I use frozen pilchards (sardines) ,the crayfish love them and will hardly touch native fish and surprisingly they avoid mackeral so i presume thepilchard smell goes further ,ifthecrays like them pike will and most certainly do

When I pike fished in Scotland my favourite bait was sardine.

If I Pike fished here it still would be.

Sardine for me overall. Trout were always pretty reliable on gravel pits for some reason. Eels were absolutely fantastic on some waters and next to useless on others. It's been a while since I've done much deadbaiting though!

I had intended to buy a bulk order and target a bit of the Thames that has a history of big fish but little attention and i had in mind to try lamprey/blueys/smelt as a change to my normal sardine attack, with the state of the river lately glad i held off .

Last couple of winters Pike have not figured on my radar as much as they used to but realy want a big girl from the river this winter so i am going to throw a sleeper rod out whilst Chubbing/Roach hunting if the poxy river ever settles down Steve.

On recent seasons' experience I would say lamprey outfishes everything; mackerel good, herring less so. Grayling is outstanding- used to use it years ago to great effect(on a bit of river which was paved with them by the way ). Also like smelt- but have never found sprats to be much good at all . The one problem with lamprey is that bloody chub love them too - even good size whole ones.

Funny how many folk say sardine. I've hardly ever had a sniff on the blinkin' things but then again, maybe my expectations are higher...I don't know.

In no particular order it has to be...

Small Brownies (4-6") laced with Kalium Aniseed oil.

Half lamprey section (preferably the head but the difference is neglible really)

5-6" Smelt laced with Smelt oil.

I lied....that's exactly the order. Try anything less at your peril.
