River Kennet - Newbury 0930 - 1245 Cool (3ºC) and bright. River still quite low despite yesterday's rain. 1 Chub c 1½lb, 14 Dace, 3 Roach, 3 Grayling & 5 Brownies - 3 of which ere over 1lb. Quick sesh while Jaq hit the sales! Hoping for a few more ( and bigger) chub but their usual haunts seemed to have been taken over by trout!

River Kennet - Brimpton 0730 - 1230 Cool, bright and breezy after a showery start. River low despite recent rains. 2 Chub: 5lb 1oz, 4lb 0oz. A dozen brownies to 2½lb. 1 bleak! Lovely brace of chub caught from the same swim (the 2nd and bigger fish after resting it for 90 mins). Trout were a bit of a pain!

River Kennet - Newbury 1730 - 2200 Mild/warm evening 14ºC. River very low. 2 Chub; 2lb 13oz & 1lb 10oz, 9 Dace and a Brownie of around 1lb. Still no barbel - but I did at least get a couple of chub this time. Yet again had an otter visit my swim!
-
River Kennet - Speen Moors 0700 - 1300. Overcast but quite mild. River low. 4 Chub - all between ¾ - 1¼lb. 5 Roach - all small apart from one cracking looking fish of 12oz, 6 Gudgeon & a 1½lb brownie. A morning spent doing nearly as much walking as fishing (covered 5.5km according to my pedometer!) Started out after perch in some favoured swims of old - but not so much as a bite (not even from a crayfish) - so it was then a hunt for some chub - eventually achieved in the last hour or so. And whilst I was hoping for something a little bigger is is always nice to see some smaller fish in the river to come through in the next few seasons...

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Cool and overcast - river up a tiny bit after recent rain and full of leaf litter. 4 Dace, 1 Roach & 2 Brownies Another barbel blank (preceded by the usual 30 mins or so trotting!), didn't even have any crayfish worrying the baits. Had planned to stay longer - but 3 sightings of an otter in my swim - didn't exactly fill me with confidence!

K&A Canal Colthrop River Kennet Brimpton 0615 - 0815 - Canal 0830 - 1100 - River. Sunny start quickly clouding over. Canal - blanked River; Chub 2lbish, 1 Grayling, 5 Brownies. First time on this stretch of canal - part of a plan to find some new perch hotspots - alas this doesn't appear to be one of them - not a bite of lobs so switched to the river for a rather sratchy session in VERY low water.
-
River Kennet - Padworth 1800 - 2300 Warm(ish) and overcast. River very low. 7 Chub; a couple circa 1lb, the rest half that size. 3 Roach, 2 Dace & 3 Perch. Another barbel blank on what used to be called barbel alley - preceded by a blank saving trotting session before it got dark - nice to see a few small chub - shows there's been some recruitment recently.
-
River Kennet - Nr Newbury 1800-2330 Overcast and breezy - river low despite recent rains. 1 Bream; 3lb 5oz, 6 Dace and a brownie of about a lb. Another blank barbel session preceded by an hour or so on the float. Did at least get a rattle on the ledger rods this time - but it turned out to be a surprise bream (from a very fast bit of water too). Shortly after this capture an otter surfaced right over my baits - putting paid to any further bites from anything apart from signals.

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Overcast and breezy temps around 16ºC. River low(ish) and very coloured (height of the boating season ) 1 Chub; 2lb 7oz. 10 Dace & 2 Roach. First attempt at a barbel this summer - but of course I started off with a trotting rod for an hour or so. Chub pretty much first cast which got the evening off nicely but as soon as I switched to the lead it was crayfish all the way!

River Kennet - Speen Moors 0700 - 1500 Mild and overcast. AT 14ºC. River at normal levels. 4 Chub; 4lb 3oz, 3lb 11oz, 3lb 3oz, 2lb 13oz. 5 Dace, 3 Roach, 4 Brownies - 2 'pounders' and 2 parrs. Kennet chub-fest part 2! 3 of the chub caught in the first hour which took the pressure off somewhat so went exploring - with little reward. Had quite a few lobs to use up but none of the usual perch haunts produced so much as a bite. Ended up in a swim where I caught my first ever 3lb+ perch (in 1999) but have rarely fished it since. This did at least produce my 4th chub of the day plus a couple of semi-respectable roach.

