been fishing on the thames near reading been getting some strange bites caught 1 chub the other day then had bites from some big fish bites they were not strike able bites it was like they had been hammed but i know it might have been the frist time they had seen a maggot for a long time i wonder if i should have use a big bit of meat or cheese

What do you mean by strange bites Barney? In my short and recent Chub experience trotting a float results in pretty definite takes whereas ledgering baits results in a few fast taps with maybe a bigger one to strike at if you're lucky. I don't think Chub are rod benders like Barbel but others with more experience will be along shortly to help out.
