  1. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Calm, clear evening - affording excellent views of Jupiter, Saturn & a very bright half moon. Temps dropped rapidly when the sun went down - resulting in a very heavy dew. 2 Tenck; 2lb 13oz and a 'pounder'. 1 Bream; 4lb 2oz. 2 Roach; both 'netters' and whilst unweighed would both have made ½lb easily. 15 Perch; various sizes from micro to a couple that were half decent and in need of the net. Plagued with perch for the first hour - but thankfully as light levels dropped so did bites from the stripeys - allowing other species to get a look in. Was smashed twice by big carp which was a bit of a pain for a short session - especially after playing one for a considerable time and just starting to harbour thoughts that I might actually land it - before it decided it had other ideas (maybe IT was playing me!). Roach were a nice surprise - and last 2 fish caught - well into the dark.
  2. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Cloudy with a fresh NEly breeze. AT 15/14ºC but felt considerably chillier in the wind. 2 Bream: 5lb 7oz & 2lb 15oz. 2 Tench: 2lb 10oz & a 1lber. 3 Carp: All well over a lb - in fact the one I weighed was over 1½lb (all rehomed in Willows). 10 Perch: most in the 6-8oz class. 1 Rudd: handsized. Busy evening with most of the fish coming in the first 90 mins. Only 2 bites after 8pm - but both resulted in a bream on the bank. My biggest this season - but, alas, last fish caught so net and unhooking mat went home covered in an inordinate amount of slime!
  3. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2230 Warm, clear evening with a gentle southerly breeze wafting the aromas of Paul Newman's salad dressing from the factory at Greenham - but not strong enough to keep the mossies at bay! 3 Tench; 3lb 4oz, 2lb 11oz, 2lb 5oz. 2 Roach & a Perch - all handsized. Slightly sub par return by recent standards - waited 2 hours for a bite then all the fish, bar the smallest tench, came in a flurry between 8.30 and 9.00pm. By 10.30pm the crayfish had moved in so it was time for me to move out despite planning to stay longer...
  4. Harris Lake, Marsh Farm - Milford 1600 - 0000 Cool (for late July!), 17ºC - 15ºC, very breezy (thanks to storm Evert) with a couple of brief flurries of rain - though precipitation had been much heavier prior to arrival. 23 (!!!?!!!) Crucians: 18 over 2lb (the other 5 all around 1¾lb - I had 2 @1-14). Best 5 went, 3lb 2oz, 2lb 15oz, 2lb 14oz, 2lb 12oz & 2lb 11oz. 7 Tench: best 4lb 2oz - the others all 2-3lbers. 1 Perch: unweighed but needed the net and easily ½lb. 2 Rudd (micro sized - both caught on a bare hook as I adjusted the shotting on my float at the start of the session!) WOW! Feast or Famine. I couldn't buy a bite here 6 weeks ago - and yet today caught nearly double the number of big crucians than I caught in the whole of last season - in fact looking back through my diaries I can't see a better return in the 15 years I've been coming to this venue. And to add to the fun they were all caught on the float - pretty much under my rod tip. Had planned for this to be a bit of an overnighter but by 9.00pm I already had 20 to my name (including all the bigger ones) and bites then actually tailed off a bit as it got dark - complete opposite to what nearly always happens here. Really frenetic evening - took 3 attempts to make myself a cup of tea as I kept having to turn the stove off to land a fish! All fish on chopped prawn - took maggot but didn't even put one on the hook!
  5. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0700 - 0915* 1000 - 1715˜ Mild, mainly overcast, quite breezy (some milky sunshine at times) - light showers on and off all day with rain for last hour and a half. AT around 12/13ºC all day. *27Perch - with 13 (!) over 1lb - and 3 over 2 - best 2lb 7oz. ˜(½mile upstream!) 