  1. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 0715 - 1115 Bright and sunny. 12º-18ºC. River carrying quite a bit of colour (height of the boating season on the K&A ) 5 Barbel - largest 5lb 9oz, smallest 3lb 6oz, 5 Chub - best 2lb, 2 roach, 2 dace. A pleasant morning's trotting - 4 of the barbel came in the last hour from a swim vacated by another angler who had caught nowt on the lead (he was using corn/meat)!
  2. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1830 - 2330 Overcast quite breezy with a couple of very light showers. Min 15ºC. River low. 3 Barbel; 7lb 1oz, 4lb 10oz, 4lb 1oz, 1 Chub 2½lb A pleasant evening by the river - chub caught early in session - all barbel caught after 2200. Ledgered 14mm halibuts - as per usual!
  3. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1830 - 2330 Overcast with a few light showers. 17ºC. River low quite clear and little weed growth (much less than last year) 2 Barbel: 8lb 10oz, 4¼lb First trip of the year to my Barn Owl swim - and was lucky enough to have this graceful bird grant me some fleeting glimpses!! Biggest fish just as it was dark - at around 2230.
  4. River Kennet - Nr Newbury 1830 - 2300 Clear and frosty. AT 5º -> 0ºC. WT 49ºF. River up a couple of inches - with little debris. 1 Barbel 5lb 8oz, 1 Chub 3lb 3oz. Chilly evening, though fishing under the tree kept the frost off. Chub 1st cast, Barbel at 2100.
  5. River Kennet - Thatcham 1300 - 1500 Bright and Breezy. 17ºC. River at normal levels carrying some debris. 2 Barbel (5lb 2oz, 3lb 4oz), 10 Chub - all between 10oz - 1¾lb, 1 Brown Trout 1lb 10oz. Cracking little trotting session. All fish on double red maggot.
  6. River Kennet - Newbury 1815 - 2315 Overcast and mild - 13ºC. WT 53ºF. River up an inch or so and with a bit more colour after Sunday's rain. No debris. 2 Barbel (6lb 4oz, 3lb 13oz), 1 Chub (2¼lb) Fished the frying pan swim again. First bite at 2015. An evening more notable for the wildlife commuting through my swim. A mink - in the water, several large rats in the margins (being hunted by the mink???) and a badger on the bank!
  7. River Kennet, Nr Thatcham 1830 - 2300 Cool and breezey evening 12ºC (but felt colder!) River low and carrying quite a bit of leaf litter and floating weed - made bait presentation difficult. 2 Barbel (4lb14oz, 4lb 3oz) Same venue - though different swim to 2 weeks ago (15 Sep) with remarkably similar results! Again both fish caught by 2000.
  8. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1845 - 2315 Cool and clear - high hazy cloud. Full moon. 15º -> 10ºC (But felt chillier with a very heavy dew!). River lower than I expected after the heavy rain last Friday. 2 Barbel (4lb 10oz, 4lb 7oz) A return to the hotspot I discovered last autumn (see last seasons enteries for 29 Sep, 1 Oct & 15 Oct) - though not so much joy this time! Both fish at dusk - either side of 2000.
  9. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 0930 - 1230 Overcast, 15ºC. River at 'normal' levels - carrying some colour after the recent heavy rains. 3 Barbel (6lb 13oz, 4lb 5oz, 3lb 11oz), 3 Chub (3lb 4oz, 2lb & a chublet) Great session on trotted maggot - (and I also bumped a couple). Fed swim for ¾hr, then had all the fish in a little over an hour - no bites after 1130.
  10. River Kennet - Nr Newbury 0600 - 1000 Bright and sunny under a cloudless sky (makes a change!) 8º ->15ºC. River at normal levels - a couple of inches down on a week ago. 2 barbel (1lb 7oz, 1lb3oz), 1 Chub (2lb), 4 doz Dace, 1 doz Roach, 4 Grayling, 4 Gudgeon, 1 Salmon Parr. A morning's trotting - alledgedly for chub - and although I bumped a couple they weren't in a feeding mood - though a couple of baby barbel from the fast shallows were fun! All fish on trotted mag.
