  1. Middle Kennet (& Carrier) - Marsh Benham 0830 - 1400 Mild with sunny spells - topped and tailed with rain. AT 10º-16ºC. River very high and clear. 2 Chub; 5lb 2oz & 3lb 3oz. 3 Roach - all small. 2 Brownies - both 3lb+. Both chub from my south bank slack on the main river. Rested it after catching the 5lber and caught the smaller one when I returned ¾hr later. Best chub from my syndicate stretch this season - a nice way to end the campaign... A Fat Five
  2. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0915 - 1300 Bright and breezy with a raw Easterly. AT 5º-9º but felt a lot chillier in the wind! River in full flood, in the fields and over the footpaths - but very clear. 5 Chub: 3lb 4oz, 2lb 14oz, 2lb 9oz*, 2lb 4oz* and a chublet of around 8-10oz. 1 Brownie c 2½lb. Surprisingly productive morning given the sub-optimal conditions - all fish on trotted maggot from the one swim which I rested for over an hour and caught 2 more chub* when I returned to it.
  3. Middle Kennet (& Carrier) - Marsh Benham 0900 - 1300 Wind and rain to start followed by a couple of hours of sunshine - though I then packed up in a very heavy shower of sleet and hail - 4 seasons in a morning! AT 4º-7ºC. River VERY high (of course) and with a tinge of colour. 3 Chub: 4lb 6oz, 3lb 7oz, 2lb 11oz. 2 Roach - handsized. 4 Brownies - all around 3½lb+ I was meant to be fishing the Itchen yesterday but it was called off due to a flooded river. However I'd prepped some red sweetcorn for the day so thought I'd use it on the Kennet chub rather than the Itchen's grayling! And first cast produced a fish - the 3lb chub from a slack on the main river and as usual it was my only bite from the swim - but more than adequate compensation for the long walk. All the other fish came from the carrier - and, alas, brownies love corn as much as chub so I ended up switching back to maggot - this produced the biggest chub of the morning - which had been attacked by something (see below), and the 2 roach.
  4. Middle Kennet (& carrier) - Marsh Benham 0930 - 1430 Mild, mainly cloudy with sunny spells. AT 12ºC. River very pacey with a tinge of colour. 2 Chub: 3lb 6oz, 2lb 3oz. 16 Roach - all quite small. 1 Dace (ditto). 4 Bleak. Nice to see some silvers showing again! Usually when the Kennet is in flood this carrier is a mecca for silver fish and one of this season's mysteries was where had they got too - all syndicate members had struggled to find them. Nothing of any size alas - but there was an added bonus of no trout showing up! Made the long walk to fish my south bank slack - and was rewarded with the bigger chub (the smaller one had come from the carrier...)
  5. River Kennet - Newbury (Whitehouse stretch) 0900 - 1100 Mild, breezy and drizzly. AT 11ºC. River very pacey and very coloured up (again!) - after 42mm of rain in the past 48hrs. 1 Chub: 6lb 2oz - SB. 1 Roach - hand-sized. En route to the Lambourn I thought I'd drop in on my 5lber slack for an hour (herein after called my 6lber slack!) With the Kennet the colour of builder's tea I really wasn't at all hopeful but the roach first cast gave me a glimmer of confidence - rewarded by the big chub 20 mins later. They would be my only 2 bites but after such a fantastic fish 1 hour became 2 before I lost my hook on what I think was a shopping trolley - signalling time to go. I had the usual audience when I landed the chub - one of who asked if it was a pike! (makes a change from asking if it's a carp I s'pose!) Season's Best Chub
  6. Middle Kennet (& Carrier) - Marsh Benham 0900 - 1500 Mild, overcast and quite breezy. AT 11ºC. River continues to fall - now at normal winter levels - clear and pacey and still breaching the banks in places - but passable with wellies. 5 Chub: 4lb 12oz, 3lb 14oz, 3lb 11oz, 3lb 9oz, 3lb 3oz. 2 Roach - small. 5 Brownies 1½-2½lb. 1 Sea Trout (!) c 2½lb. A full day on my syndicate stretch - a morning on the main river - pleased that I can at last get access to some of the main swims now that levels have dropped. The afternoon was spent on the carrier. 2 chub from the main river - including the biggest of the day and 3 chub from the aptly named 'chub corner' on the carrier. Sea trout was a bit of a surprise has come a long way from the sea - though they've also been turning up in the Thames locally as well!
