  1. River Kennet - Newbury 0930 - 1345 Bright and cold start, clouding over. AT no higher than 5ºC all day. River at normal autumn levels (actually slightly up on some previous autumns) and carrying a LOT of leaf litter. 4 Chub: 3lb 4oz, 3lb 1oz, 2lb 13oz, 2lb 10oz. 5 Grayling; Best 1lb 3oz. 13 Dace (quite a few in the 6-8oz bracket), 5 Roach and 5 small brownies. A morning's trotting in the cold - this venue is starting to return to it's old productive self (just need some barbel to show!)
  2. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1245 Cold (-1º -> 4ºC) bright and sunny. River very full but clear as always! 18 Grayling with around half a dozen in the 12oz class and a couple of bigger ones to 1lb 6oz. 1 Dace; 10oz & half a dozen brownies 1 fish of a 1lb plus the rest small or parrs. Another 2 inches of rain since last weekend has really stuffed up the Kennet and with the first frost of the year there was only really one choice if I wanted to get on the bank this weekend. Seems I wasn't the only one - I encountered 8 other anglers fishing here this morning! Usual tactics of catch a couple and move on - dace was a bit of a surprise - especially the size of it.
  3. Lower Itchen Fishery 0800 - 1800 Rain, rain and more rain - yes pretty much non-stop all day - though thankfully not particularly heavy apart from a few brief 'pulses'! River carrying a tinge of colour but otherwise looked in fine fettle! 3 Doz Grayling with half of these 1lb+. Best, 1lb 15oz with another half dozen in the 1lb10oz - 1lb12oz class. 3 Chub; 3lb 11oz and a brace of 2lbers. 9 Brownies - all between 2½-3½lb. 3 Salmon; 2 parr and a grilse of 5lb - on trotted corn! A soggy day in Hampshire though thankfully there was little wind and regular trips to the hut meant there were opportunities to dry out (a bit!). Nice average size of grayling - the trout though got to be a bit of a pain and meant I stopped using red corn - my usual first choice bait here for the ladies - but the trout were shooting to the surface and snaffling the stuff whenever I threw in free offerings it was if it were trout pellets in a stew pond and to get a salmon on the stuff is - well!!!!!
  4. River Lambourn - Newbury 0745 - 1130 Bright and sunny - river quite full after recent rains - but gin clear as always! 21 Grayling - nearly all over 8oz with quite a few over 12oz biggest 2 weighed in at 1lb 13oz & 1lb 9oz. A doz Brownies - most quite small with a couple of pounders. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics - chasing the maggots downstream! Session was bookended by the two biggest fish - biggest of the morning was on my second trot through and finished off with the 2nd biggest.
  5. River Frome - Wool 0800 - 1530 Bright and sunny - quite warm (16ºC) for Feb despite a frosty start. River quite full (1.06m at E stoke) and a little coloured. 7 Grayling - 4 over 1lb best 2lb 1oz & 1lb 11oz. 2 Trout (both sub 1lb) and a Salmon Parr. Sparkly day in Dorset with bites at a premium - especially in the morning - when I broke for lunch I had just 3 modest sized grayling to my name - but returning to the 2 swims that produced them resulted in better sport in the afternoon. Few other anglers which was a surprise for the last Sunday of the season here.
  6. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1700 Bright and breezy (very at times), River well up and coloured from yesterday's heavy rain - though conditions gradually improved throughout the day. 9 Grayling; best 1lb 8oz. 2 Brownies - 2½lber and a parr. 4th IAC Paul Goulbourn memorial grayling day - so it was nice to catch up with some old friends. Fishing was a challenge for all though as the river fined down I think most caught a few. Gary, who I fished with all day, was the star of the show with 5 ladies over 1lb - and the 2 best fish of the day at 1-10 & 1-15. He also managed to embed a size 14 deep into his finger and had to drop into minor injuries unit on the way home to have it extracted!
  7. River Lambourn - Newbury 0830 - 1045 Mild and overcast. River low. 19 Grayling. Over half a couple of ounces either side of 1lb with the biggest, a lovely jet black fish of 1lb 10oz. 2 brownies - both small. Usual catch a couple and move on trotting tactics.....
  8. River Kennet - Thatcham 0945 - 1145 Cool and bright. River up a touch with some colour. 1 Chub; 3lb 3oz, 1 Grayling; 1lb 9oz. 2 Dace, 1 Perch Quick session while Mrs P hit the sales. Super grayling for this part of the river - my biggest from here.
