  1. River Lambourn - Newbury 0830 - 1300 Mild, overcast and breezy. AT 11/12ºC. River very high - 1.96m on the Shaw gauge (21cm above top of normal range) but crystal clear despite nearly (yet) another ½ inch of rain yesterday. 13 Grayling: 5 over a lb - best 3; 1lb 13oz and 2 @ 1lb 9oz. 2 Brownies - both around 1¼lb (and might have been the same fish!!). Usual rest and return tactics - most fish from 3 swims and most fish on trotted red corn. Not so much The lady of the Stream - more The Black Prince!
  2. River Lambourn - Shaw 1000 - 1400 Cool and mainly cloudy. AT 7º-9ºC. River VERY high but as clear as gin. 1.96m on the Shaw gauge (21cm above top of normal range) - first time I've ever seen sandbags on the Lambourn! 6 Grayling - a couple of pounders (though not by much). 5 Brownies - biggest 3lb+ with another around half that and the rest all small. Scratchy morning on a very pacey river. No swim gave up more than 2 fish and resting and returning was largely unsuccessful - though the last hour was a lot brigther which didn't help!
  3. River Lambourn - Newbury 0830 - 1230 Cool with sunny spells. AT 4º-9ºC. River in flood. 1.95m on the Shaw gauge (20cm above top of normal range). Riverside Lane was under water. Also carrying a bit of colour after it rained all day yesterday - fullest I've ever fished it! 17 Grayling: 9 over a lb, best 4: 1lb 15oz, 1lb 14oz, 1lb 11oz, 1lb 7oz. 5 brownies all around 4-6oz. The ever reliable Lambourn comes up trumps again. Most fish from 4 swims which, as I had the place to myself, I was able to fish twice, with 3 of the 4 producing good fish again after the rest and return policy. Waders a must for nearly every swim on the venue! Nearly a 2...
  4. River Lambourn - Shaw 1115 - 1415 Mild, breezy with some sunny spells and some drizzle. AT 11ºC. River VERY high. 1.95m on the Shaw gauge - 20cm above the top of normal range and 27cm higher than my last visit here. Even had a tinge of colour! 13 Grayling - 7 over 1lb - best 1lb 7oz. 5 Brownies - a pounder and 4 parrs. Never seen the Lambourn so high - took chesties and needed them to stand up to my thighs in water, where I'd normal stand on dry land! Also very rare to see it with some colour - sure sign we've had a lot of rain in the past day or so. Most ladies from the church stretch - in fact, unusually, most from one swim.
  5. River Frome - Wool 0800 - 1400 Mild, overcast and very windy! AT 11º-13ºC. River still very pacey with a little colour but well within its banks at last. 1.16m on the E Stoke gauge still higher than I would have liked but lowest since early autumn! 11 Grayling: 7 over 1lb - best: 1lb 10oz, 1lb 8oz, 1lb 7oz. 1 Trout - small. 6 Salmon parr. 2 trip of the season to Dorset - and looking at the forecast for the next week probably my last - heavy rain will stuff the river up for several weeks again. Wind made fishing a bit of a challenge at times it was straight downstream in most swims - actually standing up in the stronger gusts was a bit of a challenge at times!! Most grayling from one swim which I kept resting and returning to. Sign on Wool bridge - might amuse some of my readers - Martin?
  6. River Lambourn - Newbury 0900 - 1200 Mild and overcast. 7ºC. River very high. 1.85 on the Shaw gauge upstream. Clear as always though. 12 Grayling with half over a lb. Biggest two 1lb 10oz & 1lb 6oz.. 4 Brownies a 'pounder' and 3 parrs. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics - waders needed to get access to most swims. The Lambourn has been very slow to run off after hitting record levels at the beginning of the month it has 'only' dropped 20cm (the Kennet has dropped 46cm in the same period). Nearly all of the 'pacey' swims which usually hold fish in normal years were devoid of fish - they were in the slacks! Had intended to walk back to the top and work my way down again after lunch but other anglers showing up put paid to those plans. A Lambourn Lady
  7. River Frome - Wool 0830 - 1400 Cold with unbroken bright sunshine. AT when I started was -6ºC warming to a balmy 5ºC when I packed up. River high - barely within its banks, VERY pacey and quite clear (though not as clear as the Kennet ATM!). 1.36m on the East Stoke river gauge (highest I've ever fished the Frome). 7 Grayling: the two that went on the scales went 1lb 13oz & 1lb 6oz the others all around 12oz. 1 Sea trout - circa 2lb +. The river gauges on the Frome have been registering levels above the top of 'normal range' since mid-October - until Tuesday of this week. With more rain forecast for the weekend plans were changed and a trip to Dorset was hastily arranged in case this was my only chance to actually use my DDAS ticket this year (the Frome season only runs from Nov - Feb). In truth there was still way too much water than I would have liked and I suspected it would be a bit of a struggle. Actually trotting a line was the biggest challenge for the first couple of hours, with the line freezing in the ferrules between each cast I was mightly pleased when air temps lifted into positive territory. Those 2 hours produced just 1 modest grayling from the fastest stretch so I spent the rest of the session below Wool (old) bridge where the water is a bit deeper (and slightly calmer). This second half was topped and tailed by the bigger grayling and the sea trout which stayed deep and had me convinced I was into a really big lady - ho hum!
