Well I've caught gudgeon sized barbel and they DEFINITELY fought harder than gudgeon sized gudgeon!! :D

But I'd have to go for grayling too - a 2lb lady twisting and turning in a fast current they fisght like fury - no wonder they often have to be helped to recover....

A fairly small barbel seems to pack a punch far in excess of its size, but they don't really seem to go anywhere. Even a double figure barbel will not usually go all that far, although it is difficult to raise one off the bottom. River carp though, go absolutely mental and will power off downstream like a train. It's definitely river carp for me, with mid-doubles seeming to scrap the hardest.

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

Barbel are cracking fighters no doubt about that, but Cats are a stronger if more dour opponent.

However, a long, lean mean double figure Common (in particular a Ghostie) can be practically uncontrollable. I agree with Peter Sharpe, mentally they're unhinged.
