  1. River Kennet - Brimpton 1400 - 1700 Cool, overcast and breezy with fine drizzle for last hour. AT a decidedly autumnal 15ºC. River a little on the low side - but not out of the ordinary for late summer. 1 Chub- un-weighed but around a 1lb. 9 Dace - all quite chunky. 10 (!) brownies all around 8-10oz with one a tad bigger. DAMN TROUT! Rare foray to the lower and slower stretches of this venue - but not before starting in my 2 'banker' chub swims - where the trout were insatiable - can't help thinking they'd been recently stocked - all a remarkably similar size. Dace from a swim at the bottom which warrants a bit more attention methinks!
  2. River Kennet - Hambridge 1230 - 1530 Warm and overcast after heavy rain this morning (15mm in 3 hrs). AT 19º-23ºC. River up a tad and with a bit of colour after said rains! 2 Chub: 4lb 5oz & 3lb 11oz. 9 Dace and a Roach - all small. 6(!!) Gudgeon. 3 Trout parr. I had intended to spend today on my syndicate stretch further upstream - but torrential rains this morning put paid to that idea. It's not really a venue for a short session as it takes me over an hour from door to swim so it was back to old reliable which is a mere 20 minutes away and I could drop into my banker swim without having to undertake major tree clearance first! Both chub from here - though over an hour apart after resting and returning - and those gudgeon certainly are making a comeback - can't remember when I last had half a dozen in a session!
  3. River Kennet - Hambridge 1130 - 1330 Dull and drizzly - quite breezy too. AT 16ºC. River still with nice flow for late summer. 1 Chub: 4lb 1oz, 11 Dace & 3 Roach - all small. 3 Gudgeon, 2 Grayling c6oz, 1 Perch - small, 2 brownies (ditto). Mrs P at the hairdressers was an opportunity to return here with a bigger saw to do some more 'gardening'! And of course I wasn't going to pass up the chance to wet a line for an hour or so.... Nice chub first cast - followed by the usual mixed bag!
  4. River Kennet - Hambridge 1300 - 1600 Warm and muggy. AT 25ºC. River still with good levels for mid August! 3 Chub: 3lb 13oz, 3lb 0oz and one of around ¾-1lb. 8 Roach & 8 Dace - all small. 2 Gudgeon. 1 Brownie- small. Friday afternoons - I am 'persona non grata' at home as Mrs P has a coffee afternoon with her friends - a tradition that goes back over 30 years (it was originally her post-natal group!) so Friday's are going to be a regular fishing day now that I have retired. Today, however I did more tree surgery than fishing - as 2 willows had come down across my favourite swim. Thankfully I keep a hand saw in my fishing bag - but it still took 45 minutes to gain access to the water! When it was time to fish I reasoned the commotion would have put fish down so I rested the spot and started elsewhere. Returning an hour later - with a few tiddlers including a rare gudgeon to show for my efforts, both 3lb chub came almost instantly followed by a steady stream of 'silvers'. A Kennet gonk - rarer than a 3lb chub!
  5. River Kennet - Thatcham 1130 - 1330 Bright and breezy. AT 20ºC. River at normal levels and with a bit of colour. 3 Chub; all small. 7 Dace & 4 Roach: ditto. 1 Brownie 1½lb First part of a chub hunting afternoon - and whilst it's always a good sign to see some juvenile fish in the river - I was hoping for something a little bigger!
  6. River Kennet - Brimpton 1415 - 1615 Mainly overcast and quite breezy. AT 20ºC. River up a good couple of inches and carrying a bit of colour. The Colthrop sluices are obviously open more than the Crookham ones' as there was a lot more flow here than a couple of miles upstream - before The Aldershot joins the river. 3 Chub: 4lb 6oz, 2lb 11oz, 2lb 3oz. 5 Brownies, a 'pounder', the rest between 6-10oz with one a repeat capture! All chub from my banker swim which I fished twice - with a rest in between while I went blackberry picking! 4lber first cast after the usual bait and wait approach - made a pleasant change from a splashy trout grabbing my maggot first put in!
  7. River Kennet - Hambridge 1330 - 1530 Warm(ish) and overcast. AT 19ºC. River down quite a bit on Monday - at least 3 inches... 1 Chub: 3lb 4oz, 6 Dace, 2 Roach (all quite small). 2 Brownies both 6-8ozs. Really surprised to see how much the river had changed since my trip here on Monday - the swim I wanted to target had a completely different 'feel' to it (and not in a good way!!). Managed to winkle out a solitary chub from it - but not the barbel I was hoping for!
