No probs mate, I should have thought of it myself. We tend not to do it if we can help it on commercial premises, it tends to generate to many help desk calls because some dip-stick has forgotten that he needs to turn his mates PC on to print, but has only powered up the printer.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Your network properties need to look like this

props.jpg

You need the driver for the networked printer installed on both machines. this means that you MIGHT have to temporarily connect the printer to the other pc just to get the driver on. You should not need to. XPs built in print server should install it over the LAN. Make sure you install the latest and greatest driver for your printer before commencing with anything else.

Hmmmm....something isn't working.

Too much to do today, so will mark it down as one to Google next week.

Give us a shout if you have problems, this should just work. Are you running any personal firewalls?

It isn't that easy will all printers. Before I bought a Print Server I use to share a printer, XP didn't have the drivers, and the printer package software pack install didn't do it either. What was needed was to extract JUST the printer driver from the package and intstall it. I don't remember how I arrived at that and how I found the driver file, sorry.

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

I had problems when I did it because I have XP on the laptop and Vista on the desktop.

I got there in the end. It's been a while so I've kind of forgotten what the problem was. I think the browse for network printers function didn't find the printer and I had to enter its name manually or something like that. That means your desktop has to have a simple enough name to remember!

The name has a format like

\\ColinDesktop\HP4100

The Vista end of the setup was easy enough.
