  1. hi , thx for the advice going to have to give it a go. As i know it can be a very rewarding bait. Regards James
  2. A whip was designed for fishing to hand which was ideal for speed fishing, you can have a whip elasticated which i would have if i was buying a whip. Never elasticated a whip though. A pole is designed to fish further out than a whip. Poles can come in many different lengths such as 11m, 14.5m, 16m. It is ideal to fish far bank or to an island or snag. Poles have to be elasticated. For most of my canal fishing i use a no 2's/3's for my squatt fishing and no 9's for worm or corn. Also you have to remember to balance your tackle line is the main thing. Whips are cheaper than poles usually. It is really what you want it to do which is the main way to make your decision if you want to fish far out the pole is definatley what you want or if you want to fish to hand then a whip is great especially if your starting fishing. You may find these sites on how to elasticate your pole or whip how to elasticate a pole Also here is something i found off Anglers net in a previous forum on how to elasticate a whip: First buy a bush of a size that your elastic will easily go through; i.e if using a size 6 elastic, then get a bush that will accept a size 10. Very gradually cut the tip back, say 2 inches at a time until the bush will just fit inside the tip. Next, take your whip apart and find a base bung that will fit inside the bottom of the section before the tip, if the sections are short, then try the next section down, ideally you will need to have around six feet of elastic inside the tip. Next, get a diamond eye threader to pull the elastic through the tip and tie with an overhand knot onto the base bung. At the tip end, tie on a stonfo connector with another overhand knot with the elastic under very slight tension. You can now put the tip back through the whip from the base and are ready to fish. It may be that in your first session, you need to trim a little of the elastic to stop the 'droop', just pull out the stonfo and re-tie six inches further back. Regards James
  3. Hi, i am thinking about buying a new pole at the moment i am using a Triana Grandslame 2530 i have had this pole at least 10-15 years old. I am thinking about buying a new 1 because my top kits are worn out nearly (Hopefully they will last me till October/November) I was wondering if anyone has bought the Daiwa Sr4 16m pole & is it great for commercial fishing/ canal fishing. Also is it a very light pole at 14m ? The main question is what do you think about the pole ? Please feel free to reply Regards James
  4. Hey, Thx for the advice i might try it this weekend but on the Shropshire union canal, i know there is definatley a good stock of roach & the stretch is rarely fished. Only if i have time though. I will see what happens. Any more advice/tactics welcome Regards James
  5. Hey, Thanks for the advice, I have tried hemp on some occasions, The odd time i get bites. I have tried tares & it is so much easier to hook, only trouble is that smaller fish dont take it. The Bridgewater canal mainly has roach averaging 2 oz i usually catch, but last night on bread punch i caught a decent roach about 4-6 oz. I am looking to change to a bait instead of the ordinary bait that match anglers usually take like pinkies, squatts & punch, also feed a squatt line as well. Last night i fed about 2- 3 grains of hemp in my swim which helped to keep the roach in my swim i think. I won my match with 3lb 5 oz on squatt & fishing pinkie over the top & Punch which was 2 hours long. There was about 20 minows & only 2 Juniors which was me & another lad (which was a pitty). But i thought to myself i am still competing against them aswell. Would a Kamasan B511 wide gape size 22 hook be ideal for hooking hemp ? Any more advice welcome. Regards James
  6. Thx for your advice. Can any one else give me any more adivice please. Regards James
  7. Hi, i am trying to learn how to hemp fish as i have mastered squatt fishing & bread punch fishing. I know if i get hemp working it will be very rewarding. I fish the Bridgewater canal every Tuesday at GrappenHall. I was wondering about what type of rigs i will need, What diameter line will i need ? Float type 4x10 etc. Also how many grains i should feed at a time & Should it be spreaded out or potted in ? what length should i fish e.g. 11 M etc. Lastly what depth (Over Depth, Dead on the Bottom, Under depth) Any answers welcome. Regards James

  9. Hey, on my seatbox i have an attachment which fits on one of the legs of my box & i simply just slot it through the hole & tighten it up with a screw. I dont use a brolly unless it is raining, I am thinking of buying a bait brolly as my brolley gets in my way when swinging in fish. The Prestons off box brolley arm fits square legs. Also you can get one for round legs as well. Hope this is useful. Regards James
  10. Hi using a plummet is very simple and very useful. They cost about £0.60-£1.00 at the max (Where i live) I would recommend a cork type of plummet or dumbell as clip on plummets your more likely to loose. Also you dont have to stick at that depth. When you have finished plumming up an idea I use if your fishing the pole you can pull your line down to the end of the top 3 and use tip ex to mark up the depth, so if you have to quickly change your rig you can do so, & pull your float back up to the mark. Remember you dont have to stick at that depth, sometimes fishing over depth and slightly up in the water works ( depends on the type of venue). Here is a picture of the type of plummets i recommend: Plummet type Regards James
