  1. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0930 - 1400 Overcast with constant drizzly rain, with the wind picking up considerably for last hour. AT 7º-9ºC. 11 Perch: 5 over a lb - best two 2lb 11oz & 1lb 14oz. Biggest perch first cast! And they seemed to get progressively smaller as the morning wore on! Had intended to stay until dusk but it was becoming rather unpleasant in the wind and with no bites for an hour and with a biggie already under my belt, the "I'll be glad when I've had enough of this" moment kicked in rather sooner! Fat as a football...
  2. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 1400 - 1600 Cool, calm with some milky sunshine. AT 7ºC 10 Perch; most quite small - with one good-un @ 2lb 4oz. 1 Pike c2½lb Successful dusk session after a big stripey, in a canal basin that is something of a winter aquarium - for predators and prey - as evidenced by a couple of the club's seasoned match anglers who were also fishing it when I arrived. They kindly let me drop in above them - and I was quickly having problems with pike - I got bitten off twice in the fist 20 minutes. A series of small perch followed before something that put a decent bend in the rod and that wasn't a pike was brought to the waiting net. A 'scissors hooked' pike soon followed and proceedings were brought to an end with yet another bite off.....
  3. River Kennet - Hambridge 0945 - 1415 Cool with a bright start - clouding over (thankfully). AT 4º-10ºC. River VERY high - highest I've seen it this winter - yet with surprisingly little colour considering it rained most of yesterday! 2 Chub: 3lb 10oz, 3lb 3oz. 2 Perch: 3lb 0oz , 2lb 7oz. 1 Roach (small), 1 Grayling (ditto). 1 Brownie - c2lb. Started off in my downstream flood swim - as it is more shady and had both chub from it (plus the red-fin, lady and brownie). Moved upstream after lunch as it was clouding over and my first swim had been trashed by the trout. Only 2 bites in the afternoon but they both produced quality stripeys including a second 3lber from this swim this winter. A fat 3lber!
  4. River Kennet - Hambridge 1245 - 1500 Overcast and drizzly. AT 9ºC. River VERY high up yet another couple of inches on my last visit (11 days ago) - but with hardly any colour. 2 Chub: 3lb 6oz & 3lb 2oz. 1 Perch: 3lb 1oz (SB), 1 Dace:(small), 1 Grayling;(ditto) Usual 'flood swim' bonanza - 2nd winter in a row I've had a 3lb+ perch from here. Started downstream of my usual swim which produced the 'smaller' chub and the 2 'silvers'.
  5. Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1430 - 1615 Cool and overcast. AT 9ºC 5 Perch; 3 between ¾-1lb+ and 2 tiddlers. All fish 10 mins either side of 1600 - not a bite before then!
  6. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0900 - 1330 Cool and sunny, clouding over late morning. AT 2º-10ºC. River very high but with only little colour. 3 Perch: 2lb 2oz and a couple around ¾-1lb. 1 Dace, 1 Roach. 1 Brownie - 2½lb. Bit of a gamble with the river so high - but I reasoned if I could find some 'quiet' water I'd find some fish. Morning got off to the worst of starts - trickling in small amounts of maggot for 10 mins didn't bring the hoped for first cast chub but another ruddy trout which went absolutely ballistic and totally trashed my first swim. As on Wednesday I was glad of some cloud cover bubbling up as bites were at a premium - but less so for the last hour - morning saved by the bigger perch - caught last cast!
  7. River Kennet - Hambridge 1230 - 1515 Sunny spells after morning rain. AT 8ºC (felt a lot cooler!). River still very high - if anything up and inch or so on last Friday but with nearly all the colour dropped out and LOTS of leaf litter. 3 Chub: 5lb 1oz and a brace of 2lbers. 1 Perch: 2lb 15oz. 1 Roach - handsized. Favourite flood swim produces the goods yet again! Took it nice and slow resting the swim for at least 10 mins after each fish and keeping the bait trickling in - seemed to do the trick as every fish came from exactly the same spot in the swim. Biggest perch of the season (so far!) and 2nd biggest chub of 23/24...