7 Perch - all over 1lb (3 over 2) best 2; 3lb 10oz? & 2lb 11oz. A doz roach and a dace - all small. What a Red Letter day! Make hay while the sun shine's! Nailed on conditions for a day's winter perching, mild and overcast after a 2 week cold snap - just knew that stripeys would be on the munch - but didn't dream of such a return! The morning was just ridiculous - fishing was almost 'Mr Castwell' at times - cast out, let the float cock, float dips - 1lb perch - repeat! Thankfully the bites were drying up when the local yoofs turned up and with no sense of etiquette made base camp not 10 yards from where I was fishing. Suspect they weren't even members but as I was out numbered 5-1 discretion proved the better part of valour - and I moved upstream earlier than planned - but also thankful to escape the dogs - one having knocked over my bait box and another had tried to steal my lunch! The rest of the day started serenely - fishing yet another swim I've not fished before I was straight out with a lob again and settled into my seat to watch a stationary float. After an hour I'd switched to maggot and soon started catching small roach - and hoping these would draw some perch into the swim - but really just killing time until the light started to fade. By 1530 I was out with a lob again - and met with instant success in the shape of the 2-11. Slow and steady sport then ensued - interupted by an unexpected barge - which put an end to action for nearly an hour - however there was still time for one really special fish -the only bite 'post barge' - but what a fish - my biggest perch (and first 3lber) for 5 years. And my biggest from this stretch of canal by a country mile - fat as a football - it had clearly been on the munch!
  6. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Warm evening (though temps were starting to plummet when I left) 21º->12ºC. 2 Carp: 13lb 14oz, 7lb 2oz. 2 Tench - both quite small but pushing a lb. 3 Crucians - handsized. A session topped and tailed by the 2 carp. The biggie snaffled my float fished maggot within 20mins of starting and with a 16 to a 4lb bottom I was grateful for the help of a fellow angler for its netting! In truth the carp were a pain - especially until it got dark as they were clearly pushing out my target fish (I lost a couple more to hook pulls and bumped 2 or 3 more striking at liners). Thankfully the tincas and lovely miniature crucians eventually turned up - only to be pushed out again by the returning carp for the last half an hour. All fish caught in the margins right under my rod tip.
  7. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1900 - 2330 Warm, clear evening (Great views of Jupiter, Saturn & Mars) 21º-16ºC 3 Tench; 3lb 11oz, 2lb 13oz and a smallun (though would have been close to a lb). 2 Rudd (small but not micro-small!) Slow evening which burst into life a little after 10pm when I had all 3 tincas in quick succession - prompted me to spend an extra half an hour beyond my intended pack up time - but had no more bites after 2245. Last blackberry haul of the summer!
  8. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2230 Overcast and breezy with showers for the first hour. 21º - 18ºC bit felt chillier in the breeze. 1 Tench; 2lb 5oz. 3 Crucians - 2 'hand-sized' the third slightly bigger. 3 Perch. So at last I've caught a crucian out of Willows this season - just not quite the size I was after! Most fish in the first couple of hours and I should probably have had more has the bites were quite tentative and hard to spot in the heavy ripple. Only one fish after 2100 - the bigger crucian. Perfection in Miniature
  9. Harris Lake - Marsh Farm , Milford. 0630 - 2330 Warm (still 18ºC when I got home at 0100), overcast and DRY - despite the forecast and the downpours the day before. There was some VERY annoying light drizzle for the last hour or so - but overall conditions were very benign - thankfully! 2 Crucians; 3lb 1oz & 2lb 9oz. 4 Tench - 2@4lb+ - biggest 4lb 9oz. 3 Perch. A doz+ Rudd (micro!!) 3 Time lucky! This is the 3rd IAC fish-in I've organised in 2020 and the first one to actually take place. The Grayling day on the Itchen in Feb was cancelled due to Storm Dennis. The Marsh Farm fish-in in June was postponed due to Covid so was thankful this deferred date got off the ground. Covid depleted numbers (some not getting time off work having only recently returned from furlough) but it was as ever a social as much as a fish-in - and raising some money for Sue Ryder in memory of Paul. All the talk leading up to the day was on what the weather would bring - with 3 of the party also fishing the venue the day before and sitting out apocolyptic amounts of rain! Thankfully we had not a single drop of precipitation until well after dark when Brian and I were the only ones left - and some VERY annoying light drizzle set in! Fish during daylight hours were sparse - with Howard winning the day with the biggest crucian, caught by the cut-off, at 2lb 7oz. (He also had the 2nd best at 1lb 10oz). As usual on these days all my action came at dusk and once the 'offical' competition had finished - with a rather splendid (if somewhat obese!) crucian on the stroke of 9 o'clock weighing in an ounce over 3lb - my biggest from this venue for 7 years.
