  1. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0700 - 0900 Cool and mainly cloudy with a raw easterly wind. AT 3º-5ºC - but felt sub-zero with the wind chill! 1 Pike: c2lb. 4 Perch all small. Not the most ideal of conditions for a dawn perching session and a bite off from a pike first cast didn't help either - nor did the duck gangbang that kept kicking off in my swim, 1 poor female mallard was being molested by 4 males at the same time! Bites at a premium when things did settle down and the only fish to put a bend in the rod was yet another lob munching jack - this time just nicked in the scissors...
  2. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0930 - 1400 Overcast with constant drizzly rain, with the wind picking up considerably for last hour. AT 7º-9ºC. 11 Perch: 5 over a lb - best two 2lb 11oz & 1lb 14oz. Biggest perch first cast! And they seemed to get progressively smaller as the morning wore on! Had intended to stay until dusk but it was becoming rather unpleasant in the wind and with no bites for an hour and with a biggie already under my belt, the "I'll be glad when I've had enough of this" moment kicked in rather sooner! Fat as a football...
  3. Kennet & Avon 'Flowing' canal - Thatcham 1345 - 1545 Bright and breezy. AT 8ºC. River very full with a tinge of colour. 14 Roach. 1 Dace. All small. Another rarely visited swim which can be very hit or miss - usually miss - but which I knew would be a large slack on a flooded river. Lots of silvers in residence but no signs of anything bigger.
  4. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 1400 - 1600 Cool, calm with some milky sunshine. AT 7ºC 10 Perch; most quite small - with one good-un @ 2lb 4oz. 1 Pike c2½lb Successful dusk session after a big stripey, in a canal basin that is something of a winter aquarium - for predators and prey - as evidenced by a couple of the club's seasoned match anglers who were also fishing it when I arrived. They kindly let me drop in above them - and I was quickly having problems with pike - I got bitten off twice in the fist 20 minutes. A series of small perch followed before something that put a decent bend in the rod and that wasn't a pike was brought to the waiting net. A 'scissors hooked' pike soon followed and proceedings were brought to an end with yet another bite off.....
  5. K&A 'flowing' Canal - Thatcham 0900 - 1200 Cool, overcast and drizzly at times. AT 8ºC. River VERY full, flowing quite hard (for a canalised section) but clear. 2 Dace: 1lb 1oz (!!!) & 11oz WOW! I visit here quite infrequently as it isn't a particularly prolific stretch - though it has thrown up some big autumn dace in recent years - and that sort of what I was hoping for - but wasn't expecting anything quite so jaw dropping. I'd started on The Arrowhead - for old times sake - (I haven't caught a decent fish from it in a decade) and after a bite-less hour dropped down onto the canal proper. 'Smaller' dace was first cast followed almost immediately by the pounder which I assumed was a small chub until I got it to the surface. My biggest dace for 20 years.
  6. Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1430 - 1615 Cool and overcast. AT 9ºC 5 Perch; 3 between ¾-1lb+ and 2 tiddlers. All fish 10 mins either side of 1600 - not a bite before then!
  7. Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 0715 - 1045 Bright, crisp morning, though the breeze picked up a lot and was clouding over when I packed up. AT 2º - 8ºC 1 Pike: small (very - see pic below!). 1 Perch c6-8oz. 1 Roach - handsized. A cold start with bright sunshine above and grass frost under my feet are not the most ideal conditions for autumn perching! Another exploratory session and I fished 4 swims along the length of the section - but regardless of where I cast, bites were at a premium. Baby Pike
  8. Kennet & Avon Canal - Avington 0630 - 0930 Brightening up after overnight rain. AT 6º - 10ºC. 2 Doz perch. Nothing noteworthy - though they weren't tiddlers - most around 6-8oz with a couple twice that. I had great plans for this week - and they didn't involve prospecting for perch on my club's most westerly venue. The coarse season on the Frome opens tomorrow and I had intended to travel down to Dorset to make the most of the opening day. Alas heavy rain over the past week or so has put the river in the fields and looking at the forecast for the next week it's likely to stay that way for a while. So to a venue I last fished 4 years ago and as ever the quest was to try and find some of the big perch the venue throws up from time to time. Fished 4 swims and had perch from all of them - but nothing to trouble the scales. Increasing light levels brought the signals out in force prompting a pack up before I ran out of lobs!