  8. River Kennet - Padworth 1500 - 1630 Bright and breezy. Quite warm out the wind. AT 21ºC. River quite full for mid July. 1 Chub: small. 1 Roach, ditto. 2 Brownies both around 1½-2lb (definitely different fish - one had a growth on it) My day on the river was rounded off with a visit to a rarely visited venue - but one that has thrown up some nice roach from time to time - and that was sort of what I was after today. However and somewhat predictably, the only fish to put a serious bend in the rod came from trout. Saw the otter making its rounds as I packed up....
  9. River Kennet - Brimpton 1135 - 1415 Bright and breezy quite warm - 20ºC. River quite full with good flow - especially for July 1 Chub 2lb. 6 Trout - various sizes from 6oz - 1½lb. Oh, how I detest spotties - they were in every swim I tried (I lost nearly as many as I landed!) and even resting and returning to my favourite chub hot-spot just brought more of the blighters! Dropped into the weir-pool for a solitary fish without an adipose!
  10. River Kennet - Hambridge 0700 - 1100 Bright and breezy. Felt quite cool to start. AT 12ºC - 19ºC. River up an inch or so on last week - after a very wet weekend! 6 Chub: 4lb 5oz, 3lb 11oz, 3lb 7oz, 3lb 3oz, 2lb 10oz & a 'pounder'. 4 Dace, 2 Roach - all quite chunky. 3 Brownies a fish of around 1¼lb and a couple in the 6-8oz bracket. Quick return to last week's venue hopeful that I could pull off another float caught barbel - so concentrated my efforts on a swim where I've had them in recent seasons - but it was full of chub!
  11. River Kennet - Hambridge 1300 - 1600 Warm, overcast and breezy - with a couple of very light showers (much lighter than was forecast!). AT 23ºC. River still with good flow for mid July though down an inch or two on 3 weeks ago. 3 Chub: 4lb 5oz, 2lb 3oz & a 'pounder'. 1 Barbel 2lb 2oz (hooray!), 2 Perch; 1¼lbs & a tiddler. 9 Dace, 4 Roach (nothing noteworthy), 1 Gudgeon, 3 Brownies two in the 12oz - 1lb class (possibly same fish!) and one half that. Normal service has been resumed with most of the fish from my two usual hot-spots - really nice to get a barbel trotting (and my first gonk of the season!)
  12. River Kennet - Thatcham 0930 - 1100 Bright and breezy and a lot cooler. AT 18ºC. River surprisingly low (given how full other stretches are...) 3 Brownies: 2½lbs, a pounder and one of around 8oz... Quick session to use up some maggot before I go to Devon on Friday. Surprised to find another angler in one of my banker swims - I rarely see another soul here - even less so on a week day! Could only winkle out spotties from my other 'bankers'...
  13. A start to the season in two parts. Firstly, I thought I'd spend several hours on the lakeside eager to catch a few tench before the sun rose and ruined everything. Needless to say the olive green beauts thought otherwise and bites were limited to 3 small roach and a pound-and-a-bit bream. Made it late morning to the hot and sunny syndicate at Marsh Benham where I was happy to bump into CP of this parish who'd caught his quota and was now headed home to watch the test match. Rumour elsewhere was that there weren't so many trout escapees into the carrier this year. Perhaps there wasn't as I 'only' had 3 of around 3lbs each, but a 2lb 7 chub squeezed in which more or less saved the day.
  14. River Kennet - Brimpton 1700 - 2030 Warm and sunny. AT 24ºC. River quite full for high summer - great to see so much water in it! 6 Chub: (in order of capture) 2X ¾-1lbers, 2lb 5oz, 3lb 13oz, 4lb 3oz, 5lb 4oz (they got bigger as the shadows lengthened!). 4 Brownies, a 'pounder' and 3 in the 6-8oz class. Super evening's sport - though, as per usual, had to rely on the 'rest and return' policy after 2 splashy trout in the first 5 mins from my banker swim. Fished 5 swims in total but only had fish from 2 of them...
