Hand or reel?

I'm not a fly fisherman so this might sound stuoid but here goes...   :rolleyes:  

 

I see all these fly fishing shows on tv and sometimes the angler rreels the fish in, and sometimes he pulls the line in by hand ( both when playing a fish).

 

Can anyone help me out here?

It is best to play a fish by hand unless all the slack line is taken out. If all the slack line is out the reel can be used as this keeps the line from under your feet. If the fish runs towards you faster than you can reel in go back to hand lining to ensure you dont give the fish slack line, otherwise the fish will come off
