Peter - how do you count soft plastics since they come in a package but not rigged? Would a package of 25 count as 25 lures? If so, you will be roughly 137 years of age before you get down to where you need to buy more I'm afraid. :D

last post was in 2004 tamisone. if you have a good read through from the start you will will find there is no best pike bait. The general feel of it is each bait has its own merits in certain circumstances.

got to say i enjoyed reading this old thread though. makes me want to go get some more shads to add to the collection :)

What is your best pike dead bait?

Mackerel & Roach are my main baits, easy to get hold of and catch fish.

On some waters I have found Smelt and Lamprey to outfish them but Mack and Roach would be my first go to dead baits.

Mackerel also has the big advantage that you can pick some up doing your main shop in the super market.

Very informative thread to read this, even if it is a bit dated. Especially useful as i'm new to the piking 'scene'.

This is my second season, and have had no pike this year but had two last year on mackerel deadbaits. Lures have produced nothing which is dissapointing. I have seen people catch well on freshwater live and deads but my only catches have been on mackerel.

I found this interesting: "Pike is a very risky buisness all round but with a small bait such as a sprat can be very dangerous indeed. Some times a Pike will pick up a bait and swallow it on the spot with the resulting consequences. Like deep hooking !!

Please used bigger bait like sardine, mackerel and so on."

- I didn't think about this, I saw some sprats in tescos the other week reduced to 40p or something stupid so tried them last time I went out, had nothing on them but I won't buy any more.

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

My personnel opinion is that the dangers often claimed about using small baits is over blown by many predator anglers. I use baits from a whole large Mackerel down to just a 1" chunk of fish. For me its not the size of the bait but the way it is fished and the quality of your bite indication that is important.

I fish small baits on single hook hair rigs and have never had a deep hooked fish on them. However I have with a single hook direct in a small bait and so am not to keen on that method. I still prefer a pair of standard treble hook for big baits with the lower treble in the tail and the top one half way along the bait.

Dave,

dont give up on sprats or small baits, indication is important as always. i fish a lot with small rudd and roach the size of sprats and small lamprey sections. imo Andrew over egged the dangers a little and your a pretty clued up angler.

have you read any of the articles on pacgb regarding deep hooked pike. its not as scary as it seems.
