Yes - I agree you CAN start with three (or more) flies, but beginners often get wind knots

 

Wind knots = mysterious overhand knots which appear in the leader - mysterious to the beginner until it the reason for them is sussed.

 

Wind knots are a great annoyance with one fly, and a nightmare with three or more. They cannot be ignored, as the knot seriously weakens the leader, so they must either be untangled, or if they have pulled tight, then re-rigging is the only answer.
