  1. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0645 - 0915 Northcroft Stream 0930 - 1100 Cool and foggy - lifting to bright sunshine for last half an hour. Canal: 4 Perch; 1lb 3oz & 3 tiddlers. 1 Chub; 1lb 9oz, 1 Roach 1lb exactly. A morning on the canal in search of perch - or at least that was the plan - so float fishing whole lobs to far bank bushes and snags. Somewhat surprised therefore to get a 1lb roach pretty much first cast - quickly followed by the chub - a few perch eventually showed up - but the crayfish attrition rate on my stock of lobworms suggested there wasn't many big stripeys in the area (if any!). Northcroft stream: 3 Chub; 4lb 6oz, 3lb 11oz, 2lb 2oz. 7 Dace, 1 Perch, 1 brownie. So as I'd worked my way down to Egypt Point I thought I'd have a quick hour or so at Northcroft. Fished the weir-pool for the usual mixed bag then dropped downstream to finish off the morning with the two bigger chub.
  2. Northcroft Stream 0645 - 0930 Cool bright morning - distinct autumnal nip in the air (was down to 6ºC when I started). River low and clear 1 Chub, circa 2lb, 2 doz Dace, 7 Roach, 2 Perch (both small), 1 Brownie 2lb 8oz. Dawn trotting session hoping to find a few decent chub - but they weren't in residence - probably not enough water at the moment. Brownie and chub from weir pool.
  3. Northcroft Stream - Newbury 0730 - 1030 Cool and overcast. AT 3-5ºC. River very low and clear. 3 Chub; 3lb 11oz, 3lb 7oz, 2lb 2oz. 6 Perch (all small), 4 Dace & a 2lb+ Brownie. A morning travelling very light - most fish from the weirpool.
  4. Northcroft Stream - Newbury 0645 - 0945 Cool, bright and sunny. River up a touch and with a hint of colour. 1 Chub; 1¾lb, 11 Roach - best 14oz. 9 Dace, 1 Perch & a Gudgeon. Trotted maggot. Most fish from the weirpool.
  5. Northcroft Stream & River Kennet - Newbury 0615 - 1000 plus an hour at Hambridge*. Bright, frosty start. Soon clouding over. River full, pacey and gin clear! 2 Chub; 4lb 8oz & 2lb 11oz. 5 Dace & 2 Grayling* Chub were the initial target and thankfully it paid to get bankside early (it got rather busy later). Both chub in the first half an hour. Spent the last hour trying to catch a large (12-15lb at a guess - got a good look at it) pike which repeatedly was attacking my trotting float. Unusually for me I had some deadbaits with me (for Plan B later in the morning) so put on a dead roach and trotted that through the swim - only for the pike to keep attacking the float on the retrieve and not the bait!!! - it happened half a dozen times yet also showed no interest in a floating plug when I switched to that. Plan B was to fish a large slack on the river proper with trotting gear and pike rod - but already 2 other anglers in occupation so I was left with a short trot in 3rd choice swim for a couple of grayling. Frosty chub - covered in black spot - though pic's a bit over exposed so can't really pick them out...
  6. Northcroft Stream 0445 - 0715 Warm (19ºC when I packed up) and overcast. 2 Chub 3lb 15oz & 1½lb. 2 doz + dace, 6 roach and 6 gudgeon. Pre breakfast trotting trip - mainly after the chub - though I did hear of a few barbel coming out on the float from here last summer - which would have made a very nice bonus - alas not to be! Nearly all the silver fish from the weirpool - both chub further downstream.
  7. Northcroft Stream - Newbury 1030 - 1130 Overcast with a chilly breeze - AT 6ºC. 1 Chub 2lb 3oz. Quick, impromptu session as Jaq hit the sales (again!). In truth, I didn't expect to catch as the stream was somewhat turbulent so rather surprised to see my float disappear on my first put in. It proved to be my only bite!
