  1. Hi there you wont get the Abu 6500 (Mag Elite) in the states as it is a europe model only, also check out a couple of the mail order companys as they may still have some of the "older model" going for £69.99, we have sold out but you could try Gerrys, Tonys, Mainwarings i think they all got some, there is not much difference between the new model and the old model, infact if your lucky there wont be any other than colour.
  2. At present all 6500 and below are still made in Sweden, all above this size were moved to the far east to bring down cost's this however had a few issues as they dont have many scruples over there and reels were copied etc etc, Pure Fishing (owner of Abu Garcia) then set up there own factory so the same standard as Sweden should come through will the new series of reels, there is no talk of 6500's and below being moved from the swedish plant. In all cases the reels have the Abu Garcia warrenty so you have little to worry about should you have a problem, we sold plenty of the Abu 7000 (red) the first reel to be moved across with only a few having a problem with a spring, as an Abu Performance Centre this was an easy fix and all our stock had the spring replaced.
  3. Also hapy to help if needed Elton, will PM you alternative Email info Chris
  4. We have lots of people who come into the shop and ask the same question, we always respond with "how often are you planning to go" if you are planning to go once a week then the next question you need to ask yourself is what do you want to spend, we never ak this as it is up to you, if you can stretch over the £50.00 - £75.00 mark then you are in the mid range of rods, all will do the job you are going to ask it to do and should give you years of service, if you can go up to £100.00 then you have some good rods available to you, as mentioned the Greys GRX-s for £99.00 with lifetime warranty is one to look at, so is the Daiwa Sandstorm and Abu Phazer, all around the £100 mark and all available in Multi or Fixed Spool. If however you are only going to get on on he odd occassion look at the beach rod and reel deals out there, dont go for the lower end look to spend aorund £60.00 you should get a decent rod and an ok reel but you will be looking to change it after 12 months if you use it regular, the Abu Enticer is a good entry level rod and is out there from around £34.00 a good fixed sppol reel can be picked up for around £30.00 but would advise going up just a little more for better and more bearings. Your local tackle shop should give you all the advice you need, we try to help as much as possible to anyone entering the sport, you will also find that once you have explained that you are new advice will be given on marks tactics etc etc, they should be there to help you, unlike the dreaded Ebay sellers who just sell you the item and thats it, you may spend a few £ more but the information you will get is worth it.
  5. To be honest Norm i dont think consumers will notice much difference, even if costs are saved it is not normal for them to be passed on to the consumer, but just added to the profit margin and shared in dividends to the directors and shareholders etc, as a major account with both Pure Fishing and Shakespeare it will be interesting to see what we as retialers get out of it, with luck it will end the stupid price war that most of us are involved in at present, and we could startt making some priofit for once. At this years trade shows some of the companys attempted to end the "deals" in an attempt to stop the slashing of prices on key brands, such as Abu Garcia and JRC products as well as others, seems that this did not work at all as we are all still selling items well below the RRP's (agree these are figures out of thin air at times) Costs to all these companys have been slashed as most products are now produced in the far east, yet the cost to us as retailers and you as consumers has not fallen at all, infact this year seen some rather large increases, cutting our margins back further as the products are still sold at last years prices......... Colin, these companys are all under the Pure Fishing umbrella, same as Gulp and other brands
  6. Pure Fishing have also been taken over .............. So thats one company owning 2 of the worlds largest fishing tackle suppliers http://www.jarden.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=7239...&highlight=
  7. Good choice, however at the moment i would look at the Greys GRX-S for £99.00 and Abu Mag Elites for £69.99, I have always had a Sandstorm and was very impressed with it, but changed to the Greys GRX-S to compare and have to admit the Greys just takes the edge (bare in mind i can have whatever rod i want) and will always suggest Abu 6500 above Daiwa, mainly due to the service and availability of parts as well as never having any problems with them.
  8. At last MACYAK will have a buddy for the Bay ......... Hurry Up and get kitted out Jamie
  9. they have had some good write ups, however the glossy mags are never going to burn bridges with advetisers, Seahog has replied giving all a good idea of the reel, and to be honest he has a good knowledge of the Abu's so he wont have been kind if it was rubbish, the 5 year warranty that they come with is good, but we will only find out how good when you claim. I personally like Abu 6500's and for £40.00 more you get a rell that is tried and tested over the years, a new version of the Mag Elite is out in the next week or so, it has a faster retrieve than the Penn 525mag better bearings and gearing etc etc, basically a whole new design the RRP is £124.00 with a free spooling station on the launch worth £24.99. The new reel has been revamped by the original designer Pete Coogan, so if you can hang on and give this reel a look over.
  10. Most tackle shops will offer a set up that includes both a rod and a reel these can start fro as little as £30.00 but it is a case of you get what you pay for, you mention wreck fishing so i wouls suggest that the reel you need is the Abu 7000 loads of these on the market at the moment for around £69.99 as Abu have changed the spec and brought out the new 7000i series, so you can pick up a bargin, rods will depend on a number of things but again as you mention wrecking then i would suggest a 20 - 30lb class as a min for those big Pollock, Conger, Ling etc. We currently have an Abu premium uptide rod with abu 7000 CS Pro Rocket for £89.99 but i am sure a tackle shop in your area will also have the same deals. Chris
  11. I dont really like Fish, stange as it maybe running a large website and owning a fishing tackle shop but i love all shellfish, but it has to be VERY fresh to get the real flavour.