  7. River Kennet - Hambridge 1300 - 1400 Mild and overcast. AT 7ºC River very high and clear, but down a few inches on last week. 1 Chub 3lb 10oz. Bit of a recce to see if I could actually access the river. Pleased to say I could (just), so it would have been churlish not to have a few minutes with my grayling gear. One bite, one fish - normal service is resumed!!
  8. Middle Kennet - Marsh Benham 1000 - 1400 Mild with milky sunshine and very windy (remnants of Storm Jocelyn). AT 9-12ºC. River very high with a hint of colour after recent rains. 3 Chub: 2lb 11oz, 3lb 10oz, 4lb 5oz. 1 Roach - c6-8oz. Long walk to fish the south bank of the main river of my syndicate stretch paid off with 3 nice chub. Started with the roach with the 4lber next cast. Resting and returning resulted in winkling out another two - with the added bonus of no trout showing up!
  9. River Kennet - Newbury (Whitehouse stretch) 0900 - 1200 Cold, calm & cloudy. AT -2º - +1ºC. River very pacey and crystal clear. 2 chub: 4lb 1oz & 3lb 7oz. 1 Brownie: 2lb+. This is rapidly becoming my new favourite winter venue! Started in my '5lber swim' but couldn't get a bite which was repeated in my next 2 swims which produced the silvers on previous trips. So more in hope than expectation I went exploring further swims. The river is fairly featureless so I was looking for nice 'glassy' glides. I hit the jackpot with the very next swim I dropped into - hooking a brace of chub at the very end of a long trot. Unfortunately my next fish had an adipose fin and went airborne a couple of times and whilst I fished a couple more promising looking runs I got no further bites. This was to be part one of a double header - with a trip to Hambridge planned after lunch. Alas the river downstream is still way to high - I couldn't even get to my favourite swim at Hambridge safely!
  10. Middle Kennet (& carrier) - Marsh Benham. 0930 - 1430 Cold, cloudy to start clearing to bright winter sunshine. AT 1º-3ºC but feeling MUCH colder in a biting North-Easterly wind. River VERY high - clearly down a few inches on the last couple of days based on all the debris on the bank but still higher by far on my last trip here - gin clear however. 2 Chub: 3lb 2oz, 2lb 13oz. 7 Brownies 2-3½lb. Started on the south bank of the main river with trotted red corn - which met with instant success - a chub first cast. Alas, second cast was a brownie that thrashed the swim to a foam putting paid to anymore bites! The carrier was the usual game of trying, and generally failing, to avoid the trout so thankful for at least one more fish without an adipose!
  11. River Kennet - Newbury (Whitehouse) 1330 - 1430 Started raining the second I cast out and got progressively heavier - blowing in my face so becoming deeply unpleasant!! AT 5ºC. River bank high, really pushing through and very coloured up. 1 Chub 5lb 10oz (!) Well, as I was parked around the corner for my Lambourn jaunt I thought I'd at least have a look at the slack that produced my SB chub last week. With more water and a LOT more colour it didn't look at all promising - but that didn't stop me running a float through it! So more than a little surprised to get a bite - and even more so to get another fine chub from here. It would be my only take and with the rain lashing down (as if we need any more!!) I beat a hasty retreat.... First chub of 2024.
  12. River Kennet - Newbury (Whitehouse) 0900 - 1300 Bright and breezy with heavy showers. AT 8ºC. River very pacey with a tinge of colour. 1 Chub: 5lb 14oz. 9 Roach - all a 'nice' size - the one I deemed worthy of the scales went 14oz - with all the others around half that! 2 Dace - small. A quick return to my pre-Christmas venue. When I walked back to my car last week I spied a slack which simply screamed 'here be chub' and I wasn't wrong! First trot through the float buried at the end of the run and I was into a very stubborn battle. A lumbering fight more befitting of a big bream - but very pleased with a season's best chub. Couldn't winkle out another so went exploring and had decent-ish roach from the two other swims I dropped into.... Nearly a 6.
  13. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0845 - 1400 Mild and overcast - quite breezy. AT 10º-12ºC. River VERY high, up another 3 or 4 inches on last month and with a hint of colour. 4 Chub: 2lb 14oz, 2lb 10oz, 2lb 3oz, 1lb 10oz. 4 Roach, 3 Dace, 1 Perch (all small). 1 Brownie 4½lb Morning got off to a cracking start with all four chub caught in the first ½hour - then switched to a slack on the weir-pool that has been throwing up nice perch all autumn - but they weren't in residence - though their prey was! Another move to a rarely fished swim produced the big brownie....