  9. River Lambourn - Newbury 0700 - 0930 Bright and sunny - milder than recently (no frost). River very low. 21 Grayling; Nearly all fish in the 10-14oz bracket - with quite a few just over 1lb too. Biggest 1lb 5oz. 2 Brownies. Catcha couple and move on downstream tactics - though in the low water it was often sight fishing - watching the fish take the bait - and trying to get the biggest in each shoal!
  10. River Lambourn - Newbury 0700 - 1100 Mild and Overcast. 8ºC. River quite 'full' and up a good couple of inches. 25 Grayling; Biggest 1lb 12oz with a lot of fish an ounce or two ±1lb. 2X 2lb+ Brownies ! Default cure for cabin fever after all the snow and ice. Big grayling first fish of the day and biggest lady from the Lambourn in over 5 years (since Dec 2012) - a dark fish that was almost completely jet black - as the big old ladies often are!
  11. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1400. Cold and mainly cloudy. -1º -> 4ºC. River clear ( as always) and much lower than expected given we've had over 60mm of rain in the past fortnight. 50+ Grayling with around half over 12oz and a good few 'pounders'. Biggest 1lb 10oz. 1 Dace, 2 Brownies - a 2lber and a tiddler. Cracking session - had planned a 2 venue day - a couple of hours here then a switch to the Kennet - but it took me 6 hours to work my way down the stretch such was the sport! Biggest grayling was first cast - and my best from here for a few years (since Nov 14 - now that I've checked!).
  12. River Frome - Wool 0745 - 1345 Cool and quite bright for most of the day. River at normal levels - 0.72cm at E Stoke. 9 Grayling; 7 over 1lb to 1lb 10oz. 2 Brownies to circa 1lb. 1 Salmon Parr. Started with a bit of a grueller - no fish of note at all for the first 3 hours. Moved to some swims I'd never fished before at the venue and thankfully found a few ladies - nothing approaching 2lb alas - but quite a few in the 20oz class.
  13. Northcroft Stream 0700 to 0930 Mild and cloudy with sun breaking through. River up a bit but with very little colour. 5 Chub: 4lb 1oz, 3lb 2oz, 2lb14oz, 2lb 9oz, 2lb 6oz. 1 Perch. Last minute change of plan which paid off handsomely! Had intended to fish much further downstream but hadn't reckoned on ¾in of rain yesterday and reasoned that the river below Newbury/Thatcham might be coloured up. 2 chub from the weirpool - (which had a salmon in it trying to jump the gauge weir!!!!) and 3 chub including the 4lber from my favoured chub swim further downstream... River Lambourn - Shaw 0945 - 1130 7 Grayling.
  14. River Frome - Wool 0745 - 1500 Mild, sunny spells interspersed with fine drizzle. VERY windy! At 10ºC. 6 Grayling: 5 over 1lb - all between 1lb 4oz - 1lb 11oz. 2 Small trout. River at 'normal' levels with a bit of colour. 92cm at East Stoke. Last weekend of the season here and it was a bit of a slog in challenging conditions - wind in particular was very strong and downstream in most swims. Bites at a real premium, but thankfully usually resulted in a half decent (and very fat) grayling.
  15. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1030. Bright and sunny after early rain. Milder than of late - AT 6ºC. River still low. 11 Grayling - all bar 2 over 8oz - biggest 1lb 7oz. 5 brownies - all small. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics. Bothered by pike in a couple of swims....
  16. River Lambourn - Newbury 0945 - 1230. Frosty with fog clearing to bright sunshine for final hour. River very low. 22 Grayling; 4 over 1lb - best 1lb 8oz. 2 trout parr. Productive trotting session while Jaq hit the sales! All biggies from last 2 swim a dropped into - quite a few fish caught 'by sight'.
  17. River Frome - Wool 0800 - 1400 Cool, and murky! River at normal levels with a tinge of colour (more than I expected to see! 74cm at East Stoke river gauge. 8 Grayling; all 'netters' with 6 over 1lb - biggest 1lb 9oz. 4 Trout: to 1½lb. Slow day in Dorset. Bites at a premium - in fact was fishing for nearly 3 hours before I had my first fish. All ladies were of a nice stamp though was hoping for something a little bigger. Main excitement of the morning was being briefly connected to a goodish salmon - rather relieved when it threw the hook!
  18. River Lambourn - Shaw 1045 - 1330 Still cool - with cloudy breaking to give some sunshine. River very low - 16cm on the Shaw river gauge. 9 Grayling; 2 'pounders' - biggest 1lb 6oz. 8 Brownies - most parr fish with a couple of bigger ones. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics - fish very spooky in low water conditions.....
