  1. River Kennet - Newbury (Whitehouse) 1330 1500 Mild overcast and breezy. AT 12ºC. River very pacey but surprisingly clear given all the rain yesterday. 1 Bream : 2lb. 3 Perch, 1 Roach (all small). Having fished down the Lambourn twice, a quick bite of lunch was followed by a 90 min session in my new favourite chub slack. Alas, ole rubber lips wasn't in residence - a bream taking my bait at just the spot I expected a chub to be!
  2. River Kennet - Hambridge 1230 - 1430 Mainly overcast, quite breezy with a couple of lumpy showers. AT 13ºC. River up over a foot on my last visit and the colour of 'builder's tea'! 1 Chub 3lb 5oz. 1 Bream 3lb 2oz. 3 Roach - all small. 1 Gudgeon. Fished my 'banker' flood water swim - but even I was surprised I caught. River was really coloured up after Storm Ciarán had dumped an inch and a half of rain on West Berkshire in the past 24 hours - and didn't look at all promising. However a gudgeon first cast grew some confidence and the chub came along shortly after. Bites were still at a premium though so with no action for nearly an hour after the bream and with darkening skies, I decided to quit while I was ahead!
  3. Middle Kennet carrier - Marsh Benham 0930 - 1400 Sunny spells after another night of heavy rain. Mild/warm for the time of year. AT 12º-17ºC. River up several inches and carrying quite a bit of colour - which had noticeably dropped out somewhat by the time I packed up. 4 Chub; 4lb 13oz & 3 chublets. 1 Bream: 2lb 11oz. 3 Perch: 1½lb and a couple of tiddlers. 16 Roach - nothing noteworthy. 3 Dace (ditto). 1 Brownie -3lb. Despite spending a lot of time and effort on the main river - nearly all fish from the carrier. Trotted corn was largely ignored and I didn't start to catch until I switched back to maggot - and wandered upstream- abandoning the weirpool, to find some quieter water. Biggest chub of the season(so far!) from here...
  4. Middle Kennet (& Carrier) - Marsh Benham 0700 - 1400 Bright and sunny after overnight rain. AT 14º-16ºC. River at normal levels with a tinge of colour. 12 Chub; 6 over a lb - best 3lb 6oz, and half a doz chublets. 8 Perch; 1lb 12oz & 7 small-uns. 1 Bream 2lb 2oz. 30 Roach & Dace (more roach), 'a' roach of 12oz the only noteworthy fish. 1 Bleak. 1 Rainbow - unwelcome as ever but a real lump @5lb 10oz. All out attempt at trying to snaffle some bigger chub and avoid the smaller fish (at least initially) so it was out with the trotted red sweetcorn for the first time this autumn. Seemed to work - though i would have liked something a little bigger. First 2 fish on corn were actually the bigger perch and the bream. The only noteworthy roach also snaffled my sweetcorn offering. I caught a pike on sweetcorn from this venue a couple of seasons ago - seems like the predators are going vegan! Most fish from the main river. Vegan Perch
  5. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1730 - 2230 Bright and breezy. AT 20º - 15ºC. 4 Bream: 4lb 8oz, 4lb 5oz, 4lb 2oz, 3lb 10oz. 4 Tench: 4lb 3oz, 3lb 3oz X2(different fish I think!), 2lb 11oz. 2 Carp: unweighed but both around 1½lb. 6 Perch; - most around 6-8oz. 2 Rudd. A very busy evening with bites and fish from the off - smallest Bream was actually first cast!. Bites tailed off after dark - only one fish after 9pm - exact opposite of what usually happens. All fish on float fished prawn (of course!). Annoyingly I also got smashed 3 times by the lake's rogue (they were never meant to be stocked in here) carp - the third time after scaling up to a 6lb bottom - which was still snapped like cotton! Still - one of my best returns on this lake - good thing I remembered my stink bag for my net and mat!
  6. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Warm and overcast with a stiffish breeze for the most part - which kept the mozzies at bay. AT 21ºC - 18ºC 4 Tench; 3lb 11oz, 3lb 2oz, 3lb, 2lb 13oz (all 3 smaller ones feisty hard fighting males). 2 Bream; 4lb 11oz & 4lb 8oz. 2 Perch, 2 Roach (all small) Well that was an entertaining evening! All the action between 8pm and 10pm - no bites at all before or after. I started off (as I usually do) alternating between chopped prawn and maggot on the hook - but when the bites arrived maggot just resulted in perch or roach so quickly reverted to a prawn only approach for the rest of the evening. I don't catch many bream on prawn so the two fish I caught will increase my confidence as a bait for them! First blackberries of the summer also collected. Note to self - remember to bring stink bag for my net when I expect/hope to catch bream or tench!