  9. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0730 - 0930 Continuous rain for the entire 2 hours I was bank-side. Started just as I made my first cast and eased off just as I made my last! AT 9ºC 13 Perch - with the majority a lb or better - the six I weighed went: 2lb 12oz, 2lb 7oz, 2lb 3oz, 2lb 2oz, 1lb 14oz & 1lb 12oz with most of the rest in the 12oz-1lb class. First part of a favourite 'double-header' and a repeat of my trip here at the start of the month - with 3, 2lb perch in my first 3 casts! I had watched a forecast as I had my brekkie an hour earlier and the was no mention of morning rain (just afternoon showers which duly arrived) so was not amused at the drenching. Still the biggest of the morning decided to bite when it was at it's heaviest and my relatively new fishing coat was put to the test! Pike trouble ended proceedings again mirroring my session here 3 weeks ago and with clearing skies I was off to Speen.... 2nd biggest of the season...
  10. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0700 - 0900 Warm, calm and overcast. A lovely, benign autumn morning - perfect perching weather! AT 11º-14ºC 10 Perch: 7 over 1lb (6 over 1½lb). Best 3: 2lb 13oz, 2lb 6oz & 2lb 4oz After Monday's false start (on the Perch front at least) it was a first visit of the season to a more reliable perch venue - though one that didn't produce a 2lber for me last season. That was all put right in the first ½ hour when I had 6 perch from my first 6 casts - including all 3, 2lbers. Bites then suddenly stopped - and it was soon apparent why - Mr Esox - which chased in one of the smaller perch and then bit me off precipitating a, slightly earlier than planned, pack up! Biggest of the morning.
  11. Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1430 - 1730 Mild, cloudy & quite breezy with drizzle at times. AT 10ºC 2 Perch: 1lb 14oz & 1lb 11oz. A much milder day than recently, so decided to try for some stripeys on the canal. Suspect the water temps haven't caught up as bites were few and far between - with both fish in the last 45 mins before I then got bit off by a jack.
  12. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 1500 - 1730 Bright and breezy to start - heavy sleet showers to finish! AT 6ºC 3 Perch - a couple of 'pounders' and a tiddler. Disappointing end to the day (and the season) - I guess the topsy turvey temps over the last week have put the perch off somewhat, Didn't get a bit until nearly 5 o'clock - and then a brief flurry of activity - as the sleet fell - saved a blank!
  13. Kennet & Avon Canal (flowing) - Colthrop 0830 - 1115 Cool and overcast with a stiffish breeze. AT 2-5ºC. River clear and still quite pacey. 2 Roach, 2 Dace; all small. Failed experiment to try and catch a late winter (BIG) dace. They are at their heaviest this time of year so it was off to a venue that has twice thrown up really good dace (see here & here) in recent autumn visits. Fished the length of the stretch with most spots hardly producing a bite - ho hum, at least The Royals gained a welcome 3 points in the afternoon!
  14. Wednesday - The first non-frosty day for a couple of weeks, but with the ground bone hard, I was postponed from my gardening work. 1.5 hours lure fishing on the Kennet at Widmead. Looked lovely, at one point I did see the long body of a pike swim away from me near the bank, but despite swapping lures, speeds and swims, not a single knock. I could have moved on to the constant water temps of the Lambourn , but me being me I plumped for the canal at Hambridge where last year I found the roach holed up. This year, the water level is above the water spill, so the water was moving reasonably quickly and I managed no bites at all in 2 hours. Tuesday - My usual 3pm work finish, so off to the syndicate with a ball of cheesepaste and roving tackle. Legered for a couple of hours into dark for brownies of 2lb 12, 2lb 14, 3lb 2, 4lb 8, 2lb 2, 1lb 15 and 2lb 4, along with a beautiful chub of 4lb 1. Having blanked last Wednesday, I had the first trout within a minute of casting out. Venue choice is everything especially in winter. if only I'd listen to my own advice more. One sad note: the rubber duck which has been lodged in the tree branches in my favorite swim for some months has gone. I'll miss you, ducky.
