RAW and sorting computer

Recommended Posts

OK Newt, I can be a bit thick it would appear, but you may have seen in previous post, I am dyslexic, you have seen my spelling :P So, it can take me a bit of time to get things the way I need, to understand whats being asked of me, sorry about that.

However I think I'v got two out of three, thats not bad for me!

Simple one first, Windows opening pictures or not in the case of RAW. Its 'Windows Explorer' I use to to open the SD card from the card reader, and then I transfer them on block (the ones I want to keep) to a folder on my desk top simplistic filing system, then extract the pics as I need then from the files into Elements, then back again after I have finished with them. Hope that makes sence.

Now onto the Computer crashing, I would love to keep what I have got, because of my dyslexia, change for me is a 'nightmare', plus the financial cost, not good at the moment, for anyone? and my update from 512mg to 2Gb of RAM has put enough zip in my computer to satify me . . . when its not crashing, plus the new ex HD more than enough storage.

Well Newt, I dont think I am doing this right but this is what I have so far, I have saved the events you have asked for but have no idea how to get to the 'clip board' to extract them never use 'clip board' cos I dont know how, I said I get blocks some times? Perhaps you see a picture building, I'm pushing myself all the time, cos I dont understan in a normal way, so its often a sideways go, and they dont always work out.

I have copied what I saved into a 'folder' of the Belanc report but, it looks short on detail to me?

Where do we go from here?

I look foward to your answer, which I canot deal with now untill Sunday. Its 12.11 Saturday morning, I need my bed and I'm out early all day tomorrow. See what I'm like when I come in at about 5pm, but I suspect I will be bushed!

Again, thanks for your help mate, reagards Cliff

Newt In adition to the above. You asked for the problem desription???? whew

I have one her in front of me that I printed out:

Problem caused by USB driver

Received message, because the USB driver has caused a 'Blue Screen' error. Error caused computer to shut down abruptly to protect itself from loss or corruption.

1 Adjust computer power settings

2 Checkfor a system BIOS update for your computer

3 Download and install latest updates and drivers for computer

4 Try removing newly added USB devices

5 Do not disconect USB devises while computer isshutting down or going to sleep

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has a similar warning with to the above with referance to RAW, but I did not print out and If my life depended on it, my memory affected by dyslexia will not recall what it said. All I can say it was in a similar vein?

Sorry its a bit vauge

The other one I get is:

'the computer has encounterd a problem and will shut down in 30 seconds'

Sorry for the disjointed nature of the infomation Newt.

Not a problem SW.

I'm headed home from work now so won't get back to this for a few hours. I was on my way out and only just stopped in to see if you had posted but haven't taken time to read it.

I'm very familiar with dyslexia and comfortable working with folk who are affected. We'll take it in managable chunks.

Copied from the Photo forum; 'Pension the Old Girl off . . . ' as I think it is relevent to the above;

:wallbash::wallbash: Frusrtation . . . . Steves sugestion of the Explorer RAW/JPEG reader works with my D80, sorted I thought . . . not on your life, tried a new ScanDisk Extreme III 4Gb HC SD card, the camera can cope, but the computer simply crashed 'big time', went into check 'C' drive mode! I think I'v lost setting. Even tried a new reader that came with the card.

Its time . . . . Pention the old girl off, she is tryig but in truth, going round in circles, cure one problem, on a knifedge . . . bang!

I'm also looking at what Steve said re Vista, its picture viewer opens RAW/JPG on modern cameras? With the idea I might upgrade the camera at some time, have a hankering for the D90, essentialy a D300 with a plastic body, thats a Nikon plastic body of course! Or I can stay with XP on the new 'pooter' and down load Steves 'RAW/JPG reader for XP', after all the money I might have spent on a D90 is going to have to go on the new computer

Anyone got a view on XP v Vista, they say Vista has many of its problems sorted, but thats not the same as 'all of its problems'? . . . Even heard the other day, MS will dump Vista and are looking at a new operating system for 2010/11 ???

I was just now able to get to this topic. Here goes.

"Clipboard" - you do use it regularly but never notice. Any time you do a copy & paste or cut & paste, the clipboard is the place your data is stored when you copy or cut. When you paste, the info is pulled from there and put where you want it.

For those events, click that icon below the up down arrows and you are all ready to paste the info.

*************************************

The easy solution will certainly be to retire your present system and replace it with newer hardware. XP remains a great operating system and should be very stable on new hardware. Vista has been great for me but I bought it installed so all the proper software pieces to make the hardware work were already in place.

I would not recommend buying a system and then upgrading it to Vista. It certainly could work but would need some tweaking.

*******************************

Re: your current system and the crashes - I imagine you need some updated device drivers (little programs that tell the hardware how to operate) and probably some firmware updates (firmware being hardware controller bits that can be updated).

