Angling and FMD

National Angling Alliance Seeks Further Information

The National Angling Alliance (NAA), the umbrella body for angling, has been in close consultation with its membership over the impacts of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) on angling and angling-related business. This information has enabled the NAA to make vigorous representations to the Government’s Rural Task Force to ensure that the sport receives the same consideration for financial relief as other countryside businesses.

A set of snapshot figures – provided to the Task Force this week – reveals the severity of the FMD situation. The outbreak has had a huge geographical impact on angling-related business, from town centre tackle shops to isolated fishing hotels, often hundreds of miles from the nearest outbreak. Commercial coarse and game fisheries estimate that they are currently losing £4m per week; income to the retail tackle trade was down by 38% in March; and the total losses to the trade alone could reach £180m by the year end.

To provide a fuller picture, the NAA has designed a special questionnaire (in line with the format suggested by the DETR) to collate month-by-month information on losses to the tackle trade, commercial fisheries, fishing hotels, clubs and associations, and any others suffering financial damage because of the crisis.

The SIF undertake to maintain the strictest confidentiality on the individual information supplied.

These data are vital to underpin the NAA’s case to Government for a complete package of remedial measures, including: business rate relief; deferred Income Tax, NIC and PAYE payments; and interest-free loans to help reduce the impacts of FMD on angling and the businesses it supports.