  19. River Lambourn - Newbury 0700 - 1100. Frosty and bright - clouding over for the last hour. River very low. 31 Grayling; Most quite small but around a dozen needed the net - the 2 I weighed went 1lb 3oz & 1lb 2oz - with another half dozen not much smaller. 10 Brownies - all small save for one 2lber. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics - fish quite spooky in low water - though found a big shoal in the last 45 minutes which produced nearly half the total!
  20. River Lambourn - Shaw 0900 - 1200. Cool and Cloudy. AT up to 4ºC after the first hard frost of the autumn; got down to -4ºC in out greenhouse last night. River low - EA river gauge at Shaw reading 13cm. 47(!) Grayling with over a third of fish 12oz+. Best two ladies 1lb 6oz & 1lb 4oz. 3 Brownies - all small. Cracking morning's trotting. Fished 10 swims in total and had fish from 8 of them. Majority of fish, however (over 30!), caught from just 2 spots...
  21. River Lambourn - Newbury 0900 - 1130 Cool (1 - 4ºC) bright and sunny. River quite full and looking in great winter shape. 26 Grayling; 6 'pounders' to 1lb 6oz. Had to go out for some maggot for Monday's trip so perfect excuse to have a couple of hours by the river (not that I normally need a reason!). Normal catch a couple and move on trotting tactics....
  22. River Lambourn - Newbury 0830 - 1245 Bright and sunny 7ºC. River high as you'd expect but clear. 22 Grayling. 4 over 1lb - best 1lb 5oz. 9 Brownies - biggest 2½lb. As ever the default venue when the Kennet is in flood. Paul and I leapfrogged swims all morning and when we compared notes afterwards had had a near identical day - Paul had 21 ladies, also getting 4 over 1lb - his best 1lb 7oz - also had a bonus roach of around ½lb. Very pleasant morning....
  23. River Lambourn - Newbury 0945 - 1145 Overcast, mild and very breezy - with more sodding rain - becoming really quite heavy by the end. Would have fished longer but reached that "I'll be glad when I'm fed up with this moment" earlier than anticipated. River very, very full and carrying a little colour. 13 Grayling - 2 pounders (best 1.05) and a couple more just shy. 3 Brownies - 2 parrs and a 1¼lb fish. Maggots have their annual eviction as my bait fridge gets its once yearly clean and is press-ganged into Christmas duty. Plan had been to hit the canal at first light with Paul - but we both checked the rain radar at 0530 - thought 'sod that for a game of soldiers' - quickly exchanged emails to abort the mission and returned to bed. However I still had ½pt of maggot that needed using so making the most of a lull in the rain headed off to the welcoming Lambourn. Alas the respite was brief - and I probably would have fished longer if it weren't for the rain and more scarily the wind which was snapping off branches of the trees around me - one quite substantial bit of timber landing within 6 feet of me - so for the 2nd time of the day 'sod this for a game of soldiers' flashed through my brain and I was driving home not 5 minutes later!
  24. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1130 Cool and Overcast. 2-5ºC. River low, VERY low for late January. 26 Grayling; 10 over 1lb(!). Best 2 both 1lb 10z. Change of plan due to footy being re-arranged for this afternoon had pencilled in a Speen session. Scratchy sort of morning until I found a shoal of nice, feeding, grayling - had only caught 7 by 1030 - so had a manic last hour (from the same spot too!)
  25. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1130 Bright after a frosty start - 1st frost of the month. River very low. 29 Grayling, 11 over 1lb (!!). Best 3; 1lb 14oz, 1lb 8oz, 1lb 7oz. 1 Roach - unweighed but needed the net. 1 Brown Trout parr. Pure co-incidence that my first visit of the season here corresponded to the 1st frosts of winter. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics until I found a pod of sizeable grayling feeding confidently under the branches of a willow. More importantly they were feeding competitively too - so much so that within a couple of minutes of feeding, and not fishing, the water boiled everytime a sprinkling of freebies hit the surface. So it was off with ALL the shot - and switching to white maggot so I could see it easier resulted in a dozen or so fish in no time at all - watching each time for the bait to be taken before striking. All fish came off the bottom to nail the bait within seconds of casting out - exciting stuff! Most of the 1lb+ fish came from this swim including the biggest which I thought HAD to be a 2lber - HUGE dorsal fin - was determined to catch it - even pulling the float out of the water if another lesser fish started to make a bee-line for the hookbait. Funny how it suddenly got smaller when it was in the net!!!
