  1. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1700 Bright start - clouding over somewhat after lunch - with a brief shower, AT 5º-15ºC. River full - bank high in places - though, thankfully not too much colour. 20 Grayling - very few under 12oz and quite a number around the 1lb mark. The three I weighed went 1lb 10oz, 1lb 15oz & 2lb 6oz. 1 Chub 4lb 10oz. 7 Brownies - 2-3½lb. Super day's sport and thanks to Neal for organising. We had permission to fish the upper beat - alas the river was in the fields and this stretch was all but inaccessible. However the one swim I could get to in wellies produced all the big grayling and the chub. Spent the afternoon working my way down the lower beat - in a case of 'catch a couple and move on'. Everything caught on red corn - I actually ran out of the stuff - I brought 2 pints of maggot and didn't use a single one! Itchen 4lber Trying to photograph grayling is akin to giving a cat a pill!!
  2. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1730 Bright and breezy save for a shower when I arrived and another torrential shower around lunchtime. AT 10º-16ºC. River at normal autumn levels though it coloured up noticeably after the lunchtime downpour. 30 Grayling; Most around 8-10oz. Biggest 'just' 1lb 5oz with another half a dozen or so a couple of ounces, shy of that. 7 Chub: All well over 1lb - best 3: 4lb 8oz, 4lb 5oz & 3lb 10oz. 7 Brownies 1½- 3½lb. 2 Roach - small. 4 Salmon parr and a flounder (least I think that's what it is - see pic below!). Annual autumn start to my grayling fishing - and whilst they were reasonably plentiful - I couldn't find the big ones - I've already caught a bigger one on the Kennet this autumn! Chub were a nice diversion though, I usually reckon on finding a few here but don't remember getting quite this many before - though they kept turning up in some of my favourite hotspots for the ladies. Flounder was a long way from home (the stretch isn't tidal!).
  3. Lower Itchen Fishery 0800 - 1700 Bright, mild and sunny. River low. 45 Grayling - with some 2 dozen over 1lb - most in the 20-24oz range. Biggest 2 went 1lb 11oz &1lb 12oz. A dozen+ brownies to 3½lb. 5 Salmon parr. Lovely day's trotting. Alternated between maggot and red corn all day and caught roughly equal numbers on each bait.
  4. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1830 Warm (still 19ºC when I got home at 2030!), overcast and very windy - rainy for the first hour or so. River very low and weedy with lots of leaf litter and detached weed coming down. 50+ Grayling - nearly every fish in the 12oz-1lb class with a lot just over 1lb too. Nothing substantially bigger - alas - best went 1lb 7oz. 2 Chub; 3lb 5oz & 2lb 14oz. 1 Roach (13oz) & 10 brownies to 2½lb. A very blowy day in Hampshire - upstream wind, so by and large it helped presentation - though on one occasion my 4ssg loafer got blown upstream - impressive considering the speed of the flow here! Nearly lost my hat on more than one occasion too! Rotated between red corn and maggot hoping to find some bigger fish and found the bottom of the fishery (between the M27 and concrete bridge) particularly productive - possibly because it appeared to have had less angling pressure (I didn't see anyone else on that stretch!). Tired limbs and tennis (fishing!) elbow this morning!
  5. Lower Itchen Fishery 0730 - 1800 Cool, calm and cloudy. A lovely benign autumn day. River quite low. 70 Grayling (!): Best 1lb 12oz with nearly half the fish over 1lb - I weighed the first 6 fish I caught (to get my eye in!) and 5 were over a lb (but not by much!) pretty much every fish caught was of a similar stamp. 10 Brownies; 1½ - 2½lb. 1 Chub 2lb 5oz. Cracking days sport - which reached Mr Castwell proportions by the end of the day (yet another 1lb grayling) - tried as I might I couldn't find any really big ladies - the only 2lber turning out to be a chub! Still twas nice to see the river so full of fish. Most fish on trotted red corn (I got through nearly 4 cans of the stuff!).
  6. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1830 Dull and overcast all day temps around 11/12ºC. River low, gin clear & carrying quite a bit of debris - mainly weed with some leaf litter. 44 Grayling: 14 over 1lb - best 3, 2lb 1oz, 2lb 1oz & 1lb 15oz. 3 Chub, 4lb 14oz, 3lb 6oz, 2lb 12oz, 2 Brownies, 4 Salmon Parr, 1 roach & a gudgeon - possibly my 1st ever from LIF - can't ever remember catching one from here before! Very pleasant days angling organised by Paul with Lee, Merv & Dave joining us for some early autumn grayling action. We all caught between 40 - 60 ladies and I think we all caught chub too - Lee and Dave certainly had 4lb+ fish. No other 2lb grayling caught - all my biggest fish (above) along with another grayling of 1¾lb and the 2 smaller chub came from the carrier. My brace of 2lbers...
