France Fined Over Fishing

this is the first time though that a country has been fined 'lump sum' - and the fine goes up EU 58 million every 6 months if not paid. As France are skint, best for them to pay up now. :P

One benefit of the wider EU is that the French and Germans can no longer dominate so easily. Bearing in mind they are both financially stuffed at the moment, the UK is in a very strong position to renegotiate both the CFP and CAP.

The French & Germans can no longer afford their contributions due to the deep recessions both countries are in, and want to reduce other members (like the UK) rebates so the cost is less to them . Unfortunately for them, the UK rebate is pretty much set in stone as it requires both the UK's consent and a majority vote by the EU, most of whom are not bothered about either France or Germany's financial problems.

And the UK will only renegotiate it on their own terms ie reducing our contribution to CAP and changing the format of the CFP in return for a cut in the rebate. This of course cuts the subsidies to France and Germany, which they oppose.

Basically France & Germany want to pay less and receive the same but the UK is having none of it.

Fairplay to president Blair for not giving an inch. :D

demon Yep, one of the few things Blair has got right rently. I like french cars, well Citron Picasso 'D's' anyway. I have one, done 140,000m, no complaints, and their cheap, you get a lot of car for the money. Not so impressed by French wine, their larger aint bad 'hic!'. France attitudes are going back to the days of Degaule. Its about time we give em' anuv'er frashing, keep em' in place? All a personal opinion of course.

CJS2 :D

Knock the French all you like (like you need my permission).

But how can you not like French wine? Have you ever tried any of their good quality wine?

And I don't mean stuff that cost's £3.99 from your local Lidl's. :)

Ian FG, that's the trouble, people drink the crap that they sell at the supermarchet. If you travel in France, you will find superb wines, undoubtedly some of the best in the world.

Still don't like the French though.