  10. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 0200 Hot and sultry. 28ºC and still 18ºC when I packed up at 2am. Bit of a breeze at times but not enough to keep off a veritable plague of mossies - plenty of Jungle Formula was called for! 4 Tench; 3lb 4oz, 3lb, 2lb 13oz, 2lb11oz. 1 Carp; 6lb 11oz. 2 Roach - handsized. 4 Perch.(and another 3lb of blackberries!) Steady evening's sport on one of the warmest nights I've ever fished. Rotated between maggot and prawn - all the small stuff on mag - 3 tincas and the carp on prawn. Again was nice not to get bothered (too much) by the carp - though they had clearly moved in at the end of the session as I landed the one and 'bumped' a couple more in the last hour.
  11. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1830 (by the time I started fishing) - 2300 Warm, slightly overcast evening. AT 23ºC down to 16ºC when I packed up. 1 Tench (small), 2 Rudd (very small!) This evening's venue choice was dictated by the quality of the blackberries rather than the fishing! Another 3lbs picked which Mrs P will be converting into her rather lovely bramble jelly! Fishing was pretty dire - my worst return from Alders this summer. All fish around 2130 when I had half an hour or so of dithery bites which I couldn't hit - which I eventually put down to the micro-rudd! I did eventually manage one of the small, newly stocked tincas - a little bar of soap!
  12. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 0000 Warm, overcast and breezy. AT a balmy 18ºC at midnight! 2 Tench; 3lb 5oz & 2lb 7oz. 1 Crucian - handsized. Surprisingly slow evening with bites at a premium, though nice to get another of the lake's small crucians. Tench were 3 hours apart (8&11pm) with the crucian putting in an appearance just after 10pm. Alternated between prawn sections and maggot - though all fish falling to maggot. Had intended to fish longer but driving drizzle (and a stationary float!) persuaded me otherwise!
  13. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2315 Overcast and warm(ish). AT 15ºC when I packed up. 1 Bream; 5lb 10oz. 2 Tench: 2lb 15oz and a smallun. 1 Crucian - small - handsized - but a very welcome sight. 4 small Rudd. First time in a few seasons I've had tench AND bream in the same session from here - the bream was very much a last cast fish - was starting to pack my stuff away when I noticed my float dithering around and I assumed it was another crucian or even a crayfish - so very pleased to lift into a lumpy bream - my biggest (by a few ounces) from here. Crucian was a real bonus - clearly one that was stocked last winter - hope they can stick around and put on some weight!
  14. Harris Lake - Marsh Farm - Milford 0000 - 0500 Cool and clear. (Thermo in the car was at 4ºC when I left - and it felt chuffing cold - thankfully the fish kept me busy!). Good night for observing the night sky - lots to see. ISS went over twice, perfect visibility of Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. Venus rising at dawn was stunning - and could clearly see Comet NEOWISE just before sunrise in the eastern sky - twas visible for around 20mins at around 0320 - and I even saw a stunningly long meteor. 4 Crucians; 3lb 0oz, 2lb 14oz, 1lb 13oz, 1lb 11oz. 8 Tench - 3 over 5lb (6 over 4lb) - best 5lb 8oz. Succesfull salvage operation especially as I had a couple of crucians that were of Johnsons proportions - my first 3lber from Harris since 2013! Again float fishing prawn sections very tight to marginal lillies - got off to a flyer with 6 fish in the first hour or so (mainly tench). Tried a different tactic of not loose feeding at all so as not to encourage the tench - didn't work! Bites did tail off a bit after this initial frenzy - but at least when the float did go under it resulted in more crucians - 3lber was one of the last fish of the session...