  8. Northcroft Stream 0730 - 0915 River Lambourn - Shaw 0930 - 1145 Bright and sunny after early morning rain (just stopping as I started to fish) Rivers (especially the Lambourn) surprisingly unaffected by recent rains (unlike the Dorset Frome which was Plan A for today! Northcroft: 2 Chub, 3lb 8oz & 2lb 11oz. 4 Dace and 3 Roach. Shaw: 11 Grayling to 1lb 3oz & 2 small brownies. Both chub from weir pool at Northcroft - pretty much my only bites from there. Shaw was hard going low water, spooky fish and 3 other anglers didn't help!
  9. Northcroft Stream - Newbury 0430 - 0815 Warm with cloudless skies. River looked in surprisingly good nick - still reasonable flow. 2 Chub - both circa 1lb (and possibly same one - caught nearly 3 hours apart!), 2 doz dace & 9 Roach. Pre breakfast trotting session - hopeful for some ( bigger) chub which didn't show up.
  10. Northcroft Stream & River Lambourn, Shaw. 0700 - 0815 & 0830 - 1130 Cold, and sunny. -3ºC -> +3ºC 2 Dace & a 2½lb brownie from Northcroft. 20 Grayling (biggest 20oz) and 3 small brownies from Shaw. A chilly morning's trotting. Started by trying to coax a chub or 2 from Northcroft - but quickly realised they weren't to be tempted. So it was off to Shaw for some easy grayling. Venue was rather busy with 7 other anglesr!!!
  11. Northcroft Stream 0700 to 0930 Mild and cloudy with sun breaking through. River up a bit but with very little colour. 5 Chub: 4lb 1oz, 3lb 2oz, 2lb14oz, 2lb 9oz, 2lb 6oz. 1 Perch. Last minute change of plan which paid off handsomely! Had intended to fish much further downstream but hadn't reckoned on ¾in of rain yesterday and reasoned that the river below Newbury/Thatcham might be coloured up. 2 chub from the weirpool - (which had a salmon in it trying to jump the gauge weir!!!!) and 3 chub including the 4lber from my favoured chub swim further downstream... River Lambourn - Shaw 0945 - 1130 7 Grayling.
  12. Northcroft Stream 0930 - 1400 Mild, overcast and VERY breezy. River in great winter shape - quite pacey with very little colour. 3 Chub; 4lb 6oz, 3lb 15oz, 2lb 11oz. 23 Dace. Couldn't decide where to go today - the mild weather suggested a canal perching session - the howling gale whistling around the house when I awoke at 0530 suggested other wise!! So a lay-in and Plan B - Chub - always a winter favourite. Smaller one in the weir-pool - the other 2 plus most of the dace from a nice run above the bridge.
  13. Northcroft Stream - Newbury 0930 - 1330 Mild, overcast and blustery with some drizzle in the wind at times. 12ºC. River at 'normal' levels and quite clear. 2 Chub; 3lb 3oz & 2lb. 2 perch - both around 10-12oz. 30 dace, 4 roach, 1 Rainbow trout - 3lb. Aim was to get amongst the chub - achieved with the first 2 fish caught - though when I dropped down from the weirpool to my more reliable chub spot I could only catch dace. Rainbow fight was interesting at is was chased around the weirpool by a rather large pike. Thankfully it didn't managed to grab it but it certainly made for a lively couple of minutes!
  14. Northcroft Stream 0700 - 0900 Overcast 13ºC. Stream low - sluice was ¾'s closed. 1 Pike 4lb 4oz, 2 Chub 2½lb, 1¾lb, 1 Bream 1¾lb, 3 doz Roach, Dace & Gudgeon (mainly roach and gudgeon), 2 Perch. Trotted red maggot - pike took a couple of red maggots on the retrieve.
  15. Northcroft Backstream - Newbury 0930 - 1200 Bright and breezy - 17ºC A dozen Chub (4lb 14oz, 4lb 9oz, 3lb 6oz, 3lb 3oz, 2lb 14oz - & 7 chublets), 3 Doz Roach, Dace & Gudgeon (in roughly equal nos.) Had a morning to kill in Newbury whilst the car was being serviced and MOT'd so a pleasant chubbing session was most welcome. All fish on trotted single red maggot - from a swim I last fished in 1982!!!!