  14. i gave up 3 weeks ago, main reason = so i can go for a pint when the ban comes into force without having to go outside.......... problem i forsee is ... I worked for the fag industry for 12 years, my job was actually to promote smoking, i was a shopfitter for Rothmans & Marlboro, we dealt with all thier instore advertising and many other campaigns. the goverment expect over 600,000 people to give up once the ban comes into place, they also expect to see a large increase in drinking related problems, domestic violence as smokers will drink at home and normally lots more, they also expect to see an increase in unemployment within the "pub sector" a well known fact is that since the ban has been in place in Scotland and Southern Ireland a massive amount of public house' s have closed thier doors, with upwards of 600,000 people trying to kick the habit (that the goverment introduced) the cost to the NHS will far outway the actual cost of dealing with smoking related illness's, there will also be a massive whole in the revenue borught into the coffers, this will have to be covered in some way and most likley to be - Fuel, Income Tax, VAT, Beer & Spirits etc etc, the things that most of us use each and every day. Lets see who will be happy then .......
  15. with respect Chris - we have overheads, we dont RIP people off at all.
  16. the restriction will noramlly only stand for "commercial" digging and collection, not for "joe Bloggs" going to collect his bait for a days fishing.. we have the same in place here already.
  17. 2 Points from me ..... I run alot of matches and as a result of consultation with local anglers and the like we have moved away from catch and release matches and back to wiegh match's, and the reasons are very simple, The lots of clubs and others run catch and release matches to very small sizes indeed normally 20cm, this results in many more fish being injured or dying during a match than a "bag wieght", most look at this as conservation, but it is far from that and numbers of anglers taking part in such match's have slipped away, we have ran our match's for the past 3 years on a 2 fish rule, 1 round & 1 flat, this has proved a success in many ways, as all fish have to be in size then anglers are not fishing for undersize fish and this leads to less fish being killed, it has also had other positive reactions not only from those taking part but fom other areas around the country, today seen the start of the winter league that we run 52 angers turned and 10 went tot he scales (all with single fish) so this means that only 10 fish had been retained (all returned alive) yet if it had been catch and release with 52 anglers taking part and small size limits how many fish would not have made it back alive? 2nd - I own a tackle shop, and from time to time we do get survey's carried out, be it from the trade or goverment bodies so i suppose the figures of amount of anglers and money spent hold some truth, the goverment themselves want to double the amount of anglers by 2012, and i am sure this covers all aspects of our sport, but they do need to listen to people on the ground and not people in nice offices that go under organisational names.
  18. thanks Newt, but also remind us when it is safe to change back as you know what we are like :-)
  19. Fast edit as i was at a trade show Thursday / Friday so my time was running out, i added a tank to keep with the "military" feel that was first added, also as the tank had some light on one side i added a flare to replicate the sun breaking through a cloud.
  20. no image Steve ....... got it now
  21. Thanks for the reply's, the tank has now settled and is all running well (still not adding the new fish) the problem seems to have been the drop in PH and minerals, the filter was fine to be honest as i change the "pad" each week and squeeze out the blocks each month (in the water that i have removed from the tank) the shop i use was really helpfull and gave me a good telling off as well as i should have taken my fish up to them untill i got the tank correct again (they offer this service FOC) as long as they have tank space, checked the water again this morning and all levels ok, the PH has risen to 7.2 (what it should be), however speaking to a guy from North West Water he tells me that we have very little mineral content in our water and that i should either buy a product or add some broken cockle shells from the beach to help keep the mineral level up........
  22. All is well, it seems that is just the result of what went wrong last month
  23. I have a vision 180 (180ltr) tank, it has been set up for 2 years and all has been well apart from the normal getting the water correct in the first instance, since then the water has been ok with good reading in the PH, KH, Ammonia as well as Nitrate and Nitrite. The tank is filled with Barbs, Tiger, Emerald, Rose and 2 others that i have forgot the name of as well as a knife fish. The fish have all grown from thumb nail size to about 2 inches. Last month all but one of the Tiger Barbs died over a week, a water test showed that amonia levels had risen but not to a massive reading, only 0.25 and PH had dropped away to around 6.0, I carried out a 20% water change and all cleared up, however the PH did take it's time to get back to 7.0, this week i have noticed the plants dying off and before this they have always grown well, infact i have had to cut them back on a few occasions and yesterday a rosie barb died, i have carried out a water test this morning and all reveal perfect readings: Ammonia 0, PH 7.0, Nitrate 0, Nitrite 0, so i am at a loss as to why i am loosing fish and now seem to be loosing plants, would this be a result of the problem in the tank last month or do barbs only have a short life span ? I have some torpedo barbs on order and dont really want to introduce them into the tank if i still have a problem (super expensive) even though the readings we all rely on are showing the water to be good - what am i overlooking ? Ta Chris
