Fly fishing at Drummore

Snatcher

Recommended Posts

Have recently bought a caravan at Drummore,Mull of Galloway,Scotland. Intend to explore the nearby trout, sea trout, salmon fishing so done a bit of surfing. Spoilt for choice as dozens of venues came up. Has anyone out there fished in this area and can recommend any lochs/rivers to fish. I am not a total purist and have been known to upstream worm on occasions! Any help on this quest would be most appreciated.

Tight lines :)

Cheers Colin, I could fancy trying the fly off the shore in Luce Bay. How does Scottish law stand on taking salmon or sea trout on rod and line off the beach,is it still a hanging offence?

Have fished Port Logan and had pollack on lead heads/jelly worms but I could fancy trying for them on fly.

Having a look on the web it says:

"1. If any person without legal right, or without written permission from a person having such right, fishes for or takes salmon in any waters including any part of the sea within one mile of mean low water springs, he shall be guilty of an offence ......"

You can see the Fishing in Scotland Law web page here:

Loads of grey areas I think - who is to say that you are not fishing for Pollack, Mackerel or Coalfish etc within that 1 mile area !!! If a Salmon or Sea Trout jumps on the hook - well :D

Have caught Pollack on fly from shore - throughly recommend it, I suggest using at least 15 lbs braking strain though if fishing over kelp, as once they take and "dive dive dive" they head straight for it, and sometimes have to be bullied out if the get in and about it. If fishing over rocky outcrops etc, I'd go down to 8-10 lbs for the sport :)