  7. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Fresher than recent days and cooler. Quite breezy.AT 21º-15ºC. 1 Bream: 4lb 14oz. 1 Tench; 1½lb. 1 Rudd - a netter of around 8-10oz, 1 Roach - small. 5 Perch - handsized. Alders campaign gets off to a sluggish start - though it started promisingly with the nice rudd first cast. Dusk brought quivering lilies and raised expectations - fulfilled with the tench a little after 2200. The bream arrived an hour later just as I was packing up - resulting in a very wet and slimy net in the car home!
  8. River Kennet - Marsh Benham 0430 - 1200 Warm and sunny. AT 13º -> 26ºC. River in good nick, nice depth and flow - still benefiting from a wet winter and early spring. 3 Bream: 5lb 2oz, 3lb 0oz, 2lb 11oz. 2 Chub 2lb 13oz and a 'pounder'. 6 Dace - 2 gooduns that needed the net, 1 Roach - small. 1 Brownie - 2lber and 1 Rainbow - around 4lb. For the second year running my season opens with some nice river bream - the 5lber my biggest from here. Started in the weir-pool but struggled somewhat - with the only fish putting a significant bend in the rod having adipose fins. All bream and chub coming from the swims above the railway bridge.
  9. River Kennet - Hambridge 0900 - 1300 Cool & cloudy. AT 2º-5ºC. River still very high and clear - down a couple of inches on last weekend but not dropped as much as I'd expected after a dry week. 1 Chub; 3lb 7oz, 1 Bream; 2lb 3oz. 2 Grayling. Scratchy morning in my favourite flood swim with bites at a premium. Bream and grayling in the first ¾hr. Chub first cast after resting the swim for nearly an hour, while I had a leisurely lunch on the bank. Had planned to venture over to Speen this morning but didn't fancy battling with the chaos that is Newbury traffic at the moment - one of the main E-W routes is closed because of a gas leak!
  10. River Kennet (and Carrier), Marsh Benham 1015 - 1500 Mild and overcast morning, with a torrential downpour at lunchtime giving way to bright sunshine - 4 (well 3) seasons in one day! AT 11º - 13ºC. River still very low. West Berks has had 116.6mm (over 4½inches in old money!) of rain in the past 2½ weeks - since 20 October - the prayers for a wet autumn are being answered - yet very little is making its way into the water course. Hopefully though the aquifers are being topped up and the Kennet will see the benefit of all this rain in January! 1 Bream; 4lb 2oz, 3 Chub; 1¾lb and a couple of chublets, 2 Doz Roach and Dace - in roughly equal nos - slightly more roach. Nothing particularly noteworth apart from one of the dace of around 8oz and a couple of the roach around the same mark. 3 Perch; all small. 3 Brownies; between 2½ - 3½lb - biggest of which had a fresh size 16 in its scissors - one of your's Martin? I've been umming and ahhing all weekend about which day to go fishing scrutinising the weather almost every hour. Had decided on a rare Monday trip - but decided to make the most of a window in the rain. Thankfully had stopped for my lunch when the heavy shower came - other wise a dry day! Usual roving tactics and usual pesky trout showing up in my more reliable chub swims!
  11. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Calm and cloudy to start with clearing skies and dropping temps for the last hour (and a very heavy dew!) AT 17º -> 11ºC (But felt much chillier in the damp conditions...) 1 Bream 5lb 2oz, 1 Tench 1¼lb, 1 Rudd; 11oz (looked bigger!), 1 Roach - hand-sized. 6 Perch all smallish. Nearly all the excitement in the first 90 mins with the tinca pretty much first cast. The only fish to come after it got dark was the lovely rudd and the roach. Had intended to stay longer but I started catching signals and the cool, damp air was starting to chill my bones (time to dig out those thermal trousers) A complete contrast to the start of the evening!
  12. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1930 - 2300 Warm with high broken cloud - affording a super view of the Super 'Buck' Moon when it got dark. AT 25º -> 17ºC. 2 Bream: both 3lbers but not by much. 1 Tench 1¼lb. 2 Perch: small An evening with a slow start and a livelier finish! I nearly packed up after an hour or so as I was being totally plagued by crayfish and whilst they did a quick disappearing act - usually a good sign that something that would find a signal a tasty snack has appeared on the scene - by the time 10.00pm rolled around I just had the 2 modest perch to show for my perserverance. Thankfully the ever increasing gloom brought some action from my target species - 2 bream, 5 minutes apart were topped off by a last cast tinca turning a poor evening into a par one!