  14. Middle Kennet (& Carrier), Marsh Benham 0900 - 1315 Cool, calm and cloudy - a lovely benign winter's day. AT 5º-7ºC. River very full and clear - though down a couple of inches on 10 days ago. 2 Chub: 3lb 5oz & 2lb 7oz. 3 Brownies; 2½-3½lb. I had a cunning plan for today - return to the south bank flood slack I found last week - pre-bait with copious amounts of red sweetcorn and empty the swim of big winter chub - or at least that was how it played out in my imagination! The reality was somewhat different. I usually have great faith in red corn as a winter chub bait - but after a bite-less hour I switched to maggot and had a 3lb chub immediately - ho hum. It would prove to be my only bite from the main river - so it was a long walk back to fish the top of the carrier - for the inevitable 'trout-fest' (I lost as many as I landed!) before eventually catching a more modest chevin!
  15. River Kennet - Hambridge 1230 - 1430 Mainly overcast, quite breezy with a couple of lumpy showers. AT 13ºC. River up over a foot on my last visit and the colour of 'builder's tea'! 1 Chub 3lb 5oz. 1 Bream 3lb 2oz. 3 Roach - all small. 1 Gudgeon. Fished my 'banker' flood water swim - but even I was surprised I caught. River was really coloured up after Storm Ciarán had dumped an inch and a half of rain on West Berkshire in the past 24 hours - and didn't look at all promising. However a gudgeon first cast grew some confidence and the chub came along shortly after. Bites were still at a premium though so with no action for nearly an hour after the bream and with darkening skies, I decided to quit while I was ahead!
  16. River Kennet - Hambridge 0945 - 1415 Cool with a bright start - clouding over (thankfully). AT 4º-10ºC. River VERY high - highest I've seen it this winter - yet with surprisingly little colour considering it rained most of yesterday! 2 Chub: 3lb 10oz, 3lb 3oz. 2 Perch: 3lb 0oz , 2lb 7oz. 1 Roach (small), 1 Grayling (ditto). 1 Brownie - c2lb. Started off in my downstream flood swim - as it is more shady and had both chub from it (plus the red-fin, lady and brownie). Moved upstream after lunch as it was clouding over and my first swim had been trashed by the trout. Only 2 bites in the afternoon but they both produced quality stripeys including a second 3lber from this swim this winter. A fat 3lber!
  17. Middle Kennet (& Carrier) - Marsh Benham 0900 - 1400 Cool, overcast with some light drizzle at times. AT 4º-5ºC. River very full with a little colour after yesterday's rain. 4 Chub: 4lb 13oz, 4lb 3oz, 3lb 11oz, 3lb 8oz. 1 Roach - small. 9 Brownies, 8 between 2lb-4½lb and a small-un. Fished the whole length of the carrier in the morning, think I pretty much ran a float through every swim for a solitary roach and the 9 Brownies (groan). Then walked down the canal bank to retrieve a float I'd unwisely cast into the bushes and to have a crack at the South bank of the main river for a change. Thankfully this resulted in finding some decent chub at last and had all 4 in pretty much consecutive casts (though I did rest and feed the swim between each fish). Proceedings were brought to an end by another splashy trout which got off but not before going airborne at just the spot where the chub had been taking my bait - sigh!
  18. River Kennet - Hambridge 1245 - 1500 Overcast and drizzly. AT 9ºC. River VERY high up yet another couple of inches on my last visit (11 days ago) - but with hardly any colour. 2 Chub: 3lb 6oz & 3lb 2oz. 1 Perch: 3lb 1oz (SB), 1 Dace:(small), 1 Grayling;(ditto) Usual 'flood swim' bonanza - 2nd winter in a row I've had a 3lb+ perch from here. Started downstream of my usual swim which produced the 'smaller' chub and the 2 'silvers'.
  19. River Kennet - Hambridge 1230 - 1515 Sunny spells after morning rain. AT 8ºC (felt a lot cooler!). River still very high - if anything up and inch or so on last Friday but with nearly all the colour dropped out and LOTS of leaf litter. 3 Chub: 5lb 1oz and a brace of 2lbers. 1 Perch: 2lb 15oz. 1 Roach - handsized. Favourite flood swim produces the goods yet again! Took it nice and slow resting the swim for at least 10 mins after each fish and keeping the bait trickling in - seemed to do the trick as every fish came from exactly the same spot in the swim. Biggest perch of the season (so far!) and 2nd biggest chub of 23/24...
