  1. Hi,

I'm trying to size down photos of myself for a photo driving licence and some of my parents for their bus pass.

But after many attempts the finished photos are either too big or too small.

The photo driving licence application requires a photo of 45mm x 35mm.

Is there any way / calculation for working out the size of your end print? IE 150x 100 pixels?

I can size down images , its just getting the end print to be the correct size, i could do with some help please !

  2. Thanks for the replies, it makes sence now Argyll that a Handling Charge could be added once VAT and Duty gets charged and not on lower value items.

But the last time i ordered a couple of larger orders from BassPro was 2-3 years back. The packages turned up about a week apart, UPS i'm sure delivered them and i signed their electric pad thing and they handed the packages over. Great i thought, no charges, but a week or so later bills for the Vat and Duty turned up in the mail.

No 'Handling Charges' though, maybe they have become the norm in the last year or two?

Sounds like my small orders will be exempt of all charges which is good news.

  3. I have a few separate small orders coming over from the States. All are well under the £18 value each package including shipping costs so should not get charged VAT or Import tax/duty as i believe it.

Does anyone one have experience of 'Handling Charges' ,knowing whether these apply to larger packages only or is there a starting point for the value of the goods?

I except the Vat & Duty when due but it will take the shine off things if i get hit for 'Handling' on each package as they come through, especially when i have already paid the shipping on them to my door.

How long have these 'Handling Charges' been around? Sounds a bit cheeky to me, asking/demanding for another fee on top of the agreed postage/shipping payment!

  4. PC sorted last Friday and all up and running now. Zone Alarm downloaded on another PC as advised and installed before getting back online.

The engineer turned up ready to replace the M/B and found that it was the connections between the PCI card modem and it's socket. Even though i had tried making sure it was pushed home tightly dust/grit had worked it's way in and broke some of the contacts even though in device magaer it said modem was working correctly.

Took the guy all of 15 mins to sort it out and leave and he also gave me the service pack 2 on a ROM Disc, very nice man :)

No embarrassment from me as i had tried making sure everything was in it's place tightly and i don't know much about the insides and workings of PC's plus thats what the service plans for. It cost £99 for total of 3 years from new.

I know a lot of you guys can take your PC's apart with your eyes closed but when your not confident to do stuff yourself the labour changes soon clock up if you have pay yourself.

Having said that next time somethings not working as it should i will carefully take things apart and dust with a soft brush etc to try and solve it first.

Thanks for all the feedback on this one :)

  5. Thanks for those answers.

i have since checked all the cards and RAM are not loose and still no joy.

Phoned the cover plan people and they ask me to do a few checks on things over the phone. Seems they think somethings dead on the motherboard so they have aranged a home visit to replace the mother board Friday. Whether their engineer will come to the same conclusion is a different matter.

Iv'e taken onboard about installing a fiewall before going back online thank you.

If it turns out to be some thing on the motherboard then i will be glad they twisted my arm into taking the extended cover :)

  6. I don't know if this has been talked about before on here so sorry if it has.

I take a PC into work and often connect to AOL via it's built in 56K dial up modem to check check personal e-mails etc when i get a chance.

over the last few weeks i have have had problems with my PC freezing up when i try to get on line. I have to unplug the PC ( from mains) and restart it. Some days it works fine and i can get online, other days it freezes as above!

As theres not much on that PC i formatted it with the restore disc that came with the PC and the first day it got on line fine, the next it's freezing up again?

Some one said perhaps the modem is on the way out? but if you look in device manager it says it is working properly .

I have just remembered that about 5-6 weeks ago some one else has had broadband enabled on that phoneline and like me only plugs his PC ( and broadband modem and filter) into that phoneline when he is here.

So since then i have been using my dial up modem or phone in that socket without a filter inline.

Obviously it's not effecting his broadband as he takes his set up away with him when i'm here but could this 'un filtered' DSL line be giving my dial up modem/PC system a hammering?

By the way, when i also try to start a free trail of another ISP compuserve the PC freezes as it trys to initiate the modem.

Also if i go into the control panel and go to 'Phone and Modem options' it says the modem is working properly , but if i go onto the 'troubleshoot' section and select any of the three check options the PC freezes up?

Has any one got any ideas as to what could be up, or whether the un filtered DSL line has damaged my dial up modem or system? I will try bringing in a spare filter to use next time to see if that helps/works but the damage may have been done if that was to blame?

The PC is covered by a service/repair plan but trying to sort it myself first in case it's something simple i'm doing wrong.

I'm using XP Home edition and it's been up and running for two years, i did have service pack 2 downloaded but have now lost that in the restore and haven't been able to get online long enough ( dial up) to download it yet.

Thanks in advance for any pointers. :)

  7. Thanks for the replies and info, gratefully received and taken note of.

If we had bought it locally we would of taken it back to the show room and loadly protested, probably on a busy Saturday afternoon in front of loads of prospective customers , but as it came by mail order and they were saying it wasn't a 'fault' we decided to keep the screen as it is for the following reasons:

as the company was saying it wasn't a fault then if we got them to agree to exchange it then we would probably have to pay the P&P to send the first screen back and for another screen to be sent out to us?

As the company are saying that up to four duff pixels isn't a fault then my son may have got another screen with more than one duff pixel and in a more noticable area i.e. middle of screen, so he's keeping the first screen.

Prior to coming to this decision we talked with Trading Standards and it seems to be a bit of a grey area ( as mentioned in the above links)and when asking if we had right to complain we got a mixed answer a bit like 'Vicky Pollard' = Yer But, No But,Yer but! :)

First they said as my son had bought the PC over the web it was classed as a 'Remote sale' ( or similar description)and as such people are entitled to a 7 days 'cooling off' period because this will be the first time you have actually seen the produce for real. However i then told them my son had choosen the the spec he wanted put in the PC ,'Aah' they said , that now makes it a personalised item and the 7 day cooling off does not apply!

