Apologies

Gentlemen, and of course ladies, (should we be fortunate enough to have more than the one nice lady who mailed me), please accept my apologies, I tend to get rather too excited about some things, and react too precipitately. Advancing age has made me no wiser, just more crotchetty.

Thank you all for the mails. With hindsight, the incident was as much my fault as anybody else´s I fear. I should have seen it coming, and simply avoided it. Sometimes this is easier said than done.

I would be most appreciative if we could consider it closed. I have always felt welcome on Angler´s Net, and over time, have received lots of e-mail from people who rarely if ever post here, but they obviously read the forum, and have a regular look at the site.

Elton has always been very friendly, and we have been colleagues for quite a while now, it would be a shame to throw that away, and would achieve nothing.

Also, I am at once gratified and humbled by the numbers of people who e-mailed me with their thoughts, and encouragement.

I will restrict my posting to the fly-fishing forum, and adhere as closely as possible to pure fishing topics in future.

By way of atonement for my own silliness, and if it pleases you;

A man went forth to spread the word, about his new found ethic,

and was upset when he was told, that most thought it pathetic,

undaunted though, he persevered, and though the way was fraught,

with dangers, insults, ridicule, he changed the way some thought.

Whatever you may think of this, or how you judge the man,

you owe respect, for what he does, and for his noble plan,

his ability to spell a word, or for perfect declinations,

should not be used to denigrate, his thoughts or intimations.

In a perfect world, where all was well, and each man truly free,

ethics then would have no meaning to the likes of you and me.

Perfection then would govern all, right from the very start,

and no ethics would be needed, for the perfect pure of heart.

The world is far from perfect though, as most of us well know,

and ethics are the only things which help us all to grow,

to more than petty squabbling things, fighting for existence,

and for this we have these men to thank, their patience and persistence.

An insult, like an arrow from a bow, once loosed may not be halted,

and is hardly in the cosmic scheme of things, an act to be exalted,

far better then to hold the bow or better yet ones tongue,

some songs are better after all, when they are left unsung.

Ethics are not hard and fast, and hard to grasp and justify

and there is no standard punishment, when your creed you then defy,

they are a part of every moral man, and almost as diverse

imagine there were none at all, would this not be far worse ?

To argue then the rights and wrongs of ethics is but a useless scheme,

defining them, or straining for their rigid application, just a hopeless dream.

Remember though, this does not mean, that you should cease to fight,

for things you know in your own heart, are good and pure and right.

The final test of what you do, in life, or on the stream or river,

is not measured by the sum of arrows loosed from some moral quiver,

the final test my friends lies within your soul and heart,

do what you feel is right, no matter how you otherwise take part.

Rest assured, I will try to take it to heart.

Tight lines !

Firstly, let me say I am very glad you are staying here. Secondly, I am not sure any appologies are needed. I read the thread in question, and decided not to post because I can assure you my response would have gotten me into the same boat as you. I do believe the fact that fish often follow me home and end up in the pot might well have rubbed a few folks there wrong.

Mike, I am so glad you decided to stay. I for one shall be looking forward to future posts from you. I shall try to think of a few questions for you to answer, this should not be to hard for me as a total newbie to the world of fly fishing.

All the best

Dave

Glad you are staying Mike - I can only echo Nightwing's thoughts - having fished in many countries I'm very much in favour of "when in Rome..etc" However, if anyone does break a law for what seems to them good reason - then they should take the consequences without whingeing.

I feel partly responsible for the avalanche, as I asked about German fishing law on your winter grayling thread - for information rather than trying to stir things - sorry it subsequently got out of hand.

Anyway, hopefully several people have learnt to express themselves more tactfully from these exchanges.

Welcome back. We need your input.

Not your fault at all. Best just to forget the whole thing.

It is really good to see you posting here. Whatever others may feel I thought your explanation of the situation in Germany clear and concise.

Too many have commented, in the past, from a position fo little knowledge, and we all learnt something useful.

BTW, is that your poem or did you know it from elsewhere? It pulled a string in my heart.