River Kennet - Thatcham 0815 - 1415 Mild and overcast. AT up to a very balmy 16ºC when I packed up. River quite pacey and clear. 4 Chub; 4lb 0oz, 3lb 11oz, 2lb 11oz, 2lb 8oz, 3 Grayling, 1 Dace. Fished 2 venues - one immediately downstream of the other - though different clubs - and had a brace of chub from each. All the grayling were quite chunky - in the 12-14oz class.
-
River Kennet - Thatcham 0900 - 1400 Mild and misty - sun breaking through for last hour or so. AT up to 11ºC. WT 11.1ºC. River up a few inches on last time here - good flow with little colour. 1 Chub; 2lb 9oz, 2 Dace, 2 Roach, 2 Grayling, 3 Brownies - 2X2lb fish and a smallun. Fished 2 swims around ½mile apart. Most fish from the first swim - the dace and roach were all a nice size. Only a couple of trout from the 2nd swim - though bright sunshine didn't help proceedings!

K&A Canal, Enborne & River Kennet, Speen Moors 0800 - 1300 Cool and Overcast, AT 6ºC. River up a bit with a tinge of colour. 3 Chub: 3lb 13oz with the other 2 a couple of ounces either side of 2lb. A frustrating morning on 2 counts. The plan was for a couple of hours perching followed by a day on the river. However, on arrival I was horrified to see that the CRT had been out with their chainsaws emasculating the vegetation on the far bank - bushes and overhanging trees - all gone. I didn't even recognise my favourite spot. Really hard to fathom the rationale for this - they weren't obstructing the boats - being a long way from the main channel. Anyways I fished for an hour or so without a bite - but did spy 4 cormorants - who were probably having a field day now the fish have no cover! My 2nd mis-calculation was not realising that there was a re-arranged match on. I did check before leaving but this was a postponed fixture from a fortnight ago when the canal was frozen. It was a pairs match as well with half the match anglers on Speen - occupying most of the swims I'd planned to visit - doh! Still Speen is a big water - and I headed off to the other end of the venue where I have caught chub fairly reliably in the past - and so it proved again - not many bites in total but when the float did go under my strike was met with solid resistance.

K&A Canal Enborne 0800 - 1115 River Kennet - Thatcham 1200 - 1430 Murky, mild and drizzly. Canal; 7 Perch to circa 1lb, 1 Pike 4lb 11oz. River: 1 Chub; 1½lb, 5 Grayling, 2 Dace, 2 Perch, 4 Brownies to 2lb+ Had planned to spend all morning hunting stripeys on the canal - but there was way too much boat (or rather canoe) activity for good sport. So switched to a couple of hours on the river - rather surprised to get so many grayling from here....
-
River Kennet - Newbury 1000 - 1330 Frosty and foggy. AT -1º -> +2ºC. WT 7.4ºC river very low and clear - needs some rain! 2 Chub; both a couple of ounces either side of 2lb, 11 Dace, 1 Roach, 2 Grayling & 3 Brownies. Pleasant trotting session - bites at a bit of a premium at times - but caught from all 5 swims a dropped into to.
-
River Kennet - Newbury. 0715 - 1100 Cool (5ºC), calm & cloudy. River surprisingly low and clear given all the rain earlier in the week. WT 9.4ºC 4 Chub; all between 1½lb - 2lb 14oz. 12 Dace, 5 Grayling, 3 Roach, a Gudgeon & 8 brownies. Pleasant morning's trotting. Chub were the target so very pleased to get that box ticked with 3 fish in the first 30 minutes. Trout were a flippin nuisance always jumping in the shallow water and killing whatever swim I was in!

Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0700 - 1000 River Kennet - Speen Moors 1030 - 1300 Overcast, with some light early drizzle becoming bright and sunny. River (and canal) very low. K&A - 11 Perch; 4 over 1lb - biggest 2lb 2oz. 1 Chub; 1lb (ish) Speen Moors - 1 Chub; 2lb 10oz, 2 Perch; 1lb 8oz and one just under 1lb. 2 Gudgeon and a Brownie. Slow start on the canal - having arrived before it was light enough to see my float I had to wait until 0830 for my first bite - but then had steady action for an hour. Speen was more of a walk than a fishing trip though did get the chub and bigger perch in consecutive casts from the first swim I tried - but in truth it needs more water - looking very threadbare!