  8. River Lambourn - Newbury 0930 - 1300 Cool and bright to start - clouding over. AT 5ºC. River VERY high (1.78m on the Shaw river gauge) I donned thigh waders and needed them to get to most swims I fished!! 19 Grayling: 9 over lb - best two; 1lb 10oz & 1lb 8oz. 4 Trout - all small/parrs. I usually like to start the New Year with a chub but on a recce yesterday I deemed the Kennet unfishable (I was wrong - see part 2!) so opted for the Lambourn as a safer bet. All my usual hotspots produced a fish or 2 (unlike my last trip). Can't remember when I saw the Lambourn so high - which is probably putting off a lot of anglers - I didn't see another rod - which is a bit unusual even on a weekday... First fish of 2024.
  9. River Lambourn - Newbury 0900 - 1200 Mild, overcast and very windy due to Storm Pia - some swims had some jeopardy due to falling branches! AT 11º/12º. River very high and clear. 1.67m on the Shaw gauge. 8 Grayling: half over a lb - best 1lb 11oz. 3 Brownies - all small/parrs. Bit of a 'scratchy' morning with most of my more reliable swims hardly producing a bite. Think all the extra water has pushed the fish into some unlikely spots. Eventually found some fish and had 4 from one slack - including the biggest of the morning...
  10. River Lambourn - Shaw 0930 - 1330 Cool, overcast and drizzly. AT 6ºC. River full and clear. 1.68m on the Shaw river gauge. 6 Grayling - a couple of 'pounders' - biggest 1lb 6oz, 3 around 8-10oz and a tiddler. 12 Brownies - all small/parrs. I had planned to fish the Kennet today - but another 14mm of rain yesterday will have completely stuffed up even my most favoured flood swims. Somewhat of a scratchy morning - largely failing to avoid the small trout which were everywhere. Session somewhat redeemed by the last fish caught which was also the biggest lady, from a swim that had recently been vacated by another angler!
  11. River Lambourn - Newbury 0845 - 1415 Cold and cloudy. AT -2º -> +1ºC. (Proper Grayling weather!). River very full and clear. 23 Grayling. 8 over a lb - best 4 went 1lb 14oz, 1lb 12oz & 1lb 10oz (X2 - different fish). 5 Brownies: all small/parrs. I do love cold days like this - wrapped up warm and staying mobile. Had the rare luxury of not seeing another angler so fished the length of the stretch twice with a break for lunch in between. Took corn but forgot it in the morning - doh - so fished with maggot first time and just corn the second. Corn caught fewer though 5 of the 8 'pounders' fell to it. Local tackle shop is stocking krill flavoured red corn which I was using for the first time. My theory is that red corn get's mistaken for trout eggs - and this stuff even smells the part!
  12. River Lambourn - Shaw 1215- 1500 Sunny spells - quite breezy and getting chilly. AT 8º-5ºC. River very full but crystal clear as always. 11 Grayling: 5 over a lb. Best two @ 1lb 10oz & 1lb 9oz. 8 Brownies; one 'pounder' the rest all quite small. Looks like being a great year for Lambourn ladies - another couple of fish well above expectations for this venue - and both first cast fish from a couple of usual hot-spots. River very pacey which meant some of my other favoured swims were too turbulent to be holding fish (though that didn't stop me running a float through them to confirm my hypothesis!).
  13. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1200 Bright and breezy with a few light showers. AT 7º - 13ºC. River very full - but crystal clear as always! 16 Grayling with 7 around a lb or better - 2 of which were substantially better at 2lb 2oz & 1lb 14oz (!). 8 Brownies - one real lump of around 3lb the rest all small/parrs. Default venue when the Kennet is in flood and my first 2lb+ grayling from the Lambourn in over 2 decades. (Last time was 27/12/01). Took red corn for a change (don't often use it here) and whilst it did catch me a couple of pounders - both big ones fell to maggot. As usual I didn't catch more than a couple from any one swim and whilst I had planned to wander back to the top of the fishery and work my way down again in the afternoon a number of other anglers turning up mid-morning had me changing my plans and 'going around the corner' to have a look at the flooded Kennet. Who needs the Frome!