  11. River Kennet - Nr Newbury 1900 - 0000 Windy - with frequent heavy showers for first couple of hours. Clearing to broken cloud and a (near) full moon. 15ºC. River carrying some colour after recent rain - no debris though. 3 Barbel (7lb7oz, 5lb 0oz, 3¾lb), 1 Chub (2¾lb), 1 Dace (on a 14mm Pellet hair-rigged to a size 8!!!) Most fish caught during 1st couple of hours (Biggest barbel during the heaviest downpour - so got rather wet!). Only one fish after 2100 - smallest barbel at around 2245.
  12. River Kennet - nr Thatcham 0700 - 1100 Sultry 17º - 21ºC. River in good flow with more ranunculus than I've seen on this stretch for 5+ years... 2 Barbel, 3lb14oz, 1lb 1oz (!), 1 chub 1½lb & 6 chublets, 1½ doz dace, 5 roach, 3 gudgeon. Trotting session - all fish on single red maggot.

    2 July

River Kennet nr Newbury 1830 - 2315 Dry, following afternoon rain - clearing skies 19ºC -> 12ºC (but felt cooler in the heavy dew!) River in good flow with some colour and debris free until the Canada Geese started feeding just upstream!! 3 Barbel (8lb 11oz, 5lb 14oz, 4¼lb), 2 Chub (5lb 1oz & 3lb 13oz). Bigger chub 1st cast, biggest barbel 2nd cast! 2 smallest fish in last ½hr. 5lb chub - very lank and spawned out - will be MUCH bigger in the winter! All fish on pellet.
  14. River Kennet - Newbury 0700 - 1130 Dull & overcast with some breeze. AT 42ºF -> 52ºF. WT 46ºF - river at 'normal' winter levels. Little colour. 10 chub - 5lb 5oz, 4lb 10oz, 4lb 6oz, 4lb 4oz, 4lb 3oz, 3lb 14oz, 3½lb, 3lb, 2lb & a chublet! 1 Barbel 2¼lb, 6 dace, 2 brownies & 1 grayling. Back to the swim that produced so spectacularly back in December. (See entry for 15 December). All fish on trotted double red maggot. Many/most fish caught on the fast shallows at the tail of the swim. Chub were in superb condition, fat as pigs and absolutely mint - every one.
  15. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1830 - 2330 Clear and still. AT 54ºF --->45ºF, WT 52ºF. River low - another couple of inches down on 3 weeks ago and carrying quite a bit of debris - mainly ranunculus. 2 Barbel (8¼lb , 4lb) River needs some rain!!! Both fish in the 1st couple of hours (again!) then the signals moved in (never a good sign). Floating debris quite annoying. Lovely clear night - good for firework spotting - also saw a few meteors (Taurids?).
  16. River Kennet - Newbury 0730 - 1230 Cold and frosty. River clear with some leaf litter. WT - 47ºF (That's down 8ºF since Monday). 5 Chub (2-3lb, biggest 3lb 11oz), 3 barbel (all 2-3lb) 4 doz Dace, Gudgeon, Roach (mainly Dace). A morning trotting maggot or worm - very surprised to get the barbel considering the drop in WT. All chub and barbel caught after 1030 having spent 3 hours dribbling in maggot (and catching nowt but dace). Small but great fun on float rod and CP. All barbel caught on worm most chub on double red maggot.
  17. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1900 - 2315 Mild and breezy, air temp rose 1ºC to 14ºC. WT 13ºC. River down 3-4 inches on a fortnight ago - considerably less weed coming down too, dark when I arrived so couldn't gauge clarity. 10 - yes 10 barbel. 10.05 (thats 3 doubles in 3 trips!), 8.10, 8.02, 7.08, 5.07, 5.00, 4.14, 3 unweighed around the 4lb mark. Another stonking evening on the Kennet! Fished my ' new' swim last night (hereinafter called 'Doubles' or 'Broken Rod' - see below). Would have stayed a bit longer but had to be up at 0500 this morning to go to Bradford. Also managed to bust another rod!! Not as catastrophic as last time thankfully - tip ring snapped off my carp rod fighting the double - they fight bloody hard in the fast current! Managed to bodge a repair on the bank and caught 3 more including the 8.10. All fish on 14mm halibuts.
