A Timely Flood!

Just got this in from the Blackwater Lodge.

The run of fish so far this season had been disappointing. The situation

seems to be the same throughout Ireland, and seems to have been much the

same in the UK.

There is a counter on the first weir on the river (situated above the Lodge

Beat No. 8). Whilst it only counts a very small proportion of the actual

fish running, it nevertheless gives an indication of the run of fish. For

much of the spring, it has only been recording 10-20 fish per week.

Last week, with a reasonable flood on the river, the count was 49. Last

Tuesday (May 20) - 92 fish were counted in the one day, so the run of fish

was building up. They were also reported to be mainly good fish in the

10-15 lb. class.

Following very heavy rain, the river rose to 2.24m on the gauge at Ballyduff

Bridge today (May 22).

By evening, it was beginning to subside & had dropped by 0.5m on the upper

beats by evening.

Even in this very high water, fish were seen head & tailing as they were

running through on the flood at Ballyduff Bridge this evening.

It looks as if this flood will finally bring in a good head of fish. Even

before the flood, plenty of fish were being seen on the uper beats, but were

not taking well as the river was unsettled and so were the fish. A number

of fish were lost last weekend, including two very large ones hooked on fly.

Last Friday the best of the season was taken, and on Sunday a lovely fresh

little grilse of 2.7 lb. was taken by Glenda Powell on Beat 12. As she

played the fish, three other good fish were disturbed & rose in the same

pool, showing that the head of fish in the upper beats is obviously much

better that we had thought.

What is required now is a few dry days to drop and clear the river. It

looks from the weather forecast as if this may be the case. If so the

fishing could be superb by the weekend.