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1800 - 2300 VERY warm and overcast- still 20ºC when I packed up! River up a bit after the weekend's rain. 1 Chub; 2lb 2oz, 2 Roach, 1 Grayling, 1 Brownie - c 1lb. Seems everyone had the same idea as me!! Car park was full when I arrived - so ended up fishing a swim I last fished in 2007. No barbel interest on the lead and no dace on the float either.Chub was also caught in somewhat unusual circumstances as it took a minnow I was reeling in!
-
River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1800 - 2315 Warm evening - still 17ºC when I packed up. 1 Barbel; 5lb 3oz. 1 Chub (sub 1lb), 3 Dace & 2 brownies both over 1lb. Beginning to get the hang of this! 2 Hours trotting for the obligatory chublet/dace/brownie combo, followed by an expected 3 hours staring at stationary isotopes - but again within an hour of darkness my downstream rod gave a familiar 3 foot twitch and I soon had my 3rd barbel of the summer on the bank - deja vu again...

River Kennet, Newbury. 1800 - 2315 Cool, overcast evening. River down to usual summer levels. 1 Barbel; 6lb 2oz. 1 Chub 1½lb. 30+ Dace. 1 Roach. Hurray, a barbel at last! Started off with the trotting rod as per usual - and again found a bit of river with stacks of silver fish. Then expected to spend a few hours looking at near static quiver tips (apart from the odd bat crashing into the line). However, just as it got properly dark the pellet rod (fishing a boilie on the other rod) nearly got pulled in and I was in to my first barbel of the summer - and a very welcome one it was too!
-
River Kennet, Near Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Warm and quite breezy. 2 Dace, 1 Grayling and 6 trout to 1lb+ Another failed barbel session cut short early by a large dog otter surfacing in by swim THREE times in under half an hour! :-(
-
River Kennet - Newbury 1800 - 2330 Warm, overcast evening (mossies were out in force!!). River down a couple of inches on opening week. 3 Chub; all between 1-2lb. 18 Dace, 6 Roach and 3 brownies. First of what will probably be many blank barbel evenings!! At least the chub seem to be hanging on - nice to see some school sized fish to come through - but as soon as I switched from the trotting rod to ledgering gear the only interest I had was from the signals - one of which was enormous - more like a mini-lobster!
-
River Kennet, Newbury. 1030 - 1330. Cold, and overcast with some sleety drizzle at times. Much heavier rain prompted a slightly earlier than planned pack up (coupled with no bites in the previous 45 minutes!). River 'full' with some colour - starting to drop out. AT 34ºF, WT 42ºF. (Balmy in comparison!) 2 Chub; 3lb 7oz, 2lb 0oz. 1 Perch; 1lb 12oz. 3 Grayling, 3 Dace. Successful jaunt in search of some winter chub though bites were at a premium all morning - first 3 fish were all grayling. Both chub on float fished lobs all other fish on trotted maggot.
-
River Kennet - Thatcham 0945 - 1315 Overcast, mild and breezy. River at normal levels with a tinge of colour. 2 Chub; 3lb 14oz & 3lb 11oz. 6 Dace - 4 in the 8-10oz bracket (nice!). 2 Grayling. 6 Trout; 4 over 1lb to 2lb 14oz. Nice to get more than one chub from here and nice to get the place to meself - somewhat surprisingly. A couple of the trout had gorgeous golden colouration - including the biggest one - though I wish they didn't impersonate barbel in they way they fought.
-
River Kennet - Newbury 0945 - 1415 Very mild, with milky sunshine at times. AT 59ºF. WT53ºF. River low and clear - almost at summer levels. 3 Chub; 3lb 1oz & 2 'pounders'. 5 Perch; 4 over 1lb - biggest 1lb 15oz, and one just shy of 1lb. 20 Dace. 6 Roach. 2 Grayling; both around 12oz. 3 Brownies; 2lb+ fish and a couple of parr fish. Very productive trotting session - standing in the middle of the river in shirt-sleeves in December! Found a shoal of perch right at the end of the session and a quick change to lobs saw 4 of them on the bank in 20 mins. (First one on maggot).
