  1. I fish in British waters, well sort of, Channel Islands waters, and found the magazine very readable and interesting, and would certainly welcome reading future issues online as they appear. Not just the kayak fishing world but the whole of the kayaking market is relatively small so Mark is right, I doubt it would be worth someone's while putting a mag together in the UK, at least one which needed plenty of advertising to cover glossy costs etc. But please don't knock it guys, a free read of this quality whether from the US or Oz or whatever is always a fun read and helps to cheer up a deepening European winter. I find it interesting reading how guys from over the pond go about their kayak fishing, and certainly a lot of the articles do have relevance to us as they're about rigging and set ups and so on- things that we do over here just as much. I quite like reading about bigger critters like tarpon or snook rather than cod and chips that we have over here Just my two dollars worth. Oh and its not just cod and chips here either. Last week, just a couple of miles or so off Jersey's West Coast, a long standing local record went as someone caught a 16lb 10oz bass off live sand eel bait. His mate had one in the same session, also over 16lbs but just a little lighter, which had earlier broken the same record. All this in MID DECEMBER :rolleyes:
  2. The yellow polypropylene pipe sounds good; think I can get that from the local gas company where I know someone. Had another even cheaper idea last night, part inspired by a post somewhere deep here about a rack for someone's US pickup truck. Build the timber frame from 4 x 2 tanalised softwood as before, then make cross members from 1 inch or 25mm dowel located in lateral holes in the frame and covered in cut down pool noodles in fancy colours. The kayak should grip the noodle enough to cause the dowel to roll in its holes in the frame; the noodle is kind to the kayak especially the stuff on the upper deck as it rolls onto the frame and everything's cheap and corrosion resistant and for me available locally. Not sure how the dowel will roll once the thing's been out in the weather for a while, that's where a galvanized rod running in a metal sleeve might be better? The good thing about either of these ideas, noodle or polyprop pipe, is that they should allow simple experimentation to see which works best. So off to the shed to knock something up on these lines after Christmas. If it all works, I'll post up some pics showing the result but need to do my homework to find out how to post pics Thanks for help guys and Happy Christmas to all
  3. Thanks guys, so far; certainly food for thought "How about using cut to fit scaffold tubing fitted over a length of steel pipe or something?" Not sure Mike about metal on metal; cheap yup, but doubt whether it will roll easily. Think I prefer the idea of nylon or plastic rollers or anything with a ball race. Really like the sound of conveyor belt type rollers. Sometimes you see them at airport check in points or security checkpoints. Problem is finding them; not many factories here in industry starved Jersey, but will try the freight companies who are regulars on our ferries. Those guys often have neat ways of shifting goods horizontally. Perhaps have a Google on "conveyor belts" next. Another daft suggestion from the female management here: table napkin rings threaded onto a steel bar. Trouble is it's not as daft as I first thought Could be cheap, corrosion proof, quiet and affordable.. Just need to find a store which has about sixty rings in stock!!
  4. I'd like to build a free standing, floor mounted, rack to store two Prowler 13s upside down at home, one above the other, built probably from 4" by 2" framing and ideally with rollers on a pair of lateral bearers. Anyone got ideas on how best to construct the rollers, please? The idea is to save my back by parking close to the rack, taking the boat off the car roof and putting one end of the yak onto the rollers, and letting the rollers then take the strain, so they need to be on a steel core or something strong enough to take a Prowler's weight. Suppose it would be easier to store them upright as they will roll more easily; trouble is then they get full of dirt and rubbish from weeks of rain etc. The dirt takes ages to shift because of the texture of the plastic surface of the yak. My wife helpfully suggested putting fifteen snooker or pool balls on a steel bar Seem to remember seeing only one homemade rack on here before, but could be wrong.
  5. Best looking dogfish I ever saw. Must try bottom fishing next time I go out
  6. SM, the waistcoat and pfd are one and the same! Seriously. Hardy used to make one for reservoir fishing etc which I got several years ago. It's a fabric jacket over or containing an automatic full lifejacket. Gives good wind protection too. There are one or two similar models usually advertised in the game fishing catalogues (eg.Sportfish or Fishtec) Have also worn a Crewsaver lifejacket over a lightweight short trout waistcoat which works OK. Don't think a buoyancy aid thing would work over the waistcoat! . Personally I prefer the lifejacket as I trust it more than a buoyancy aid which is not much use if you hurt your head; it's also far less obtrusive when it's just round your neck. Used to do some guard boating on RIBs for sailing etc, and people weren't allowed offshore on the RIB without a full lifejacket
  7. Hi Somerset. Yep another bean. Well sort of. I'm about as Jersey as Somerset is but i have been here over twenty years. No dawn patrol for me; I was up at a civilised hour on Sunday, enjoying a bacon roll with mates and saw this blue Prowler coming in, with another Prowler on board, and went to say g'day and had a strange conversation something like this, " Mornin mate, you're not part of the AnglersNet Forum are you ?" "yep" " you haven't heard of Prowler have you " etc etc Talk about a coincidence, bumping into someone like that! two total strangers, but both into yakking, the common thread being this thread and catchy names Hope to bump into you soon too perhaps
  8. Hi St Ouen. I use a cheap trout fishereman's waistcoat. it has loads of pockets, all zipped for security. usually I can store up to ten lures in their original plastic boxes, a priest, and lots of dangly things on the outside. there is a large back pocket which usually has a plastyic bag for fish, and two bar towels. that way I can keep all my essential gear for plugging on me rather than having to keep it in a separate bag. it doesn't interfere with paddling provided you don't fill the back pocket with bulky items and have a high backrest. With your name, do you perhaps look out onto the same bay as I do?
  9. Thanks for the help, Newt. Anyone got any advice on how to get up to 15 posts as quick as poss !!! Wonder if it counts if I send this same message another ten times
  10. Sorry to do this on the forum, but I've got no option as I can't pm anybody yet (This is exceptionally frustrating if you are a keen newcomer and want to make contact with some one, legitimately!!) Prowler, thanks for chatting at Greve last Sunday. I was the one in bike leathers admiring your Prowler and mackerel. I've been about to get a P13 and now my wife and son have decided they too want one each. B*gger The roof rack will certainly have some work to do. Any chance of meeting up and possibly trying out a prowler and chatting over kit to get? Dunno if you can pm me!? Also, is there an idiot's guide to how one uses this forum, particularly sending messages and photos, please
  11. Could well be, and would like to meet up. Any ideas on time and place?
  12. Hardly count myself as a Jersey member yet as I only found this site a couple of weeks ago, and , wait for it, only found out about kayak fishing at the end of May! But I'm here and very interested, going through old posts and so on, trying to gen up on what to do and what to avoid. Thinking of getting a Prowler 13, as it seems to be a reasonable first choice. Seem to be several members here in Jersey, so any help and meet ups greatly appreciated. Still trying to work out how to send this; I think I've tried a couple of times so far so apologies if several versions turn up. probably sent this to the wrong place; is there somewhere I'm supposed to post first posts or intros like this one? Put me right guys, and HELP please, I've got this bug BAD {admin note: Until you reach 15 posts, a mod will need to approve each of yours before it shows up and we aren't on the forum all the time. I had all three of your tries waiting on me. Newt}