  14. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1700 Bright start - clouding over somewhat after lunch - with a brief shower, AT 5º-15ºC. River full - bank high in places - though, thankfully not too much colour. 20 Grayling - very few under 12oz and quite a number around the 1lb mark. The three I weighed went 1lb 10oz, 1lb 15oz & 2lb 6oz. 1 Chub 4lb 10oz. 7 Brownies - 2-3½lb. Super day's sport and thanks to Neal for organising. We had permission to fish the upper beat - alas the river was in the fields and this stretch was all but inaccessible. However the one swim I could get to in wellies produced all the big grayling and the chub. Spent the afternoon working my way down the lower beat - in a case of 'catch a couple and move on'. Everything caught on red corn - I actually ran out of the stuff - I brought 2 pints of maggot and didn't use a single one! Itchen 4lber Trying to photograph grayling is akin to giving a cat a pill!!
  15. River Lambourn - Newbury 0730 - 1100 Cool and overcast - clearing to bright sunshine. AT 8º- 12ºC. River at normal levels. 19 Grayling with over half around the pound mark or better - the three I weighed went 1lb 8oz, 1lb 9oz & 1lb 12oz. 1 brownie - small. First frosts of the autumn always put me in the mood for grayling and this was a bit of an insurance session in case Storm Babet stuffs up the Itchen for my planned visit this weekend. Usual tactics of catch a couple and rest the swim with quite a few fish caught by sight - just striking when the bait gets taken. Session curtailed by a group of conservationists wading up the river to do some bank work!
  16. River Frome - Wool 0830 - 1345 Bright, milky sunshine - very cold start - the thaw arrived mid morning - which I was very thankful for - line freezing in the ferrules had made for a tough couple of hours prior to that. AT -6ºwhen I arrived ->+6ºC when I drove off. River at normal levels - 1.05m at the East Stoke gauge. 13 Grayling: 8 over a lb - the 3 I weighed went 1lb 14oz & 2 X 1lb 10oz (different fish!) most of the others lbers around 1lb 6oz. 3 Trout - a lber, one half that and a parr. Last minute decision to go - based on tomorrow's forecast for wind and rain. Lovely bit of river and worth the long journey - even if I didn't quite get the hoped for 2lber. Most fish from just 1 swim - which I rested for a couple of hours whilst I fruitlessly searched the upper part of the fishery for another hotspot - though there were 4 other anglers on the beat - which wouldn't have helped the quest! Nearly a 2 - a very chunky fish, similar in length to my 1-12 from the Lambourn last weekend but much stockier!
  17. River Lambourn - Newbury 1315 - 1500 Overcast with light showers. AT 8ºC. River at normal levels. 6 Grayling; best 1lb 6oz - the others half that or smaller. 5 brownies - a 'pounder' and 4 parrs. Quick trip before the inclement weather forecast for the rest of the week sets in! Being a weekday I expected to have the place to myself - not a bit of it - 4 other anglers on the stretch - so I had to eke out fish from less promising spots!
  18. River Lambourn - Newbury 0845 - 1215 Mild, overcast and breezy. AT 10ºC. River full and gin clear, as always. 13 Grayling; 6 over a lb, 2 not by much, 3 around 1¼lb and one of 1lb 13oz. 1 Roach; small - alas - don't get many roach from here - but they tend to be noteworthy when they do show up. 2 Brownies - both small. Bit of a scratchy morning - redeemed by the last hour on the bottom of the stretch which produced more fish than the previous 2½hrs including the big lady - my best from here since 2019.
  19. River Frome - Wool 0800 - 1430 Bright and sunny. Cool 3º-6ºC. River bank high - but not in the fields any more! Still with a slight tinge of colour. 1.27m on the E Stoke river guage (I've only fished the river once before when it's been this high!). 14 Grayling; 9 over a lb. Best 4: 1lb 12oz, 1lb 13oz, 2lb 0oz, 2lb 2oz. 4 Brownies; a 3lber, another half that and a couple of smalluns. 1 Sea Trout; 1½lb - a bar of silver - still covered in sea lice! The Frome coarse season is only 4 months (Nov - Feb) and for most of the last 2 months it has been well over the banks and only been remotely fishable in the last week or so. The river was still very pacey and today's tactics were about finding slightly quieter water. All fish from just 4 swims with 2 of them producing nice ladies after lengthy rests. I also spent nearly ¼hr connected to a decent salmon! I'd started to get the better of it and was wondering how the hell I was going to get it in the net when the hook pulled. Next trot through and it took my maggot again resulting in another 5 minute battle - with the same result ! Nice to see some large ladies returning - not had a 2lber from here since 2019.