  15. River Kennet - Widmead (Bulls Lock) 1200 - 1430 Warm and mainly sunny. AT 23ºC. River good depth and flow. 1 Chub - small. 1 Grayling 1lb 3oz, 9 dace all small save for one that needed the net. Quick lunchtime session in a swim that always flatters to deceive. Grayling was a nice bonus though.
  16. River Kennet - Hambridge 0430 - 0800 Warm, muggy and overcast with a welcome heavy shower just after I packed up. AT 17ºC (but felt a lot warmer!). River quite full - especially for June! 6 Chub; 3lb 3oz, 2lb 10oz and 4 between ¾-1½lb. 21 Dace - nothing especially noteworthy - though they weren't tiddlers either. 2 Roach (same!) and 2 Brownies c½lb. A morning's trotting and home for breakfast - gotta love June! And I really should follow my own advice - I recently re-worked this old article for AN for my club's quarterly newsletter - though gearing it more to summer chubbing. I was making the point that in June chub can be found in surprisingly fast water - and that was certainly true this morning. I'd blanked in my usual chub hot-spots and switched to a fast glide in search of some feisty dace - and whilst it was nearly fish a chuck - there was also a shoal of chub in residence at the tail of the swim where it shallowed up. The result - a great morning's sport!
  17. River Kennet - Speen Moors 1230 - 1430 Bright and sunny - though quite cool in a northerly breeze. AT 6ºC. River at normal winter levels. 2 Chub: 2lb 1oz & 1lb 6oz. 2 Dace & 2 Roach - all fairly small. Killed a couple of hours in the weirpool - prior to a dusk perching session on the canal - bit too bright for good sport - so pleased to see anything in my landing net!
  18. With the river close season rapidly approaching, I managed three sessions at the syndicate. Tuesday evening - Took the cheesepaste to a number of swims. Caught a 1lb 12 chub early on followed by two angry brownies in the 2lb bracket. As it darkened the temperature dropped faster than a 4-oz Arsley bomb as a kingfisher flew low and fast past my rod tip, a barn owl landed in the trees opposite and an orangey full moon rose behind me. It was all breathtaking, but I only managed one more brownie before the cold had me headed back to the car at 7. Friday day - The two inches of snow that fell overnight on Tuesday night and hung around for a day may have gone, but there was still a freezing north breeze. It was gloves on, so I started on the leger again and soon had a 2lb 14 chub. Local fishing legend CP turned up and had a fab day - see his blog entry here: 10 March - Chris Plumb's Blog - Fishing Forums from Anglers' Net (anglersnet.co.uk) - I had a day more in keeping with my lesser ability, but was pretty pleased with another 2 chub (3lb and 1lb 2) a couple more brownies, a 3lb 2 rainbow, and from a stint of trotting when it warmed up a little, around 20 roach to 8oz before a pike moved in and I felt it not fair to continue fishing for them. Saturday morning - A bonus session. A frosty start and 9 brownies between 3 and 4lbs. Strange - you never see any trout smaller than this here - did they just have a bumper year? A go at trotting brought another 20 or so roach, a couple of perch and a clonking dace, but retackling having lost a float in a tree when it recoiled from a snag, I somehow managed to over tension my rod and snap the last 2 feet off it. So had to spend the last couple of hours back on the leger, with limited ability to cast or detect bites. Frustrating, but when the last fish went airborne and I presumed it was another bloomin' brownie, the fish gods smiled nodded and in came a 2lb 5 chub. Slightly below par, but with over 30lbs of fish in a cold session, I can't be too disappointed.
  19. River Kennet - Brimpton 1330 - 1545 Cool & cloudy. AT 6ºC. River at normal winter levels - still quite pacey on this stretch and clear. 1 Chub: 2lb 3oz. 1 Brownie - 1¾lb. A couple of hours failing to find one of the 5lb chub I had from this stretch back in the summer - would love to see either in my net again at their winter weight! Gave ½hr to each of my 4 most 'reliable' swims and had just 3 bites all afternoon losing an acrobatic trout and converting the other two.
  20. River Kennet - Hambridge 0900 - 1230 Cool & cloudy. AT 3º -> 6ºC. River at normal winter levels and quite clear. 5 Chub: best two 3lb 8oz & 3lb 3oz - all the others between 1½-2½lb. 1 Perch: 1lb 9oz. 1 Brownie c½lb. With 10 days to go until the end of the season - and a cold snap forecast - I might be looking at a tough few trips to round off my angling year. Bites today were at a premium - until I then had 3 chub in 3 casts after switching swims. My usual 'banker' swim only producing the perch and one of the smaller chub.