  8. Kennet & Avon Canal - Avington 0630 - 0930 Brightening up after overnight rain. AT 6º - 10ºC. 2 Doz perch. Nothing noteworthy - though they weren't tiddlers - most around 6-8oz with a couple twice that. I had great plans for this week - and they didn't involve prospecting for perch on my club's most westerly venue. The coarse season on the Frome opens tomorrow and I had intended to travel down to Dorset to make the most of the opening day. Alas heavy rain over the past week or so has put the river in the fields and looking at the forecast for the next week it's likely to stay that way for a while. So to a venue I last fished 4 years ago and as ever the quest was to try and find some of the big perch the venue throws up from time to time. Fished 4 swims and had perch from all of them - but nothing to trouble the scales. Increasing light levels brought the signals out in force prompting a pack up before I ran out of lobs!
  9. River Kennet - Speen Moors 1000 - 1400 Bright and sunny (for the most part!), AT 9ºC - 13ºC. River up 3 or 4 inches on my last trip here but with little colour. 7 Chub; 3lb 6oz, 2lb 11oz, 2lb 8oz, a 'pounder' and 3 chublets. 5 Perch: all between ¾-1¼lb. 1 Roach - small, 1 Gudgeon, 1 Brownie; 3lb+. A lively morning - went for a wander initially, though ended up relying on my favourite spot on the weir pool, with all fish of substance coming from it. It's becoming a bit of a banker swim!
  10. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0730 - 0930 Continuous rain for the entire 2 hours I was bank-side. Started just as I made my first cast and eased off just as I made my last! AT 9ºC 13 Perch - with the majority a lb or better - the six I weighed went: 2lb 12oz, 2lb 7oz, 2lb 3oz, 2lb 2oz, 1lb 14oz & 1lb 12oz with most of the rest in the 12oz-1lb class. First part of a favourite 'double-header' and a repeat of my trip here at the start of the month - with 3, 2lb perch in my first 3 casts! I had watched a forecast as I had my brekkie an hour earlier and the was no mention of morning rain (just afternoon showers which duly arrived) so was not amused at the drenching. Still the biggest of the morning decided to bite when it was at it's heaviest and my relatively new fishing coat was put to the test! Pike trouble ended proceedings again mirroring my session here 3 weeks ago and with clearing skies I was off to Speen.... 2nd biggest of the season...
  11. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0945 - 1415 Warm, overcast and breezy. AT 16º-18ºC. River down around 6-8 inches on my last trip here 3 weeks ago. 14 Perch: All 12oz or more - best two went 1lb 10oz & 1lb 12oz but all of the others were a few ounces either side of a lb. 6 Chub: 2lb & 1lb 10oz and 4 chublets. 9 Roach - all small apart from one 'netter' of round 10oz. 1 Dace - small. 12 (!) Gudgeon. 2 Brownies - a lump of around 3½lb and a parr. Super morning's sport and I was glad I'd saved some lobs as I started out on worm in a spot where I usually catch perch - but never in such numbers. And it can't be a coincidence that the sudden increase in gudgeon numbers - is linked to the number of perch around. 12 gonks is more than I've caught in an entire season - in some recent years (2021-22 for example when I only caught 11 all season!)
  12. Warwicks Water 0700 - 0900 Warm, overcast and quite breezy. AT 16ºC 14 Perch - nothing noteworhty. Another fruitless session after mythical monster perch - without the redemption of a tench or two. Small perch were everywhere I tried and a high lobworm attrition rate had me packing up and moving venues much quicker than I'd hoped!
  13. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0700 - 0900 Warm, calm and overcast. A lovely, benign autumn morning - perfect perching weather! AT 11º-14ºC 10 Perch: 7 over 1lb (6 over 1½lb). Best 3: 2lb 13oz, 2lb 6oz & 2lb 4oz After Monday's false start (on the Perch front at least) it was a first visit of the season to a more reliable perch venue - though one that didn't produce a 2lber for me last season. That was all put right in the first ½ hour when I had 6 perch from my first 6 casts - including all 3, 2lbers. Bites then suddenly stopped - and it was soon apparent why - Mr Esox - which chased in one of the smaller perch and then bit me off precipitating a, slightly earlier than planned, pack up! Biggest of the morning.
  14. Warwicks Water - Thatcham 0700 - 1300 Warm, calm and overcast (though a thunderstorm rolled in just after I packed up ) AT 16º-18ºC 2 Tench: 5lb 14oz, 2lb 2oz. Doz+ Perch: all fairly small. Reports of big stripeys had me starting my autumn perch campaign on this rarely fished and somewhat neglected pond. It was always going to be a case of trying to avoid the small perch and hope a biggie turned up. However I thought I'd hit the jackpot first cast - my float hadn't even cocked properly when it sailed away and I was into something putting a good bend in the rod. I was just thinking 'well that was easy' when the smaller tench rolled into the net. Not quite what I was after but an autumn tinca is always welcome. There then followed a couple of hours of small perch - nothing to trouble the scales and some barely bigger than the whole lob they took. The tench weren't finished with me however and for the second time I thought I was into a good perch - though this would have been a REALLY good perch! Not a Perch Also not a Perch!