    3 July

Willows Lake - Thatcham 1400 - 2015 Bright and breezy (actually blowing a hoolie!), clouding over with persistent rain from 1730 and much cooler - making for a thoroughly unpleasant evening! 4 Tench; 2lb7oz & 3 small uns. 4 Roach - all a 'nice' size, the one I weighed went 12oz the other 3 weren't much smaller. 5 Rudd. (And no carp - don't think I even had a bite from one) So there are some 'silvers' in Willows as well (Have these rudd been recently stocked???) Again was hoping for a crucian to put in an appearance but bite detection was a nightmare in the very heavy chop - was boss eyed by the end. In truth I should have had a lot more - missed loads of bites and bumped at least as many fish as I landed. Had planned to fish well into dark - but the 'I'll be glad when I've had enough of this' moment corresponded with the rain abating (but not the wind!!!) and a hot bath was suddenly way more enticing than another 4 hours getting mesmerised and cold!

    2 July

Alders Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2300 Coolish, overcast with rain from 8-9pm - not a good evening to forget the brolly - had taken it out of my quiver as a weight reduction measure for my roving session at Brimpton last weekend and forgot to put it back in!? Temps down to 13ºC when I packed up. 3 Tench: 3lb 13oz, 2lb 5oz and a small-un. 5 Rudd, 1 Roach, 1 Perch. Damp but rewarding session - first time for a while I've had any 'silvers' from here. Also had a crayfish which is also a first for me from this lake, though I know others have complained of them. Most fish during daylight - little action after 2130 (which again is unusual) - just the small tench and the roach (and the signal!) in the last hour and a half.
  17. Harris Lake - Marsh Farm, Milford 0000 - 0500 Clear, quite cool, still with some breeze. 11ºC - but felt chillier. 5 Crucians: 3 over 2lb - 2-13, 2-11 & 2-04. 10 Tench: most in the 2-3lb class. Biggest 2 went 6-05 & 4-04. 1 Perch. If the previous 10 hours angling had been frustrating the next 4 were totally frenetic. Fishing right under my rod tip in the margins my float fished prawn sections were taken within minutes of casting out each time. What was slightly curious was the 'catching order'. I started off with 5 tench - then had all the crucians in quick succession - only for them to be pushed out again by the tincas. Day break saw an abrupt end to the action ( I think I only caught one fish after 0415 - which was the 6lb tench) and by 5 o'clock I was staring at a completely stationary float without a hint of what had preceded!
  18. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2230 Cool, overcast evening after a day of persistent rain. 14ºC all evening but felt cooler facing the breeze (which at least kept any mossies away!) 7 (!) Tench; 4 small ones (last year's stocking?) and 3X3lbers - biggest 3lb 8oz. Well I wasn't expecting that! It's taken a while since the fish kill 15 years ago and the remodelling of this lake - but if this is the sport now on offer then all the effort has not been in vain! I hadn't even planned to fish here today but I didn't really fancy standing on the river bank in the pouring rain. Bites and fish straight away - though 2 of the 3 bigger ones came after 2130 as it was getting dark. All fish on float fished maggot - took prawn but didn't use them.

    8 June

Willows Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2300 Coolish, overcast evening though temps didn't really drop when it got dark - 14ºC. 2 Carp; 8lb 5oz & 7lb 11oz Entertaining evening as both fish took an age to land on lightish tackle and float rod (I was after crucians as per usual!). Thankfully there are few snags and you can wear them out at distance with the only jeopardy being when you get them close in to net and they seem to realise there are tree roots available! Was hoping that dusk might bring some action from my target species - but saw little evidence of them....

