HI there, my dad really enjoys fly fishing and for Christmas he would really like a pair of waist high waders and a hooded jacket - all in Gore-Tex. The thing is, is that i don't know where to begin looking or what price things are. Can anyone help - it would really cheer him up to get this stuff as you know what Zimbabwe is like and what it is going through.

Horses for courses, neoprene is very hot, so for use in Zimbabwe ? then a Goretex type of breathable wader may be preferable. waders are available with either a sock foot ( wear wading boots over )or an integral wellington boot. The jacket is an easier buy , decide on the length and price. Good advice is available from James at John Norris ,Penrith www.JohnNorris.co.uk

or try http://www.sportfish.co.uk

Couldn't agree more, but how long will they remain waterproof?

A valid point Jim, certainly the cheaper breathables have a poor reputation in that repect. All breathable material will lose its proofing sooner or later , last time i got caught in a cloudburst it went straight through my Simms jacket, I had neglected to reproof it after 4 years of use. Do you think pvc or nylon waders could be the answer for hot climes ? available from

But all the makers of breathables (and especially Gore-Tex) make a solution specifically for re-waterproofing their products. Treat every year or two (depending on use) and they stay good for a lot of years.

Ivor - to get an idea of cost and availability, check http://www.basspro.com and http://www.cabelas.com . Both are US sites so prices are in $$ US rather than ££ but if you figure $1 = £1 after you add in VAT and such, you should get a good idea. And you can mail order from either place.

Gore-tex, according to the chap I met at the game fair in 1985 claiming to be Mr Gore himself, relies on it's action by having millions of holes per square inch that are large enough for vapour to escape but too small for a molecule of water to pass through. If, as is implied, the material is breaking up after a year or so (this was entirely consistant with my findings, having had a Gore-tex jacket) and needs reproofing, then I would rather not spend 2 weeks pay for the experience.

Short-term the material was wonderful, but there are lots of other cheaper products that will last just as long and can also be reproofed.

One thing they warn you about when you go fishing in Zimbabwe, and indeed other African countries, is that wearing camoflage gear is illegal or at least downright dangerous. Too many soldiers & anti-poaching patrols see someone in camoflage, shoot first then ask questions later!
