Croatia - Tuna - anything else?

Recommended Posts

We are off for a family holiday to an island in Croatia, about 3 hours from Dubrovnic in mid August. A quick web search found that this is Blufin season - has anyone fished there and can share experiences? Also, any info on inshore sea fishing possibilities? Any tips much appreciated.

Thanks

I’ve fished there at a place called Klec near the Peljesac peninsular in between Dubrovnik and Split; I presume you are going to Korcula?

It was much earlier in the year May June and we caught Comber and huge Weavers in shore on basically stepped up coarse gear, there were plenty fishing tackle shops around but bait was scarce, we used Squid and Sardine from the Hotel.

The biggest Comber went a couple of pounds and were worth fishing for.

My mate Clive caught a weaver of nearly a pound and these were not worth fishing for.

We're going to Mjlet, an island North of Dubrovnic. Thanks for the reply, I'll try and avoid giant weevers... I assume they are the same stinging fish as UK ones

Grandmothers and eggs probably, Salar, but take a BIG & THICK cloth when dealing with weevers and various other prickly fish - a lot of them have spines with various degrees of poison attached.

Take care, have fun

Looking at my reference books after posting this the fish was probably a Greater Weever Trachinus draco, which are found in the Med not the Lesser weaver which is more common on our shores