The various upgrades & security patches needed to keep your system operating safely will sometime make changes that older device drivers or device firmware can't handle without also being updated.

I suggest you find a good PC shop and let them do the updates for you. It will cost a little money but will be much less frustrating for you.

These problems will likely just get worse as you install more security patches and such with more frequent crashes. I notice from the Belarc report that you are in need of several critical patches and some other important ones.

**********************************

Spending money - except on fishing tackle - is usually not fun but in this case I suggest it may be worth doing for you.

Thanks for that analysis Newt, I can, after all the consideration see the most practical answer is a new broom! I will have a word with my very helpfull computer shop in the week, but I see a big hole opening down which I am going to pour some of the money that will help to finance a new, up to date machine, with no garentees when the pouring will stop. Even then I suspect we are only talking short term, months, perhaps 12? befor we are back to square one.

XP v Vista, I'm stick in the mud enough to want to stay with XP, some of the programs I have wont run on Vista. I see no need to exacipate the financial drain as Im happy with the way this side of my computer operates and I understand it, accept the 'clipboard' function, or is that 'copy/past' <_<

The Christmas Holiday has been an interesting few days, I feel I have learned a lot, thank you all for your help and patience.

Regards, SW (Cliff)

Copied from the Photo forum; 'Pension the Old Girl off . . . ' as I think it is relevent to the above;

Newt will disagree with mew on this but my personal opinion is that Vista is not but a bowl of dog's vomit. Mr Ballmer of Microsoft would agree but not in public. There is a reason that Microsoft has extended support for XP until Windows 7 ships, the reason is that Vista is a bowl of crud, big corporates don't like it and are refusing to roll it out. All our kit comes with Vista pre-installed and the first thing we do is put an XP image on them. My new a year ago tToshiba lappy came with Vista and after struggling for 6 months I decided to downgrade to XP and I haven't looked back. You should be able to get all the XP drivers you need for even a brand new machine. Just make sure that you download the XP driver for your PCs network card BEFORE you start.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Cory - I suspect the situation is similar to WinME. Some folks who bought a PC with it installed had perfectly fine results but upgrages were a horror and quite a few new machines with it installed were as well.

I avoided that whole issue since I ran NT4 which was rock solid and only knew about ME issues because I was helping mod a windows help forum and tried to work with users to turn that pile of garbage into an OS on problem machines. It sometimes worked to some extent.

When we bought new laptops (as part of getting ready to move into the 5th wheel where space is is short supply and we wanted small /w built in wireless), I stood ready to do a clean install of XP-pro at the first sign of problems.

So far its been rock solid and does have some features that suit me better than the way XP handles the same jobs.

As far as apps, I'll give one example. Running CCleaner on my XP machine needs about 45-60 seconds to do a full run and delete trash. Vista takes about 8-10 seconds. Open office apps are also faster although not like CCleaner. The other apps I routinely use are not much different from one OS to the other but they all work fine. The email version is way better than Outlook Express ever was and good enough that I haven't bothered with Outlook although I do have a licensed copy at home and I do use it at work.

For a newish person, the ease of setting up things like networking (wired & wireless) compared to doing it on XP is significant.

It maybe tries a little hard to protect the user from himself but since all the restricted apps offer a 'run as administrator' option when you right click, that hasn't been a problem. My regular account is an admin account but not with full admin rights like it would be on XP which would limit the damage a rogue bit of malware could do.

With Vista and Windows OneCare Live (M$ got that one right) I've had to spend basically zero time under the hood doing maintenance chores. The machine remains virus free, spyware free, crash free, and running at a decent speed.

I use XP-pro at work and Jan has the Vista laptop + her XP-pro desktop and moves from one to the other pretty easily.

I don't doubt the people who say they used it and had issues. All I do say is that for me personally, it had been a good upgrade.

I also think for non-tech folks, a good Vista install is probably better as long as all their hardware and software works normally. Otherwise (no drivers, software incompatible, etc.) it is absolutely not worth doing.

Vista came pre-installed on my new laptop. I liked it at first, but I use Adobe Premier a lot and even with the maximum of two GB RAM it struggles on Vista. I have a freind who got a new Dell just before Dell started shipping Vista and I upgraded him to Vista. He has almost the same CPU as me but with 4GB ram and a chunky SATA HDD and he loves it. I must admit it does go like a train. I'm hoping to be one of the lucky 2.5Million to grab the public beta of Windows 7 tomorrow. There are 3 things in XP that I miss. Media Centre is the best software for my USB 2.0 DTV-B stick bar none, the search is much better than that silly dog thing in XP and I like the way you can type the first few characters of a program or file into the start menu and vista will find it. Lets hope that Windows 7 is all that it is promised to be.