  20. River Kennet - Hambridge 0900 - 1300 Cool & cloudy. AT 2º-5ºC. River still very high and clear - down a couple of inches on last weekend but not dropped as much as I'd expected after a dry week. 1 Chub; 3lb 7oz, 1 Bream; 2lb 3oz. 2 Grayling. Scratchy morning in my favourite flood swim with bites at a premium. Bream and grayling in the first ¾hr. Chub first cast after resting the swim for nearly an hour, while I had a leisurely lunch on the bank. Had planned to venture over to Speen this morning but didn't fancy battling with the chaos that is Newbury traffic at the moment - one of the main E-W routes is closed because of a gas leak!
  21. River Lambourn - Newbury 0900 - 1230 Cool, bright and sunny. AT 6ºC. River at normal winter levels - and as clear as gin (of course) despite heavy rain all weekend. 12 Grayling: 4 over 1lb - best 1lb 10oz. 5 Brownies - a lber and 4 parrs. An insurance session as I reckoned 32mm of rain over the weekend would have stuffed up the Kennet too much (I was wrong see part 2!) so opted for a couple of hours on the Lambourn as a cure for cabin fever! Bit of a scratchy morning - not helped by 5 other anglers on the stretch - most of my fish from a swim I've not caught from before - but which will warrant further attention on future trips - as I bumped a big grayling pretty much first run through. Not quite my first fish of 2023 (that was a trout parr!) - but the first one to need the net!
  22. River Lambourn - Newbury 1045 - 1445 Cold and cloudy. AT around -1ºC all day. River low 14 Grayling; 8 over a lb and as they got progressively bigger throughout the session I ended up weighing 5 of them - at 1-06, 1-07, 1-09, 1-10 & 1lb 12oz. 1 Brownie - small. I love days like this - wrapped up warm against an iron hard frost - which froze my landing net between each fish landed! As ever the Lambourn Ladies were very obliging despite the cold - fished the length of the venue twice (with a lunch break in between) - so most of my regular hotspots produced again after a good rest. Nice to see some good sized fish in this part of the river again..... Biggest two of the day...
  23. River Lambourn - Newbury 1230 - 1430 Mild, dull and overcast. 11ºC. River low. 18 Grayling - with around half a lb or better - the two I put on the scales went 1lb 8oz & 1lb 6oz and had a few more not far shy of these two. 1 Brownie - small. With 3 other anglers working the venue I was very pleased with this return - clearly managed to find a few spots that hadn't already been visited and like this morning's session further upstream managed to get a couple of shoals competing for freebies.
  24. River Lambourn - Shaw 0900 - 1230 Mild with milky sunsine - clouding over.AT 7º - 11ºC. River low and clear (of course). 15 Grayling with 5 an ounce or so either side of 1lb with the rest half that or smaller. 3 Brownies; 1½lb and a couple of parrs. Whilst the rains have had little impact (so far) on the local chalkstreams they have certainly stuffed up the Frome judging by the river gauges so whilst I had planned a trip to Dorset this weekend I had to make do with bothering the local ladies and make my first visits to the Lambourn this winter. Most fish from the church stretch - with nearly half coming from just one spot as I got a shoal competing for freebies which appeared to make them less cautious to gentles with a hook in!
  25. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1800 Bright and breezy. AT around 15ºC all day. River low and clear despite overnight rains. 30 Grayling with around two-thirds in the ¾lb - 1¼lb class with the rest not much smaller. Biggest 1lb 6oz. 10 Brownies between 1½ - 3½lb plus dozens and dozens and dozens of parr fish - a real nuisamce in the same way minnows can be! Lovely day - especially as I practically had the whole fishery to myself with only one other angler booked in. A real game of 2 halfs - when I stopped for lunch, having worked my way down the top half of the fishery in the morning, I'd caught just 3 ladies and a gazillion trout and salmon parr. This made the afternoon a maggot free zone - and was a case of eeking out what sweetcorn I'd brought with me with the emergency rations that live in the bottom of my tackle bag being pressed into action. Grayling of a remarkably similar stamp - amost every fish a few ounces either side of the pound mark made for a busy afternoon. No chub - though bright conditions and low water might explain that one!