  13. River Kennet - Marsh Benham 0415 - 1145 Hot, sunny and sultry. 26ºC when I packed up but thankful for the fleece I put in my tackle bag at the last minute, when I arrived at first light! River low and clear. 2 Bream; 4lb 7oz, 4lb 4oz. 6 Chub; a couple of 2lbers with the rest all between ½-1lb. 3 Doz Dace & Roach (roughly 2 dace for every roach) nothing very big though a couple of the dace were half decent. 3 Bleak. 2 Brownies - both over 3lb with spectacular markings. Glorious morning - on my favourite weirpool - which is thankfully in shade for all of the morning. Both bream had me convinced I was into decent chub - they fight soooo much harder than their still water cousins (and are a lot less slimey!!!). Was hopeful of finding some bigger chub though I think they may have been spawning in the shallows below the weirpool (something certainly was!).
  14. River Kennet (& carrier) - Marsh Benham 0900 - 1400 VERY mild (14ºC) and cloudy morning - brightening up for last couple of hours. River still on the low side but up a couple of inches on 3 weeks ago and carrying a bit of colour. 4 Chub: 4lb 1oz, 2lb 2oz and a couple of chublets - one of around a pound the other half that. 1 Bream; 5lb 2oz. 40+ Roach and Dace - mainly roach in an approx ratio of 2-1. Nothing particularly newsworthy - though they weren't tiddlers either - a couple of the dace were over ½lb. 2 Bleak. 2 Brownies - both 2lb+. 1 Rainbow - unweighed but close to 4lb. A morning on my syndicate stretch - as I reasoned that all the Christmas rain - and the springs bursting on the downs might have wakened the river up! And so it proved - the first 3 fish were the 2 bigger chub and the bream before - alas - the trout turned up to wreck things! Spent a couple of hours on the carrier which produced the 2 smaller chub and most of the roach and dace. My biggest bream from here.
  15. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Calm, clear evening - affording excellent views of Jupiter, Saturn & a very bright half moon. Temps dropped rapidly when the sun went down - resulting in a very heavy dew. 2 Tenck; 2lb 13oz and a 'pounder'. 1 Bream; 4lb 2oz. 2 Roach; both 'netters' and whilst unweighed would both have made ½lb easily. 15 Perch; various sizes from micro to a couple that were half decent and in need of the net. Plagued with perch for the first hour - but thankfully as light levels dropped so did bites from the stripeys - allowing other species to get a look in. Was smashed twice by big carp which was a bit of a pain for a short session - especially after playing one for a considerable time and just starting to harbour thoughts that I might actually land it - before it decided it had other ideas (maybe IT was playing me!). Roach were a nice surprise - and last 2 fish caught - well into the dark.
  16. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Cloudy with a fresh NEly breeze. AT 15/14ºC but felt considerably chillier in the wind. 2 Bream: 5lb 7oz & 2lb 15oz. 2 Tench: 2lb 10oz & a 1lber. 3 Carp: All well over a lb - in fact the one I weighed was over 1½lb (all rehomed in Willows). 10 Perch: most in the 6-8oz class. 1 Rudd: handsized. Busy evening with most of the fish coming in the first 90 mins. Only 2 bites after 8pm - but both resulted in a bream on the bank. My biggest this season - but, alas, last fish caught so net and unhooking mat went home covered in an inordinate amount of slime!
  17. River Kennet - Marsh Benham 0630 - 1230 Torrential rain for first 90 mins or so followed by showers (some quite lumpy!). Cool for August (13ºC) and quite breezy - sun eventually appeared for the last hour or so. 2 Chub: 3lb 13oz & a smallun. 1 Bream; 3lb 14oz. 4 Doz Roach & Dace (mainly roach - nothing of any size). 3 Bleak. 1 Rainbow Trout - 3½lb. I read 3 weather forecasts on Friday evening and whilst all predicted a showery weekend they all also said that Sunday would be the drier day. PAH! Didn't get a drop of rain yesterday morning - first shower appeared at lunchtime - and yet this morning it was like sitting through a monsoon. Thankfully I'd just about got set up before the heavens opened and quickly abandoned my trotting for a couple of hours sitting under a brolly, ledgering meat - and almost thankful that I didn't get a bite! Eventually the rains abated enough to resume running a float through various swims. Was hoping for a few more chub - though the bream was a nice bonus and didn't half put up a scrap in the fast current! Also harvested my first blackberries of the summer!
  18. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2300 Warm, sunny evening with a gentle breeze for much of it - which kept the mossies off for all but the last hour. 25ºC when I arrived - still 17ºC when I packed up. 3 Bream: 4lb 4oz, 3lb 14oz, 3lb 11oz. 1 Tench 3lb 13oz. 3 Carp; all ¾-1lb. 3 Perch - all 6-8oz. Productive evening which got off to a slow start. And whilst I had a perch first cast I'd have to wait 2 hours for my next bite. All the fish then came in a 90min spell around dusk. Again the little carp fought well above their weight - kidding me into thinking I was into tincas. (All were re-homed next door). After 2200 I was plagued with strange bites - which proved to be signal crayfish (I even landed one of the blighters) - damn nuisance as they were on the bait as soon as it touched bottom - so whilst I had intended to fish till midnight - they prompted an 'early' pack up!
