Trevor, the tippet is a small length of line that joins the end of the leader. Tie your fly to the end of the tippet.

What this does is save you losing a small piece of the leader every time you change flies. When the tippet is to short just tie on a new one.

As already said use a piece of line about 2 to 3 feet in length for the tippet tied with a four turn water knot.

Best of luck in your new adventure.

Dave

Yup, the point fly is on the end.(actually that will be the end of the "tippet" not the leader) The term is used when the angler is fishing a team of several flies. The other flies are known as droppers, with the top dropper (ie the one nearest the angler) sometimes called the bob - especially if it is fished in the surface.

BTW Beginners are strongly advised to master casting with ONE fly before trying to cast a team, or else some nightmare tangles will develop.

I started with 3. using 6 is not unheard of where I learned to fish. (Loch Katrine)

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

That makes sense on a large water. I will be doing most of my fishing on a small river. A single fly should do here.
I agree. 'Tis different on big water from a boat or a treeless shoreline.
