Minnow (3"), taken in 1963 on single maggot from the River Wey at Guildford. Tackle consisted of a 5' solid glass rod with a red plastic handle, a "centre pin" reel costing half-a-crown and a porcupine quill float.

And I can still see that float tip going under for the first time...

my first fish on rod and line was a pouting off the pier in Dover and on the same trip caught a pollock it was 1968 and i was nine. my first coarse fish came a year later and was a perch from lake meadows in Billericay Essex.

From my teens to my late 30's i stopped fishing. my first carp was caught when i was 37 my first pike when i was 41 and my first barbel when i was 44. That gap from fishing is why i am still a relative newcomer in my middle age.

Mine was a daddy ruffe on the Seven, I caught about 12 fish just under a mooring platform and though it was easy, it took me about 2 more years to catch a fish again.

A small obliging perch from the ‘No Fishing’ moorings just upstream of Hampton Court bridge fell to red maggots from my 1/3 pint aluminium bait box at the age of 9. Myself and best friend used to regularly catch the train from Raynes Park, and being avid train spotters often got a lift in the cab (once even in the diesel loco of a freight train, but only to the next stop). Of course, those were the days when adults were more often than not out and about instead of being glued to the telly, and adults who took and interest in children were called kind and not pedophiles (sic).

First game fish a fly/nymph (I forget) caught rainbow from a fish farm up near Kielder (if my memory serves me well), where fishing was free, but whatever was caught was kept and weighed, and then charged per lb. Lovely clear stillwater, amazing to watch the fish following the fly, and we ate very well that night. I’d have to look up my holiday snaps to get the age right, which I can’t do as I’m away from home at the moment, but around 20 I think.

Mine was a Poddler from the Fish Quay North Shields which is not on the list, my first freshwater fish was a small perch on a redworm from the Big Lake at Killingworth near Newcastle and my first Gamefish was a Brown Trout on worm from the Tyne.

After a certain age, if you don't wake up aching in every joint, you are probably dead.

I had to answer exotic but it wasn't. Sunfish such as bluegills, pumpkinseed, and the rest of that prolific family (called bream) are the most commonly caught fish over here and are classed as game fish since our classification rules are very different than yours. I imagine most young anglers in the US South (and possibly elsewhere) caught a bream as their first hook & line fish.

Yup, bluegill here. Way up Nawth.
