How difficult is it to tie/make up you'r own flies? Any special things you need?

I wouldn't mind having a go if it's not too difficult. Posted Image

Hi Hoppy,

The short answer is no, it's not difficult to tie your own flies - you can pick up the basics very quickly and then it's just a matter of practice.

You will need some specialist pieces of kit:

a vice, bobbin holder, maybe a whip-finish tool. If you have a fine pair of scissors they will do, and you can make a dubbing needle with a sewing needle and a bottle cork!

Personally I would avoid bying a fly tying kit as they often contain materials that you never seem to use - To start with just get the things you need to make a couple of simple patterns.

I would also suggest you find out if there is a branch of the Fly-Dressers Guild near you as they will be happy to help you learn.

Hope this helps,

R

Fly dressing is easy and if there is anybody in the north west who wants to learn e-mail me and I will show you how.

Cheers

Hi Hoppy

I agree with previous posters - its easy. There are plenty of books on the subject, some better than others. I recommend you buy, beg borrow or steal a copy of "**** Walker's Trout Fishing" and look at page 77, which will get you started by explaining very clearly how to tie SIMPLE flies which will actually CATCH FISH. There is plenty more wisdom in the rest of the book about how to use the flies once tied.

I've seen a chap tie fies to match the conditions and hatch whilst on the bank, what vices are used for this.

A pair of artery forceps makes a good vice substitute on the bank. Then all you need is some thread, a piece of rabbit, preferably an outside portion, and maybe a feather or two. Dub a spiky body of rabbit fur, add a hackled feather and/or wings and away you go . . .