  18. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1830 - 2200 Overcast, drizzle 'in the wind' temp a constant 13ºC 7 barbel 11lb 6oz, 7lb 3oz, 6lb 10oz, 6lb 4oz, 6lb 3oz, 5lb 13oz, 4½lb An eventful evening at the swim I 'discovered' on Saturday. River carrying more colour than at the weekend. Couldn't even fish for the first hour due to swans feeding just upstream sending down a constant barrage of floating ranunculus. Once I started fishing bites came thick and fast. Only downside is that while fighting the 11lber a HUGE clump of ranunculus got wrapped around my line (more floating debris) - took me ages to bring the whole lot up against the current and just as I brought the whole 'kit and caboodle' to the net my rod snapped. :-( Only one I'd brought with me so had to pack up 2 hours before I'd intended too - shame as I reckon I'd have hit double figures at the rate I was catching!!!! Also had time to extricate a bat which managed to get itself tangled up in my line. Quite an evening!!!!!
  19. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 0700 - 1200 Heavy drizzle for first couple of hours then dry and murky. 13º -> 15º 1 Barbel 10lb 2oz, 11 trout (3 X 1lb+), 10 dace. This was meant to be just a trotting session but it was so wet on arrival, I set the brolly up and lowered a ledgered pellet under the near bank. Things got off to an auspicious start (NOT) with a cormorant surfacing in my swim followed by it's mate. Then a family of swans thought it would be a good place to have a ruck - think daddy swan was trying to persuade the kids to leave home. Loads of ranunuculus coming down the river as well (I blame the swans for that too!). I was just starting to feel sorry for myself - and having one of those 'I'll be glad when I've had enough of this' thoughts when the rod was wrenched from my grasp. Really nice coloured fish which put up a decent scrap in the fast current - I felt somewhat guilty as I guided it into the net. Eventually rain abated and I was able to wade out and do some trotting. All the trout were caught before I had a dace. Dace were a really nice size so worth the wait!
  20. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1845 - 2315 Clear and breezey. 18ºC----->9ºC. No moon - really dark night! 3 Barbel; 5lb 0oz, 2 sub 4lbers. River down 3 inches on last visit, still carrying some debris - mainly ranunculus - which frustratingly kept catching the line. 2 smaller fish around 2100, 5lber last cast.
  21. River Kennet - Thatcham 1930-2330 Clearing skies - cooler 12ºC. 2 Barbel (4¼lb, 6lb 13oz) Both fish caught either side of 2100. Levels same as 7 days ago - however an annoying amount of debris - ranunculus and water cress coming down made fishing difficult at times - maybe some weed cutting's been going on upstream? Much less activity than last week - no other bites/knocks/rattles etc other than the 2 which resulted in fish. Chilly in a NE breeze too!
  22. River Kennet (Nr Thatcham) 1915 - 2315 Scattered cloud, 18ºC, one light shower. 4 Barbel (9lb10z, 6lb 5oz, 5lb 6oz, 4lb). 1 Chub (2lb) First trip since holidaying in Scotland (Caught a few Pollack spinning from the rocks nr Oban). 3 fish (Chub, 6 & 4lber) in the first ½hour then lots of knocks/rattles which didn't develop (not crayfish) - presumably small chub/dace/gudgeon??? Final two fish at 2215 and 2250 - saved the biggest for last. 9lber had a large (size of 10p) wart on head (above left eye) - but otherwise looked in fine condition - very plump - should be easy to ID in future. River still high (for summer) and pushing through strongly though most of the colour had dropped out and no debris coming down. Saw a couple of really bright Perseids - lovely!
  23. River Kennet (nr Newbury) 2000 - 2300 Clear. 2 Barbel (6lb 4oz & 5lb 14oz), 1 Bream (3¾lb) 1 dace (9oz) New swim - all fish to 14mm pellet - including the rather overambitious dace. Barbel between 22-2300 - as per usual! River at normal levels - down about 3-4 inches on 10 days ago - carrying its usual summer colour (boat traffic has a lot to answer for) - and some - just enough to be annoying - debris.
  24. Chris Plumb

    6 July

River Kennet (nr Thatcham) 2000 - 0000 Clear with a stiff breeze. 4 Barbel (9lb 7oz, 8lb 15oz, 6lb 2oz, 3½lb) 1 Chub 3lb 3oz All on pellet (of course!) Chub caught in the 1st 20 mins of arriving - all the barbel caught in 1 manic hour between 10-11.00pm. River down 2-3inches on last week.
  25. River Kennet (Newbury) 1900 - 2300 Dry, windy and overcast. 2 Barbel (8lb6oz,<4lb) 2 chub (both <3lb) River up, some colour and quite a bit of debris (mainly weed) coming down. 1 chub 1st cast then 3 fish in the last ½hour. All fish on 14mm Halibuts.