  21. Life is getting in the way of fishing at the moment. Don't get me wrong, it's all good stuff, but it's leaving me just a short ate afternoon/early evening session on Tuesdays at the mo. Last week, given a spell of warmer weather, I risked Willows, checking to see if the shallow water had warmed to bring the carp out. Not really. It was a fun evening, I really enjoyed stargazing at Orion, but with carp of 4lb 3 and 6lb 12 plus a beaten-up bream of 3lb 2 it wasn't a huge success. This evening, with the river season closing in I plumped for the syndicate water in Marsh Benham. No rain in weeks has brought the levels back low, and though I was after chub, in 45 minutes I'd banked 5 Brownies around the 3 - 3.5lb mark, lost a few more and even I was getting bored of them. Went to the end of the stretch to find the water flowing off the weir was running to hard for my heaviest lead to cope with, so returned to the carrier to fish swims i'd not tried before in the hope that the trout hadn't found them either. Do you know what - they hadn't! Had two stonking chub of 4lb and 3lb 12 from exactly the same spot. The last hour in darkness brought no more fish, but constant jingly knocks making me think the crays might have woken up.
  22. River Kennet - Hambridge 1245 - 1515 Mild, overcast and breezy. AT 11ºC. River still very full - clear and in great nick. Would have thought it would have dropped more after only 0.6mm of rain locally since 16 Jan. 2 Perch; 2lb 11oz & 2lb 4oz. 1 Chub; 2lb 8oz. 1 Bream 1lb 10oz. After fishing down the length of the Lambourn it was time for a quick lunch and a pop round the corner for a couple of hours on the Kennet. Usual bait and wait tactics met with a rare failure - was nearly half an hour before my first bite (the bigger perch). I then rested the spot for 15mins before recasting and had the bream immediately - repeat tactics resulted in the 2nd perch and the chub.
  23. River Kennet - Speen Moors 1200 - 1515 Mild and overcast. 8ºC. River full and clear. 3 Chub: 3lb 11oz, 2lb 14oz, 1¼lb. 1 Dace; small, 3 Gudgeon. After getting trouted out on my syndicate stretch in the morning it was nice to run a float through a couple of swims without the expectation that every bite would be from something with an adipose fin. Had planned to explore a bit but ended up just fishing the weirpools.
  24. Wednesday - The first non-frosty day for a couple of weeks, but with the ground bone hard, I was postponed from my gardening work. 1.5 hours lure fishing on the Kennet at Widmead. Looked lovely, at one point I did see the long body of a pike swim away from me near the bank, but despite swapping lures, speeds and swims, not a single knock. I could have moved on to the constant water temps of the Lambourn , but me being me I plumped for the canal at Hambridge where last year I found the roach holed up. This year, the water level is above the water spill, so the water was moving reasonably quickly and I managed no bites at all in 2 hours. Tuesday - My usual 3pm work finish, so off to the syndicate with a ball of cheesepaste and roving tackle. Legered for a couple of hours into dark for brownies of 2lb 12, 2lb 14, 3lb 2, 4lb 8, 2lb 2, 1lb 15 and 2lb 4, along with a beautiful chub of 4lb 1. Having blanked last Wednesday, I had the first trout within a minute of casting out. Venue choice is everything especially in winter. if only I'd listen to my own advice more. One sad note: the rubber duck which has been lodged in the tree branches in my favorite swim for some months has gone. I'll miss you, ducky.
  25. River Kennet - Hambridge 0900 - 1300 Cool & cloudy. AT 2º-5ºC. River still very high and clear - down a couple of inches on last weekend but not dropped as much as I'd expected after a dry week. 1 Chub; 3lb 7oz, 1 Bream; 2lb 3oz. 2 Grayling. Scratchy morning in my favourite flood swim with bites at a premium. Bream and grayling in the first ¾hr. Chub first cast after resting the swim for nearly an hour, while I had a leisurely lunch on the bank. Had planned to venture over to Speen this morning but didn't fancy battling with the chaos that is Newbury traffic at the moment - one of the main E-W routes is closed because of a gas leak!
