't heard of any spinning catch reports yet but I was catching this time last year. cheers

    Bass Bandit

hi Pav, hows it going? Are you talking about the solid Bass Bandit which i think is featured a lot in Veals catalogue or do you mean the TraceAce Bass Bandits and Assassins? (basically leadheads with different flapping tail configurations) If its the latter, then we use them and find they catch on the troll or cast & retrieve - its more about the depth and conditions round our way. Been out much? catching? rich
  4. hello mate, have a look at the projects on SM's site here: http://www.anglersafloat.co.uk/Prowler_Fishfinder.htm should answer some of your questions. Rich
  5. Hi Steve Yeah we were on the Pacific coast and toured from the south up to the Nicoya Peninsula. We stayed in some pretty nice hotels but I know you can get super cheap digs if needs be. Some buddies that were there at the same time were getting hotel apartments at £50 a night and splitting that 3 ways, they had air con and a kitchen. There are cheaper and more expensive available of course, but all in all I found it good value. Ah the Roosters! The Kayak hire guy would tell me each day where they hung out but alas I didn't catch one or land one anyway, definately had a couple of large unknowns on but they got away - Ah that old gem. Cheers
  6. Hello Chaps, Just got back from a grand trip to Costa Rica, the place is truly blessed. Thought I'd share a few photees with you. I always intended to fish here when I was planning the trip but I didm't want to go down the road of expensive Chartered Sport Fishing trips, plus I wanted to get a bit of yakking in too. So I slipped a cheap spinning rod into my surfboard bag and assorted lures, swivels, traces etc into my kit bag, and I was off in hope of catching. I'd tried to do some research before I set off regarding shore fishing and inshore waters but they are so "off shore charter" orientated it was tricky, what I did find confirmed that similar tactics to spinning here apply and that I could encounter such exotics as Snook or Mahi Mahi! Although I didn't catch these or catch the size of the fish the guys on the charters were catching, I never expected the fun I did have. There were schoolie Tuna jumping all over the place and after a paddle of about 1km out I was in to my first fish. My reel was literally screaming, these little Tuna I guess must have been around the 3 - 5 lb mark with very dense barrel shaped bodies their outlines belied their weight. I hooked into a couple of bigger fish which really fought, doubling the rod over and threatening to rip the tackle off at which point I thought I may have come under gunned - they both threw the hooks. Great fun, I've got to go back. Meanwhile we're waiting for the surf to die down here in North Devon as its around 6ft at the moment! Cheers Rich

  10. hello chaps long time no posty posty ive logged in a few times and kept a breast (stop there) of shinanigans which have been great! Ive done the froogle and kelkoo thing but i'd like your advice on the pending purchase of a headlight set up. As many of my purchases dictate it needs to be my first and last purchase but not too expensive. thanks rich

  16. hey lads i feel a need..... a need for.........offshore adventure there are plenty of chaps that whap by me in their epoxy 3kg sea kayaks without the kit that we carry who mooch from point to point, and i would like to know that i could confidently do the same. there is a green bouy marker off of baggy point and i want to go out there so im looking for any advice from dudes that have done it or similar - cheers
  17. great stuff wavey (is that a big night out ref - love it) Regarding getting in....Simon Everett has done me proud for advice. Up here on the North Devon coast as with Cornwall we gat the majority of swell so we often have to head to sheltered beaches and somtimes if the swell is strong we have to face waves on our entry and re-entry. Simon Everett - "Coming in, the easist is to follow a wave in on the back of it - NOT on the front like you are used to. Paddle in on the flat table between sets - as you feel the kayak lifting at the stern stop paddling and let the wave go on underneath you - as it leaves you paddle hard to keep up with it - you can come in through 6' surf like that without actually surfing. It is the opposite of what you are used to - don't catch the wave, lose it! Hope that helps and have a good first time out in the surf. OH, and if it blows up while you are out and the surf increases, you can always back in, facing the oncoming waves. In this case you paddle at the waves as they come, and back the kayak in between them. Then take the next head on (like launching) and come in a bit at time between the waves. You can land in much bigger surf like this than by coming in straight at the beach. I have got the Dorado in through 4m surf (that's over 12 feet) in South Africa like this while she was laden. The Prowler will too, but is less responsive and if the stern gets caught the Prowler WILL broach. The Dorado won't. If you get caught and the wave picks you up - DON'T try to paddle out of it, you cannot paddle fast enough. Instead, use the paddle behind you as a rudder and PUSH the stern into the wave. Also, lean into the wave, not away from it - the kayak will edge and does not like staying flat to a wave. It is easier to show than write! Have fun and stay lucky! Simon. " On a lighter note here are some pics of my bro in law coming in on a tiny wave and finding out the hard way what these style bottoms want to do under momentum... lol what is wrong with the interweb today or i it just me? http://www.myfishingkayak.co.uk/putsboroug...ages/imcool.jpg http://www.myfishingkayak.co.uk/putsborough/images/yeah.jpg
  18. Hi RayJ It was ok but very one-sided, concentrating on the plight of two rival trawlers and seeing how many "Prawns" they could scrap off the bottom of the North Sea. I thought they may talk a bit about the concerns over bottom trawling...maybe they will tonight as its on all week. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottom_trawling http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone/listings/progr...0_4223_39919_30
  19. Hi Starvin yeah my best man runs that site, predominantly a surf check site its getting loads of traffic and is a very useful tool for anyone heading this way. as we started getting into kayakfishing and were taking more and more pictures he decided to put a forum up. I've passed on a few important threads from this forum regarding fish sizes etc to him. cheers kishkash
  20. Yeah, watched it too and got the feeling it wasnt going to get too far, but still interesting. With mass take up and use of camera phones and the advent of low cost waterproof cameras I dont think it will be too long before we see some hard evidence. Another couple of progs to look out for starting this week on the bbc are Trawlermen, tonight i think and Seawatch, weds i think presented by the saucy Kate Humble.....hmm
  21. lol that is classic! ive been on here all day and its getting better and better Scrambler i am intrigued, what is a carbon surf boat?