  15. Last Sunday, after the rain crashing against the bedroom window rudely woke me at 8am, I took my hangover and New Years jadedness to the match on the K&A. Remarkably the rain held off for the rest of the day after yesterdays deluge had left the water the colour and texture of mulligatawny soup. I started on the quivertip but after a biteless first hour, I switched to a 6m pole and fished the middle channel on a light float. I had many bites, missed a lot, bumped many, but landed maybe 20 roach, 15 bleak and a teeny but gorgeous gudgeon. The highlight was a 1lb 4oz perch who tugged the elastic and had my heart a flutter until i landed it. This brought me to a grand total of 3lb 3oz, a small return, but a pleasurable day. Most of the other contestants scored between 5 and 7lbs cementing my understanding that my skills remain below par though hopefully I'm starting to close the gap. Walking the banks of various waters this evening (Wednesday) I was reminded of what wonderful looking waters the NAA has, even under a Mordor sky. Shout out to Barry, who had enjoyed a stonking day when I met him bankside and recognised me as responsible for this blog. Well fished, Barry.
  16. Kennet and Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1330 - 1615 Bright and VERY breezy. AT 11ºC 1 Perch; 1lb 11oz That was a bit below expectations to put it mildly - especially after starting with a semi decent perch in the first 10 mins (and in bright sunshine)- it would prove to be my only bite!!! Wind was a nightmare and way stronger than this morning - made accurate casting and good presentation all but impossible. I fished on hoping that the witching hour would rescue proceedings - but it came and went without incident - alas!
  17. Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1500 - 1645 Bright -though getting damp and dewey as the sun set. 3 Perch - all 6-8oz. Inconspicuous end to the day - turned into something of a recce session as both my first two choices of swim were already occupied by anglers! None of the 4 swims I dropped into merit further investigation though heavy boat traffic (very unusual for November) and very heavy footfall on the towpath from walkers, dogs and cyclists made it a less than enjoyable 90 or so minutes on the bank!
  18. Kennet & Avon Canal (flowing) - Thatcham 1245 - 1500 Mild (15ºC) and overcast, quite breezy. 17 Dace - with around half over ½lb - I weighed two at 11oz & 12oz. 5 Roach - all small. 1 Gudgeon. Unexpectedly had a free afternoon - so thought I'd follow up some recent intelligence of this stretch producing good dace and roach. Information I wasn't entirely surprised by as I had this super dace from here a couple of years ago. Biggest dace first cast started proceedings well and whilst I had quite a few more in need of the net none of the roach that showed were in the same class!
  19. After Tuesday afternoon/evening where the only bite came just before 9pm for a 5lb 4 mirror, I've changed my daytime fishing routine from the lakes to predominantly rivers and canals. My trip to the Marsh Benham syndicate on Friday turned out to be great trotting fun after an annoying morning. Fishing by a weir pool, the first bite came after about an hour, a decent fish which bored upstream as I speculated whether it would be a chub or maybe a perch. Turned out it was a 3lb 5 bream, and so much livelier than its still water compatriots. The next cast brought a silver trophy of a 14-ounce roach. The subsequent four bites all seemed good, if not potentially better fish, but they all dropped off some way into the fight. So, so annoying. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong: I kept a tight line on the centrepin without dragging them in,, so I swapped from microbarbed 16 to a barbed 16, but the bites ceased before I had a chance to test it out. I moved to the furthest 2 pegs that my syndicate compatriots seem to find the most fruitful, but these still contained too much submerged weed to make trotting enjoyable apart from one destructive 3lb 6 brownie, so I made my way back to try the straight narrow feeder swims. I caught fish straight away, and plenty of them, ending up with another 31 roach (between 4 and 12 oz), 6 perch, 16 dace, 4 chublets and 3 bleak. I lost the two decent fish I hooked to snapped 4lb line. Grr. But I couldn't let that spoil a fun session. Inevitably the roachy action aroused the attention of 2 pike attacks, both ending with them letting go after a rod-bending few minutes tug-of-war. I can't wait for my next trip.