  15. Middle Kennet (& Carrier) - Marsh Benham 0700 - 1400 Bright and sunny after overnight rain. AT 14º-16ºC. River at normal levels with a tinge of colour. 12 Chub; 6 over a lb - best 3lb 6oz, and half a doz chublets. 8 Perch; 1lb 12oz & 7 small-uns. 1 Bream 2lb 2oz. 30 Roach & Dace (more roach), 'a' roach of 12oz the only noteworthy fish. 1 Bleak. 1 Rainbow - unwelcome as ever but a real lump @5lb 10oz. All out attempt at trying to snaffle some bigger chub and avoid the smaller fish (at least initially) so it was out with the trotted red sweetcorn for the first time this autumn. Seemed to work - though i would have liked something a little bigger. First 2 fish on corn were actually the bigger perch and the bream. The only noteworthy roach also snaffled my sweetcorn offering. I caught a pike on sweetcorn from this venue a couple of seasons ago - seems like the predators are going vegan! Most fish from the main river. Vegan Perch
  16. River Kennet - Speen Moors 1045 - 1430 Bright and breezy with one light shower (and one cloudburst to finish!). AT 15ºC. River 'full' and with some colour - though not as much as below Newbury. 5 Chub: 2lb 7oz, a couple of 'pounders' and a couple of chublets. 3 Perch; 2@1lb 6oz (definitely different fish) and one of around 10-12oz. A dozen Roach - quite a few chunky ones. 2 Dace, 1 Gudgeon. 1 Trout parr. First visit here this season and the thundery showers kept me to the weir-pools. Had planned to recce up Parliament Draft but blackening skies and rumbles of thunder in the distance had me packing up early and route marching back to the car - failing by around 100 yards to get there before the heavens opened and I was lashed with hail and rain....
  17. River Kennet & Carrier - Marsh Benham 0700 - 1330 Warm and sunny (after a cool start) and with a very helpful couple of hours overcast from 9-11am - bites at a premium once this burnt off! AT 11º - 24ºC. River at normal levels with a tinge of colour. 3 Chub: 4lb 4oz, 3lb 1oz, 1lb 13oz. 7 Perch - 1lb 15oz the rest all quite small. 2 doz+ Dace - various sizes with quite a few chunky ones - biggest went 12oz and had another 4 or 5 around the 8oz mark. 15 Roach - all small. 1 Bleak. 1 Brownie - unweighed but easily over 3lb - probably pushing 4.... Super morning's sport - wandered around quite a bit and had fish from several different swims - smaller chub from the carrier - largest one plus the biggest perch from the weir pool. Had a curious little episode - when landing the bigger perch - one of it's smaller brethren swam into the net with it!! One of the maggots had been blown up the hook length and I think it was chasing that !
  18. Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1430 - 1730 Mild, cloudy & quite breezy with drizzle at times. AT 10ºC 2 Perch: 1lb 14oz & 1lb 11oz. A much milder day than recently, so decided to try for some stripeys on the canal. Suspect the water temps haven't caught up as bites were few and far between - with both fish in the last 45 mins before I then got bit off by a jack.
  19. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 1500 - 1730 Bright and breezy to start - heavy sleet showers to finish! AT 6ºC 3 Perch - a couple of 'pounders' and a tiddler. Disappointing end to the day (and the season) - I guess the topsy turvey temps over the last week have put the perch off somewhat, Didn't get a bit until nearly 5 o'clock - and then a brief flurry of activity - as the sleet fell - saved a blank!
  20. River Kennet - Hambridge 1245 - 1515 Mild, overcast and breezy. AT 11ºC. River still very full - clear and in great nick. Would have thought it would have dropped more after only 0.6mm of rain locally since 16 Jan. 2 Perch; 2lb 11oz & 2lb 4oz. 1 Chub; 2lb 8oz. 1 Bream 1lb 10oz. After fishing down the length of the Lambourn it was time for a quick lunch and a pop round the corner for a couple of hours on the Kennet. Usual bait and wait tactics met with a rare failure - was nearly half an hour before my first bite (the bigger perch). I then rested the spot for 15mins before recasting and had the bream immediately - repeat tactics resulted in the 2nd perch and the chub.