  7. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1630. Cool and overcast after a soggy start, rain returning just as we packed up, temps didn't get above 4ºC all day. River quite pacey with a slight tinge of colour. 37 Grayling; 14 over 1lb with half of these over 1½lb. Best two; 2lb 5oz & 1lb 13oz. 1 Brownie and 2 Salmon Parr. IAC fish-in in memory of Paul Goulbourn. A poignant day on the Itchen. Paul and I were introduced to this fishery back in the late 90's - via an IAC fish-in and we made a point of fishing it every season since - always scheduling a trip in mid to late Feb - so today was full of recollections of trips past and a fitting venue for some of his old IAC mates to gather in his memory. The talk on the list this week has all been about otters and blow me if the first thing we saw when we arrived at Gaters Mill at first light was an otter. And not just a fleeting glimpse - we watched as it scampered up the bank, crossed over the track and plunge into the river to head upstream under the M27. After this early excitement the first challenge was to get the cars up the track - we'd been warned that it was in a poor state but everyone made it up safely even if a few cars had to be pushed out for the return journey. The angling was everything I'd hoped it would be (save for the lack of chub). The river was quite 'full' but thankfully the lack of rain in the previous days had meant it had had a chance to fine down. The weather was exactly as per forecast - early rain giving way to a dry, cool, overcast day. I started in a spot where I expected there to be chub but the extra water meant that the slack that is usually there - wasn't. However it wasn't long before my trotted corn was snaffled by my first fish of the day a 1lb 9oz grayling - a super start. It quite quickly transpired that the fish appeared to be shoaled up in a few specific spots - and I ended up catching all my grayling from just 3 swims - rest and return being my mantra for the day. Sometimes at fish-ins you can go all day without actually meeting up with anyone - especially on a large venue such as LIF. Dave had a arranged for everyone to down rods and meet up for lunch - with the offer of freshly cooked sausages, toasted sandwiches and cupcakes! It made for a nice sociable interlude - even if Ed did miss the photocall in his urgency to return to the river! Thank you's to: - everyone who came especially those that travelled some distance to make it - Dave Smith for organising the day and acting as treasurer -£120 (+ Gift Aid) was raised by the event which will be given to Duchess of Kent Hospice where Paul spent his final days. - Chris (Rusty) for offering to give me a lift and being great company. Some the IAC Reprobates! (That's Brian on his knees - praying for a 2lber?) My biggest of the day.
  8. Lower Itchen Fishery 8am - 5pm. Cold and overcast with light snow flurries in the morning. AT never above 2ºC all day. River on the low side for late winter - with a slight tinge of colour and a surprising amount of weed growth. 22 Grayling; 14 over 1lb, best 4 - 2lb 4oz, 2lb 2oz, 2lb 1oz, 1lb 15oz. 3 Chub - all 3 - 3lb 5oz. 1 Brownie 2½lb. 2nd IAC grayling day in memory of Paul Goulbourn. Organised with great diplomacy by Dave Smith and attended by some 17 anglers - raising around £300 for Sue Ryder. A great day out even if sport was a little on the slow side for some folks (I think I was the only one to find any 2lbers ! ). I switched between trotted maggot and red corn all day - which is reflected by the fact my biggest lady was on corn my 2nd biggest on maggot. Also made the most of the opportunity to fish a few new swims as well. Big thanks to Dave for organising & Rusty for the lift to the venue. My biggest two grayling...
  9. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1600. Drizzle all day becoming quite breezy! AT around 8/9ºC after a frosty start. River quite 'full' with a little colour. 18 Grayling - with a dozen or so 1lb or better! Best 4 went 2lb 10oz, 1lb 13oz, 1lb 12oz X2. 3 Chub 4lb 7oz, 3lb 11oz, 3lb 6oz. 2 Brownies;3lb+ & 2lb +. A soggy day on the Itchen with the IAC. 20 of us getting together for the 3rd Paul Goulbourn grayling day. Raising money for Sue Ryder in the process. Despite the conditions I think everyone caught - I had a real purple patch after lunch when I had 9 ladies over a pound including all my biggest fish of the day (with the added advantage of the wind and rain being at my back!!) Fished mainly with corn in the morning - which accounted for all the chub but switched to maggot on a smaller hook for the afternoon - which seemed to do the trick!!!! My biggest grayling from here since Feb 2009.
  10. Lower Itchen Fishery 0800 - 1800 Rain, rain and more rain - yes pretty much non-stop all day - though thankfully not particularly heavy apart from a few brief 'pulses'! River carrying a tinge of colour but otherwise looked in fine fettle! 3 Doz Grayling with half of these 1lb+. Best, 1lb 15oz with another half dozen in the 1lb10oz - 1lb12oz class. 3 Chub; 3lb 11oz and a brace of 2lbers. 9 Brownies - all between 2½-3½lb. 3 Salmon; 2 parr and a grilse of 5lb - on trotted corn! A soggy day in Hampshire though thankfully there was little wind and regular trips to the hut meant there were opportunities to dry out (a bit!). Nice average size of grayling - the trout though got to be a bit of a pain and meant I stopped using red corn - my usual first choice bait here for the ladies - but the trout were shooting to the surface and snaffling the stuff whenever I threw in free offerings it was if it were trout pellets in a stew pond and to get a salmon on the stuff is - well!!!!!
  11. Lower Itchen Fishery 0830 - 1700 Bright and breezy (very at times), River well up and coloured from yesterday's heavy rain - though conditions gradually improved throughout the day. 9 Grayling; best 1lb 8oz. 2 Brownies - 2½lber and a parr. 4th IAC Paul Goulbourn memorial grayling day - so it was nice to catch up with some old friends. Fishing was a challenge for all though as the river fined down I think most caught a few. Gary, who I fished with all day, was the star of the show with 5 ladies over 1lb - and the 2 best fish of the day at 1-10 & 1-15. He also managed to embed a size 14 deep into his finger and had to drop into minor injuries unit on the way home to have it extracted!