    20 May

Willows Lake - Thatcham 1400 - 2200 Warm and sunny with a nice breeze to keep the mozzies away! 1 Tench: 3lb 13oz. 2 Carp: 5lb 11oz & 4lb 6oz. A rare (very - I usually have a bit of a break in the spring) 'closed season' outing - a trip to cure the lockdown blues! Just wanted to sit on the bank and watch a float for a few hours not even so bothered about catching! As usual I set my stall out to try and snaffle one of the lake's big but scarce crucians and as the tackle shop had no maggots it was straight out with the float fished prawn sections a rod length (or less) from the bank. Bright conditions did not make for good sport and I didn't get a bite until gone 6.00pm when the bigger carp snaffled the bait. There then followed a really frustrating evening - lots of sail-away 'un-missable' bites which had my striking into thin air - it happened time and time again - think fish must have been attacking the shot. The only time I did connect it was another carp until finally just before 2200 a dithering sort of a bite resulted in the lovely plump tinca - can't remember catching one bigger in Willows at least not for the last 20 years. And just as I slipped her back the International Space Station passed overhead! A lovely evening all round.

    1 June

Warwicks Water - Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Warm sticky evening - shirtsleeves weather - apart from the mossies! 1 Tench; 2lb 7oz. 2 doz+ Roach & Perch (2-1 in favour of roach) - all small - save for a couple of perch which might have pushed 6-8oz. Started off float fishing maggot - a plan that I was quickly dissuaded from - as the float never had time to cock before I had a fish on. So within half an hour I'd switched to corn and settled down to an evening watching a stationary float. With the light fading I switched to prawn sections - hoping this wouldn't be a magnet for the perch! Thankfully the only bite came a little after 2200 just as I was contemplating packing up when without warning the float shot under and a muscular male tench was the result. This success prompted me to stay another hour without so much as a flicker of further activity.

    26 May

Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2230 Warm, slightly overcast evening with little breeze - still 17ºC when I left. 3 Bream - all of a similar stamp between 2¾ - 3½lb. Beginning to make a habit of this!! Bites at a premium - not a touch for the first 2 hours or so then all three fish between 8.30 - 9.30pm as a shoal of bream obviously got their heads down over some groundbait. Quite a few fish topping as it got dark but no more action. Stayed for another biteless hour hoping for a tench or 2 to show up...
  23. Fishing: Is it just about catching fish? Or is there something else? This might sound strange to many but a recent post by me about looking for float fishing glides and the enjoyment this type of fishing made me wonder how others approached fishing. Is it simply the quest to catch the biggest, rarest, hardest fighting, or largest quantity of fish or is it simply enjoying an escape to the river bank and the chance to enjoy the surroundings whilst keeping an eagle eye on the progress of your float down the swim? What does fishing mean for you? What floats your boat in the world of angling?
  24. As I write, yes, I know this outing was six weeks ago, the weather is changing, heavy rain, cooler temperatures, and it gets dark a lot earlier! This was my last solo night session of the year, and whilst I look forwards to the autumn and winter fishing, I have thoroughly enjoyed my summer obsession with crucian carp and tench this season. This was my last but one visit to Harris Lake, (the last being with Chris Plumb, in early September) and I was lucky enough to find one of my favourite pegs vacant. Actually, I wasn’t lucky....there was no-one else fishing the lake, perhaps a bad sign? It turned out to be a relatively quiet night on the fish front, well, quiet for here, with seven crucians to 2lb 7oz, and seven tench to 5lb 3oz. For once my feeder tactics failed to tempt a single fish, with everything being caught on float-fished tiny bits of prawn. Best fish of the night was this crucian. I think it will be a few months before I get chance to take another picture of a Marsh Farm sunrise! Post trip note : I did manage one more outing for tench, on 23rd September, catching three around the 5lb mark, on a very misty morning….just thought I would include a photo from the outing, as this and the one above serve to remind me through the coming cold months of a tench-fishers dawn!
