having spoken via email to alan roe, the lady has allowed me £70 to buy a rod, real, line combination.

Any suggestions (2nd hand or new) bearing in mind i'm useless at casting 910 yards snaking all the way is my usual, 30 yds is a dream), and will be fishing lakes and rivers but only want one rod and real (will happily carry a few different lines dependent on no of spools the real has)

(Alan i posted this here as I thought others could benefit who may be at the same stages as i am having seen the success of Marzi's thread, your further input, and clarification bearing in mind the budget would be appreciated)

PS just received my free fly from sid knight Posted Image

To save others the problem of repeating that which may have already have been said on the issue This is the advice that has been offered thus far..

Dear Phil

The standard recieved wisdom on this issue is that it is generally

preferably to use a longer rod on a still water combined with line weights

in the order of #7or#8 the usual length of rod being around the 9'-9'6"

mark.

The reason given for this is the usual necessity to make long powerful casts

to reach the fish in the frequently prevailing semi hurricane conditions

often found on larger stillwaters, this sort of gear is handier if you are

intending hurling lures the size and colouration of commisionaires

epaulettes around!

On rivers the general wisdom is that short rods casting light lines with

accuracy is the order of the day . Thus river rods tend to be in the order

of 8'-8'6" and often shorter usually casting a line of #4 or #5 weight.

That having been said I have it at the back of my mind that somewhere in my

over large collection I have a Normark Blue Fox 8' long which laughingly has

a nominal 4-5 rating but if memory serves operates at its best with a wf6

line and again if memory serves I can put a fly into the next county with

such a line, so for most river work and modest size still waters it would

serve your purposes. Reels you can pick up very cheaply as to all intents

and purposes the tend to serve mainly as line stores despite what the comics

are currently preaching...They have to look after their advertisers! The rod

should you want it you can have for £20 and you should be able to find an

adequate enough reel with spare spool for about the same. My only caveate

would be for you to buy the best floating line you can afford .....That is

the one item you dont want to skimp on.

Regards

Alan

Hi Phil

I have a reel you can have for free. Let me know if you want it. It's a rim fly or similar, suitable for a 6/7 weight line.

In terms of fly line I would say your best bet is a mill end line from Mullarkeys (mail order) I can dig out their details if you want. Top quality (and expensive) fly lines are great if budget is no object, but a top quality line is in the order of £30 to £40. A mill end line is about £4. It won't stop you catching fish.

Alternatively take a look at http://www.johnnorris.co.uk

They have the following outfit on offer at £69.95

ROD - Zenith Fly 1640/285 9ft 6in Line 6-7 £ 32.99

REEL - Graphite 2755 3 ½ in wide + 2 spools £ 19.99

LINE - 2 x John Norris Deluxe Hypergrade floating/sinking £ 31.90

15090 Net £ 8.99

9218 Flymaster Bag £ 19.99

5 Leaders £ 4.75

Fly Box plus 30 Flies £ 15.99

MRP £ 134.60

SPECIAL OUTFIT PRICE £ 69.95

If I can help in any way let me know, I'm only a few miles from you.
