New PB Trout!

Apache

Recommended Posts

Well done Apache. It is good to beat your PB, although if you beat it by too big a margin its that much harder to do it again. But a word of warning about addictive fly-fishing.

Catching lots of rainbows will alert you to the problems of Fred West - ie what to do with the bodies.

You can only eat so many. Eventually neighbours, relatives and friends begin to decline your giveaways as well.

We bartered rainbows for freshly shot game birds, for venison, for honey, for home-grown fruit and vegetables, and for wine. We bought a second freezer. We invited more people to dinner - although as they were friends they already had freezers full of rainbows. I looked for catch-and-release options (not all owners will wear it, as they fear that after every trout has been caught three times will become uncatchable) The only option we haven't taken is to open a cats' home.

Despite all this the pile of fish in the freezers grows inexorably - Heeeelp! :D:D

Vagabond, between myself, my cats, my dad, and various canine companions we manage to eat quite a lot of them.

As to bartering for game birds, every so often i do a bit of shooting, so I have enough of them too.

I tend to fillet them and freeze the fillets rather than just gut them, and smoke a few for various people who take then away with them.

Yep, done all that.

Definitely fillet your rainbows before freezing - not only does it save space in the freezer, but fillets defrost more quickly. Defrosting a largish whole fish is a pain - the outside is beginning to go stale before the inside has defrosted.

The only fish you should leave whole is any large ones (ten pound plus) you are sending for cold smoking and slicing. After gutting, cut off the fatty sides of the belly - they are not worth having smoked.

To add to our freezer space problems we brought back 70 lb of Pacific salmon fillets from British Columbia, and our barter partner has just given us 60 lb of venison.

Glad to hear you shoot too (I used to, but now only rarely) There is nothing like catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself, incorporating feathers from a bird you shot yourself.

I went shooting recently for the first time in about 5 months, and I have a feeling it will be a long while beofre I go again.

Two of my freezer drawers are full of trout and trout fillets, ranging from 2lb to 8lb.
