Where do I start?

Haven't a Clue

Recommended Posts

I'm a complete newbie to fishing. As my username suggests, I haven't really got a clue where to start.

Yes i've read the angling mags, watched a few dvd's and read a few books (but most of it is way above my head), so theory wise I should know what i'm doing. However, in my past experiences in life, the theory part is always so much easier than the practical.

I want to start off really simple, probably sometime time next year, but don't want to look a complete fool when on the bank.

Basically, i'm after any hints or tips that will allow me to eventually become an half decent angler, although I realise that will only happen the more I get out there. I've considered having coaching, but at present, the cost is too expensive.

I don't really know what else to say for now, so any advice would be most welcome.

I started off pole fishing a maggot on the Thames or in a pond or lake, catching roach before learning the big stuff,

I'm on the Lincs/Notts border. So there's rivers, canals, lakes to go at. I did think about joining one of the Angling Associations, but i'm not sure whether the cost would benefit me, or if i'd be better off trying the free places to start with, or even just paying for a day ticket to one of the commercials. Which do you think would be of the most benefit to me?

Penton Hook.

Penton Hook.

...and you've progressed to two rods already :)

Seriously, for Haven'taclue... Best advice I can give is join a local club preferably one with both pond and river waters. Start in the pond with a whip and light tackle fished under the rod tip.

As Alan said, a day with someone who knows (basically!) what they're doing is the best thing to get you started. It needn't be a qualified coach. If you're anywhere near Oxford you're welcome to spend a day with me if you like.