  19. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1745 - 2215 Overcast, quite breezy at times and the AT actually went up a degree from 15-16ºC 1 Bream; 4lb 14oz. 1 Tench - c1lb. 2 Perch - both 'half decent' around 8-10oz. 3 Rudd. Bites a-plenty for the first couple of hours (though I think a lot of them were rudd attacking the shot) - went very quiet as it got dark - exact opposite to what usually happens. Only bite after 2000 was the bream - which was very much a last cast fish - and meant I had a very slimy net to put in the car! Surprised at the size of the perch - though I shouldn't be with all the prey fish available - might be a worthy target species from here in a year or two....
  20. Middle Kennet Weirpool - Marsh Benham 0600 - 1200 Hot and sultry - 19º -> 27ºC. River a little on the low side but not as bad as it can be in August! 12 Chub: 6 over lb, best 2 both went 4lb 3oz (different fish) - nice to see some small ones. 3 Bream; 2¾ to just under 4lb. 30 Dace. 20+ Roach. 4 Bleak. 1 Brown Trout - 6lb 1oz (!!) & 2 Rainbows of 2½ & 3½lbs. Cracking morning's trotting - though the big brownie was on ledgered meat and had me convinced I was into a barbel for a few minutes! Don't usually take pics of troot - usually try to avoid them - but this was one impressive spottie. And Rusty will be pleased to see I've done some 'gardening'... Bream pic (makes a change from Chub), this was the biggest - all 3 fought surprisingly hard in the flow!
  21. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2315 Overcast and warm(ish). AT 15ºC when I packed up. 1 Bream; 5lb 10oz. 2 Tench: 2lb 15oz and a smallun. 1 Crucian - small - handsized - but a very welcome sight. 4 small Rudd. First time in a few seasons I've had tench AND bream in the same session from here - the bream was very much a last cast fish - was starting to pack my stuff away when I noticed my float dithering around and I assumed it was another crucian or even a crayfish - so very pleased to lift into a lumpy bream - my biggest (by a few ounces) from here. Crucian was a real bonus - clearly one that was stocked last winter - hope they can stick around and put on some weight!
  22. Dobsons Lake - Widmead 1500 - 0600 Mainly overcast with drizzly showers - Cool 12-15ºC. 2 Carp; 10lb 10oz & 6lb 3oz. 1 Bream; 5lb 6oz. 6 Perch. 1 Roach. Slow, slow night, punctuated on the stroke of 1am by a rather nice common - the only time my bite alarm indicated a fish in the whole session. All the other fish fell to float fished maggot on the marginal shelf (I was hoping to connect with some of the tench that had been showing recently!) Of course I wasn't even meant to be here today - this was the day pencilled in for the 5th Paul Goulbourn charity fish-in at Marsh Farm - which has had to be postponed due to Covid 19 - hopefully the re-arranged date in August will still happen! Ignore date on camera for carp pic - it's still on GMT!
  23. Marsh Farm 0730 - 1930 Sunny, becoming cloudy and breezy. Temp 10ºC -> 20º -> 16ºC. 5 Crucians (1lb 13oz, 1lb 10oz, 1lb 8oz, 2<1lb), 4 Tench (1½lb - 4lb 11oz), 3 Bream (1½ - 2½lb), 2 Roach (best 1lb 2oz), 2 Perch, a dozen+ Rudd. Started on Harris and struggled all morning for bites (even using maggot) though did manage the bigger of the crucians from here. Paul started on Richardsons and faired much better so I joined him in the afternoon - just to see my float move occasionally! Most fish on 6mm S-Pellet, float fished TIGHT to the margins - lift method.

    26 May

Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2230 Warm, slightly overcast evening with little breeze - still 17ºC when I left. 3 Bream - all of a similar stamp between 2¾ - 3½lb. Beginning to make a habit of this!! Bites at a premium - not a touch for the first 2 hours or so then all three fish between 8.30 - 9.30pm as a shoal of bream obviously got their heads down over some groundbait. Quite a few fish topping as it got dark but no more action. Stayed for another biteless hour hoping for a tench or 2 to show up...
  25. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0645 - 1045 Cool and bright. Ice on the car for the first time this autumn - temps down to 1ºC overnight (in our greenhouse)! River low and clear. 1 Chub; 2lb 14oz. 2 Perch (one circa 1lb), 1 Bream 1lb 1oz. 3 Dace & 5 Gudgeon. First trip here of the season so did as much walking as fishing. Did want to have an hour before the sun rose in a favoured perch swim - which is not proving as reliable as it once was and the only time my lobs were bothered it was by the signals. Once the sun was up it was always going to be a struggle in such low water. Chub and bream were from a 'new' swim - certainly not one I've ever fished before - and one which looks like it might be quite good with a bit more water in the river!