  20. Kennet Carrier - Marsh Benham 1000 - 1400 Bright and sunny with heavy showers to finish! AT 10ºC - 15ºC. River at normal levels with a hint of colour. 7 Chub: 3lb 3oz, one of 12oz+ and 5 chublets. 1 doz Roach: all small. 4 Dace: one good-un of at least 8oz. 1 Perch - small. 'Popped' into my syndicate stretch on the way home from Avington. And as I had my lobs with me I started out with them to try and snaffle a decent perch from here - though they produced not a single bite. Back to trotted maggot for the usual mixed bag - and not even bothered by brownies...
  21. River Kennet - Speen Moors 1000 - 1400 Bright and sunny (for the most part!), AT 9ºC - 13ºC. River up 3 or 4 inches on my last trip here but with little colour. 7 Chub; 3lb 6oz, 2lb 11oz, 2lb 8oz, a 'pounder' and 3 chublets. 5 Perch: all between ¾-1¼lb. 1 Roach - small, 1 Gudgeon, 1 Brownie; 3lb+. A lively morning - went for a wander initially, though ended up relying on my favourite spot on the weir pool, with all fish of substance coming from it. It's becoming a bit of a banker swim!
  22. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1700 Bright start - clouding over somewhat after lunch - with a brief shower, AT 5º-15ºC. River full - bank high in places - though, thankfully not too much colour. 20 Grayling - very few under 12oz and quite a number around the 1lb mark. The three I weighed went 1lb 10oz, 1lb 15oz & 2lb 6oz. 1 Chub 4lb 10oz. 7 Brownies - 2-3½lb. Super day's sport and thanks to Neal for organising. We had permission to fish the upper beat - alas the river was in the fields and this stretch was all but inaccessible. However the one swim I could get to in wellies produced all the big grayling and the chub. Spent the afternoon working my way down the lower beat - in a case of 'catch a couple and move on'. Everything caught on red corn - I actually ran out of the stuff - I brought 2 pints of maggot and didn't use a single one! Itchen 4lber Trying to photograph grayling is akin to giving a cat a pill!!
  23. Middle Kennet carrier - Marsh Benham 0930 - 1400 Sunny spells after another night of heavy rain. Mild/warm for the time of year. AT 12º-17ºC. River up several inches and carrying quite a bit of colour - which had noticeably dropped out somewhat by the time I packed up. 4 Chub; 4lb 13oz & 3 chublets. 1 Bream: 2lb 11oz. 3 Perch: 1½lb and a couple of tiddlers. 16 Roach - nothing noteworthy. 3 Dace (ditto). 1 Brownie -3lb. Despite spending a lot of time and effort on the main river - nearly all fish from the carrier. Trotted corn was largely ignored and I didn't start to catch until I switched back to maggot - and wandered upstream- abandoning the weirpool, to find some quieter water. Biggest chub of the season(so far!) from here...
  24. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0945 - 1415 Warm, overcast and breezy. AT 16º-18ºC. River down around 6-8 inches on my last trip here 3 weeks ago. 14 Perch: All 12oz or more - best two went 1lb 10oz & 1lb 12oz but all of the others were a few ounces either side of a lb. 6 Chub: 2lb & 1lb 10oz and 4 chublets. 9 Roach - all small apart from one 'netter' of round 10oz. 1 Dace - small. 12 (!) Gudgeon. 2 Brownies - a lump of around 3½lb and a parr. Super morning's sport and I was glad I'd saved some lobs as I started out on worm in a spot where I usually catch perch - but never in such numbers. And it can't be a coincidence that the sudden increase in gudgeon numbers - is linked to the number of perch around. 12 gonks is more than I've caught in an entire season - in some recent years (2021-22 for example when I only caught 11 all season!)
  25. River Kennet - Brimpton 1230 - 1500 Warm and mainly sunny. AT19ºC. River with good flow (for mid autumn) and a tinge of colour. 3 Chub: 3lb 6oz, 2lb 15oz and a 'pounder'. Hooray NO trout! Both my 'banker' chub swims gave up a fish and nothing with an adipose fin - which makes a change - first time this season that I haven't caught a spottie from here - long may it continue!
