  1. Had a couple of hours to fish until sunset this afternoon. Blue sky, glorious early spring feel, but high air pressure and chilly later on. The canal is maybe 30ft wide and 3.5 ft deep in the centre. No boat traffic. Slow flow. Tackle: Waggler float -slightly heavier than I thought when I tackled up - shotted 'shirt button style' (4BBs, 3 no6's), 4lb mainline, 2lb hook length, size 18 hook. Tactics: Fished mainly central channel to two thirds across. Mixed up fishing overdepth, just above the bottom (as determined by float not dragging) and up to 2.5ft deep. Bait: Maggots. started with two reds, then two whites, one of each, one plus a caster, single red then single white. Feed: 6-10 maggies loose fed every 3 or 4 minutes so as not to overfeed. Target species: Roach/perch/the occasional brownie. Result: Overfeed what?! Zip. Not a bite. No bubbles or other sign of fish life. Would have been delighted with a single gudgeon or a bleak - I know they're in there! Was I doing anything horribly wrong? All thoughts welcomed.
  2. River Kennet - Padworth 1800 - 2200 Cool and clear (down to 5ºC when I packed up - but came better prepared this time!) Blanked Not enough daylight for a blank saving trotting session so it was straight out with the ledgering rods for 4 hours at staring at static isotopes. Again no crayfish activity and YET AGAIN saw an otter come through just after setting up. Also had a barn owl swoop between the trees not far above my head!

River Kennet, Nr Thatcham 1930 - 2315 Cool, overcast some light drizzle at times - more like October than mid-July! Blanked!! Cue another Rusty faux headline!!! Shocked on 2 counts when I arrived. The first was not being able to even get in the car park - full of anglers cars. And the second was the state of the river - really coloured up and tanking through - more like mid-winter condition. I did consider turning around and going elsewhere - a thought that stayed with me all evening as I looked at a stationary quiver tip. No bites, not even a hint of one - or even a crayfish - in fact didn't even need to change my hair-rigged pellet for the entire time I was on the bank...
  4. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1830 - 2315 Mild (min of 16ºC), overcast and very, very breezy! Levels on the low side and quite clear. Blanked! (Well nothing with fins - was totally crayfished out!) Tried another new swim but was into the Signals almost as soon as the bait hit the water. Activity stopped for an hour at around 10pm so was hopeful that fish had moved in - but nothing doing!

NAA Still Water - Thatcham 0430 - 0815 Overcast and mild. AT 63ºF at 0430. WT 73ºF Blanked! And blanked in some style too!! This is the 'easiest' water in the NAA portfolio - the one where they hold junior fish-ins. And yet for nearly 4 hours I couldn't buy a bite - despite fishing a single red maggot for most of that time - suicidal tactics usually if you wanted to avoid being plagued by small stuff. Paul did at least manage a couple of bites resulting in a carp & a crucian - and despite poaching in his swim for that last couple of hours no more bites came. I suspect the high WT and possibly low DO levels may be to blame!
  6. River Kennet - Thatcham 1900 - 0000 Warm, overcast and breezy. 17ºC (even at Midnight!) River at normal levels. Blanked Lovely balmy evening to be by the river amongst the bats (the air was thick with them!!! ) Very frustrating swim this!! On my 1st ever visit in July 2004 I had 3 fish from it; 7+ Carp, 8+ barbel and my PB barbel of 12.04. Went back a fortnight later and had a 7+ barbel. Thought at the time I'd found a great little hotspot. However I returned twice more that season, 3 times in 2005, twice in 2006 and last night (didn't fish it in 2007) and none of these subsequent sessions have produced so much as a bite!
  7. Pumphouse Lake, Yateley 1800 - 2300 Cloudy then rain. Blanked! Friday the 13th - pah! 10 rod hours without a touch. Pellet on the lead on 1 rod, float fishing the margins with a variety of baits on the other - couldn't even buy a bite with maggot or worm. Packed up early when the wind picked up and it started to rain - heavily! - I hadn't brought my shelter - the weather forecast having predicted a dry warm night! Glad the rain made my mind up for me - Paul fished on 'til 1st light - without success!