They also said sales of goods act says goods should be 'free from minor defects' , which brings us back to who decides whether 1-4 duff pixels are a defect /fault or not?

So the lession we have learnt from this is as far as anyone thinking of buying a TFT LCD Monitor would seem to be double check each companys policy re 'duff pixels' and possibly only buy from a local dealer ( easier to return a faulty item face to face) after checking out thier stores policy on this.

Thanks again for the replies. :)

  8. My son's just bought himself a new PC set up from an online store.

Turned it on and there is what looks like 1x duff pixel about 1cm down from the top right of the screen that shows as a pink/red dot.

Phoned the supplier at the first chance and they did seem to bat an eylid saying that unless it had 4+ duff pixels then it wasn't considered a 'Fault' and they wouldn't replace it.

They said this was the general excepted 'policy' from all manafactuers of such screens and if i went to the citizen advice place i would be told the same!

Sounds like this could be a common fault or are they just trying to shift a load of duff screens?

This is the first TFT LCD monitor we have owned, has any one else heard of this problem on new or near new screens before.

My son payed with a debit card so might not get the help a Visa card may offer if there is a case to answer.

One thing i thought of was if 'they' don't class it as 'faulty' then may be he could exchange it for a different model? Although the monitor was a set piece in that package.

    Thanks in advance.

  9. Please realise i have only basic PC knowledge so go easy on me :D

On one of the PC's i have access to it is on AOL dial-up and one of the AOL features is 'Computer Check-up' which is said to check your pC is set up correctly.

I ran it and it advised that i turn down my 'Temporary Internet Files Folder's' " Amount of disc space used" down to 128mb as it is set at 32000 mb at the moment.

    Does that sound right?

I would of thought the more space it used the better, or does too much data stored bog down and slow some things?

Two other PC's i can use are on Broadband and one of the TIF space used is set to abound 19000 mb and the other 11000 mb.

Does the type / size and spec etc of each PC relate to how much disc space can be used to store temp stuff , and or the type of internet connection ?

Is a lower amount better, should i set it to that 128mb and maybe also change the other two pC's down to that too?

    Thanks :)

  10. I agree with Peter re the 'Green' wire being good stuff.

I have used it in 20 and 28/30? for lure traces and it does seem a bit less prone to kinking than the standard brown 7 strand.

I twist my traces and with this 'Green' wire i melt the coating by holding a lighter flame 4-6" under the twist just long enough to fuse the coating. Instructions on back of pack i believe.

  11. Ken L:

Just checked on the Harris site to be confronted by a login/registration request before it would let me in.

    Bl00dy cheek !

I get quite enough spam without this sort of blatent tactic for obtaining personal details.

I believe you can view nearly all there products without registering. Go to their home page then click on 'Online Shop' and that takes you to their main products menu.

It's only the 'Half price bargains of the day ' that you can not access without logging in.

  12. Thanks Mike, i had tryed that right click before and on trying it again just now it only gives the option 'OPEN' which takes you to Paint shop pro.

= no 'open with' option appears that i can find yet.

Also when trying it just now on a amminated GIF if gave the options 'OPEN' ( takes you to PSPro )

or 'Quick Time' which if you click on that a yellow triangle sig appears stating 'there is no viewer capable of viewing GIF files!'

Thanks Newt i'm sure i will find the answer on that site somewhere, but as i'm just starting to improve from a couple of days in bed with a flu like bug i'm feeling thicker ( Numb ! ) than usual lol.

I'll have a dig thought soon, thanks again guys :)

  13. On one of the PC's i use it use's win98se. Recently someone must of changed a setting somewhere because before if you clicked on a jpeg icon on the desktop or in a folder the photo just opened , now it goes to 'Paint Shop' which was free sample version and you have to click through all the 'except this & that etc' before you can get to the photo.

I sure it's a simple thing but beyond me at the moment.

    Thanks.

PS, also if you try to play aminated GIFS it just shows it as a 'still' in Paint Shop too???

  14. Hi Newt,

I'm new on XP and AOL, i had expected a few clitchs from what others have said but this was my first to date.

I went with AOL because of two Plus points ( for me ). First i can connect from most UK phone lines without occuring charges to the line owners and second i don't get cut off every two hours.

I was on Freeserve 'Anytime' but that was fixed to one phoneline and cuts you off every two hours and i found it was getting slower and slower.

    These are dial-up connections.

So touch wood there won't be many more problems :D , watch this space as they say !

  15. Thank you, i have changed that setting and now it seems i can save and view web pics on AOL, i have done a few test saves and they work, but the few pictures i saved before still won't open , they must still be compressed? Not to worry they were only test saves , Thanks once again. :)

  16. I'm using a new PC with 'Windows XP Home'.

When using AOL Explorer and i try to right click and 'save as ' to 'my pictures' on a web picture / photo it appears in ' my pictures' as a icon with a sailboat/sunset. When you try to open it by clicking on it it says 'No Preview Available' ? It seems to have saved it as a jpeg but won't display it? I have noticed that on AOL Explorer when i right click and save as it says 'say as 'ART' or 'BITMAP'.

If i use Microsoft explorer on the same PC it saves photos to 'my pictures' and they can be viewed ok and on right clicking a photo gives me the optinion of saving as JPEG or BITMAP.

I can save and access digi photos from my cam ok to 'my pictures'.

Any thoughts as to why when saving photos whilst on AOL i can't view them once saved?

It's probably a simple setting that needs changing somewhere, any advice welcomed thank you.