  21. River Kennet - Hambridge 1030 - 1430 Showery and very breezy after heavy morning rain (28mm already this month). AT 10ºC. River up again on Monday's levels and with a lot more colour. 2 Chub: 4lb 11oz & 2lb 8oz. 8 Perch; 7 over 1lb, with 5 over 2lb - best 2lb 10oz. 4 Roach - a netter of around 10oz and 3 small-uns, and the now obligatory gudgeon! Quick return to Monday's swim - though better prepared this time for a stripey campaign! Took lobs, and my keepnet made a rare appearance. I have a long held theory that perch that are returned after capture quickly tell their shoal mates of the jeopardy!. So every one caught today was subjected to temporary incarceration. Seemed to do the trick - five, 2lbers was a splendid return - though, as ever, the chub were first to appear on the scene!
  22. River Kennet - Hambridge 1330 - 1500 Bright and sunny. AT 6ºC. River bank high - with a lot less colour than I expected to see after such a wet weekend. 2 Chub: 6lb 5oz & 4lb 13oz. 2 Perch: 3lb 6oz & 2lb 6oz. 4 Roach, 1 Dace - all fairly small. 1 Gudgeon. WOW! Gotta love a good flood swim! Having fished out the Lambourn I thought I'd at least have a look at the Kennet - expecting to see it coloured up and flooded. And whilst it was bank high there was surprisingly little colour - so couldn't resist dropping into a favourite swim when the river is in flood. Even so didn't quite expect what was to follow - especially after a first ¼hr that was biteless. First up was the 2lb perch - sort of what I was expecting/hoping for as they seem to show here when the river is up. I certainly wasn't expecting another at a whole lb heavier which was pretty much next trot through - and a season's best too boot! I'd just put that back when the very next cast produced the big chub - a very stubborn fight - took an age to get in - in fact at one stage I thought I'd foul hooked a big bream as I couldn't budge it off the bottom! As soon as it was in the net I knew it was a 6lber - in fact I was even harbouring thoughts of a new pb - but the needle was a couple of ounces shy of that mark! The silvers and the gudgeon were next up and I was just about to quit while I was ahead when another fat chub decided to put in an appearance - 2 chub for a combined weight of 11lb 2oz - not bad eh? I've fished this stretch for 41 years and in the space of 10 mins caught my venue best chub (only my 2nd ever 6lber from here) AND my biggest ever perch from the venue - wow!
  23. Kennet and Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1330 - 1615 Bright and VERY breezy. AT 11ºC 1 Perch; 1lb 11oz That was a bit below expectations to put it mildly - especially after starting with a semi decent perch in the first 10 mins (and in bright sunshine)- it would prove to be my only bite!!! Wind was a nightmare and way stronger than this morning - made accurate casting and good presentation all but impossible. I fished on hoping that the witching hour would rescue proceedings - but it came and went without incident - alas!
  24. River Kennet - Thatcham 0815 - 1115 Warm (very for November) and mainly overcast (clearing for last ¾hr). AT 15ºC. River very low despite 5 inches of rain in the past 3 weeks! 2 Perch 1lb 12oz & 1lb 7oz. 1 Chub 1¼lb, 1 Dace, 1 Roach , 1 Gudgeon, 5 Trout parr. Started off, with worms for a change, in the weirpool as I've (correctly as it turned out) thought for a while that the place screams "Here be Perch!". However I'd caught the chub first cast and had been bitten off by a pike before the stripeys eventually turned up - just in time, as I was considering abandoning the project! Switched to maggot and went exploring my usual chub swims - but not a sniff of one - and 5 trout parr in 5 casts from my most 'reliable' chub hotspot set the tone for what was to come in the afternoon!
  25. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0745 - 0930 Warm (for late October), calm and cloudy with 3 brief showers. AT 13/14ºC. Perfect autumn perching weather - pity no one told the fish! 4 Perch: best 1lb 13oz with another 2 around ¾lb and a tiddler. Surprisingly subdued session - lots of activity on the surface and I concluded the perch were more interested in chasing fry than having my lobs for breakfast. The smallest perch I caught which was not much longer than the lob it took, had a gudgeon's tail sticking out of its mouth and I'm at a loss to fathom how it managed to take a lob with its gullet already crammed full!
