I wonder how many of these comments are made through ignorance.
Sorry Cranfield, snobbery in trout fishing in Scotland is alive and kicking, some peeps call bait anglers 'Gringos' in my area and the funny thing is , most of them started fishing the worm too..in all walks of angling 'snobbery' is apparent ..the use of the word 'noddy', the big time pikers/carpers who laugh at each other and look down their noses at ordinary joes who dont take it as serious as they do..what really makes me giggle(wrong word?) is the pictures in the Angling Press with the sponsor teeshirt on whilst lovingly gazing at 'Whatsitsname' probably caught for the 20th time this year..do they actually wear the said teeshirt or is it produced whilst the poor fish is sacked or netted in order to get free bait or whatever..anyway rant over..ive moved offtopic..

Cranfield:

I think that comments that suggest, that all fly using trout anglers are snobs, are seriously misguided, to put it politely.

Agreed Cranfield - most of the "snobs" I have come across are not anglers at all, or at best, have tried "flaih fishing" because they think it is the done thing.

One amusing "snob" story concerns a well-known chalk stream, where in the late 50's, I had a yearly permit to fish for salmon and trout in the appropriate seasons.

Went down in March after salmon, and as the water was high, started work with a large devon minnow. After a time I was confronted by an irate individual who told me I had no right to fish there, was fishing out of season, and was breaking syndicate rules by spinning.

Not being very impressed by his attitude, I asked who HE was, and was he a member of the syndicate himself. Yes he was, he said, and demanded to see my permit. So I said, OK, but show me your permit first.

He did not have it, saying he was not fishing that day as it was out of season (as of course it was - for trout). By now I had sussed the unwarranted assumptions he was making, was getting irritated by his hectoring tone, so decided to wind him up a bit.

"So, you claim to be a member but have no permit - how do I know you are not just a self-appointed busybody? " I asked.

Thought he would have apoplexy when I said I saw no grounds to show him my permit, and he stormed off.

Thought no more about it until three hours later when he appeared, breathless (must have run all the way home and back) and waving his permit, demanding to see my permit, and threatening to report me to the committee, ONE OF WHOM HE KNEW PERSONALLY (!!!)

So I said now I knew he had grounds for asking, I was certainly prepared to show him my authority to be there.

Produced my salmon permit - watched his face change whilst he grasped the fact I was salmon fishing, and accepted his grovelling apologies (he called me SIR several times - before that it had been HEY YOU) with as straight a face as I could manage.

The fact that this scruffily dressed vagabond with a rural accent might actually be a salmon fisher had obviously never occured to him.

He actually asked if I was going to complain about his bothering me! No, I said, he was doing what any member should, but a more civil approach in the first place would have resulted in my explaining what I was spinning for and would have saved him a journey.

I think this is a matter of "interpretation".

For "carp anglers to look down on pike anglers" and for some, self styled "specialist" anglers to refer to others, as "noddies", is nothing to do with snobbery, its IGNORANCE.

The words "noddy's and Numbnuts" tells you more about the people who use them, than it does about the people they insult.

Adz:

Hmm... how about carp on the fly not too far from NYoike newt?  Know of any locations?

Sorry Adz. NY is around 1000 miles from me so not a place I go to fish. And right now the only folks I know who do enough fly flinging for carp to have an idea are in Michigan/Wisconsin which is also pretty far from NY.

But there is enough different structure in the Finger Lakes in NY that surely you could locate some suitable flats. I'd just ask around for places that would be nice bonefish territory if the water were salty.

Hi Craig,

The Derwent at Matlock is fishable on a day ticket for trout and grayling although I have not fished it myself but I have watched others from the road bridge many times and it does fish very well.

Another place to try is Barlow lakes 0114 2890543, there are 4 trout lakes which are fly only and 3 course lakes with the larger lake being stocked with trout as well as coarse species to improve the fishing in winter.

Also there is a reservoir just outside Tintwistle on the main road to Sheffield which you will have to find on a map because I can't remember the name! which allows float fishing with bait throgh the winter to clear out the old stock ready for the new season, they used to advertise in Trout Fisherman but I don't know if they still do.

Hope this helps.

Alan.