  20. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0745 - 0930 Warm (for late October), calm and cloudy with 3 brief showers. AT 13/14ºC. Perfect autumn perching weather - pity no one told the fish! 4 Perch: best 1lb 13oz with another 2 around ¾lb and a tiddler. Surprisingly subdued session - lots of activity on the surface and I concluded the perch were more interested in chasing fry than having my lobs for breakfast. The smallest perch I caught which was not much longer than the lob it took, had a gudgeon's tail sticking out of its mouth and I'm at a loss to fathom how it managed to take a lob with its gullet already crammed full!
  21. Despite pouring Sunday morning rain, 31 turned up for the NAA's annual charity match. That was a good turn out, especially as only 30 bacon rolls had been ordered for the pub meet beforehand, and guess who missed out? What's more, I managed to leave the slice of bread pudding baked and wrapped by the lovely Mrs S at home on the kitchen worktop. No food, unless I fancied worms or casters, at least I'd picked up my bottle of water to enjoy in the rain. I drew one of the new platforms below Guyers Bridge to fish there for the first time. While the rain cleared, the canal water remained thick as a pot of terracotta emulsion. It was a session of infrequent bites for all. The winning weight, at around 8lb less than half that caught by last year's winner, came from two swims down. I ended up with 2lb 8 including a 1lb 10 perch to come just outside the top ten. It was still great fun though, the platform allowing me to fish the pole with no concerns over tripping pedestrians or cyclists behind. I'll definitely fish there again. The bants in the pub after were fun even in the raffle didn't come my way. But more importantly the lasagne, though dry and burned, was food from the gods for a late middle-aged glutton who hadn't eaten for 22 hours.
  22. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0630 - 0815 COLD! and clear. 3ºC when I left - ice on the car and grass frost in patches on the bank! 13 Perch: 5 over 1lb - 4 not by much the other went 1lb 14oz. Brrrrr that was a shock to the system - thermals and fleece making an early appearance for my first 'double header' of the autumn. Pretty much all fish in the first ½ hour - then suffered a bit of pike trouble (got bitten off) and by 0800 the swim was bathed in sunshine and bites had stopped completely - so it was off to Speen for my first trip there this season....
  23. Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 1300 - 1800 Bright and sunny - with broken cloud. AT 12º - 7ºC 15 Perch; 10 over 1lb - most around 1lb 8oz/1lb 12oz. 3 over 2lb though not by much - biggest 2lb 4oz (also had a 1-15). 2 Pike; 2lb 10oz and the other half that! Lively afternoon. I was here really to be ready for when the sun went down - but the action was steady all afternoon - even when the swim was bathed in sunshine. Was very hopeful that the witching hour would produce a real biggy or 2 - but alas the pike turned up - the bigger one bit me off twice before I was third time lucky in landing it (and getting my 2 hooks back!) I slipped it back a LONG way upstream only for next cast to produce a real tiddler of an esox!
  24. Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1415 - 1640 Mild(ish), mainly cloudy. AT 8ºC. 6 Perch: Biggest 1lb 11oz - all the rest ½-1lb. Quick sesh to make the most of the short mild 'snap' though suspect the water temps haven't caught up with the air ones. Only 1 bite before 1615 - then a flurry of activity for 20 mins in the increasing gloom - as per normal!
  25. Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1500 - 1800 Bright and breezy. AT 11ºC - but felt a whole lot cooler on an exposed canal bank! 8 Perch: a solitary 'pounder' - and that not by much - nearly all the others around 8-10oz. Having been well and truely sated on the chub front the aim is now to try and get some decent perch in the last days of the season. This venue has been disappointing this winter - and today was no different! No bites at all until 1715 - then a flurry of activiity - but not from anything of any size, alas.
